Nem is olyan régen sikerült találkoznom a ciprusi illetőségű banda új korongjával, ami tizenegy vérbő power metal dalt tartalmaz, nem teljesen hétköznapi köntösben, hiszen az old-school témák mellett más stílusjegyek is keverednek a nótákban. Hatéves történetük alatt nem kapkodták el a lemezkiadást, de ez nem nagy baj, hiszen legalább minőséget tettek le az asztalra. Az új lemezzel kapcsolatban tettem fel kérdéseim a zenekarnak.

Összefoglalnátok röviden a zenekar történetét így a legelején? Hiszen vannak, akik még nem ismernek benneteket, nem hallottak rólatok.
Azért csináltunk metál bandát, mert nem volt jobb dolgunk.
Nos, valójában, George (ének) és Stefanos (billentyűs, akinek nem volt jobb dolga, és azóta sincs) alapították a bandát, mert power metalt akartak játszani, és akkoriban, Cipruson, senki sem játszott power metalt (úgy 2004 körül. Hat éve)
Mivel nem lehet bandád csak énekkel és billentyűvel (kivéve, ha nem a Mortiis vagy, aki, teljesen biztosan, egyikünk sem) találtak egy gitárost, Pericles-t, akinek bejött a dolog. Aztán jött a dobos, Andreas, aki szintén azon kevesek közt volt, aki tudott power metalt játszani Cipruson. Aztán találtak egy basszerost és felvettek 4 demo számot, ami, bizarr, de azonnal elkelt. Charis, a régi basszeros kilépett és csatlakozott a hadsereghez, így találtak rám (Miguel) és felvettünk egy teljes demot. A producerünk Liapakis, a Mystic Prophecytől ránktalált az interneten, és tetszett neki, amit hall, így összehozott nekünk egy német utat, hogy felvegyük az első albumot. Pericles-nek is ki kellett lépnie, szintén a sereg miatt, és Harry lépett a helyére. Andreas kilépett az első album után, mert a munkájára akart koncentrálni, és jött Chris, aztán felvettük a második albumot és most itt tartunk.
Honnan ered a banda neve, mit jelent ez nektek?
Igen, sok embert összezavar a név. Itt Cipruson nem nagyon van tél. Úgy értem, rendben, lehűl a levegő és esik, meg ilyenek, de nem fagynak halálra a hajléktalanok az utcán. Mikor utoljára havazott, mindenki azt hitte, itt a világvége. Viszont a télnek van egy különleges sötét hangulata, ami szerintem illik a zenénkhez.
Térjünk rá a „Tales of Tragedy” lemez születésének körülményeire – milyen inspiráló tényezők játszottak szerepet az új anyag dalainak születésekor, ki az, aki a nóták fő gerincét hozza?
Az inspiráció mindenfelől érkezik. A legjobb ebben a felvételben, hogy ízelítőt kaphatsz minden tag zenei hovatartozásáról – Harry (gitár), crunchos dallamos riffek, Chris (dob), klasszikus hard-rock megközelítésű power metal dobolás, Stefano, nagyzenekari hangzások… zeneileg összedolgozunk, mindenki ír számokat és mindenki hoz saját ötleteket. Valaki kitalál valamit, megosztja a többiekkel, akik belerakják a saját dolgaikat és így tovább, míg a végső formátum eléggé eltér az eredeti ötlettől, de így mind hozzáadunk valamit a számokhoz. Ebben az a legjobb, hogy sosem tudod, hogy fog a végén szólni, ami izgalmas dolog. Valamint így sokoldalúbb is lesz a szám, elég kreatívak vagyunk.
Ki írja a szövegeket, honnan merítettétek a témavilágot, mennyire sikerült kifejezőre szerintetek? Nyilván vannak itt is inspiráló töltetek, mik azok?
George írja a dalszöveget, főleg, mert másnak nem igazán van ideje, vagy nem szeretne ezzel foglalkozni, és szeretjük is, amit összehoz. Ezen az albumon az volt a megközelítése, hogy minden számhoz, külön kis sztorikat talált ki, mindegyiknek elég tragikus és, néha, sokkoló vége van. Nagyjából mindig meghal valaki mindegyik számban, de sosincs kimondva, csak utal rá.
Úgyhogy, azt hiszem, a Cannibal Corpse-os George Romero Alfred Hitchcockjai vagyunk… vagy ilyesmi. Nem tudom, talán ez egy hülye analógia, de valami szövevényes és provokáló dolgot akarunk kihozni heves témákból, talán úgy, hogy fantázia ihlette köntöst kapnak. Nem akarunk nagyon elmerülni a képzeletben, inkább a való világgal kapcsolatos köteléket keressük, ami körülöttünk történik. Ilyen megközelítésben pedig, szerintem, nagyon jó munkát végez. Nincs meg az a kifinomultság a dalszövegeket illetően, mint, nem is tudom, Bruce Dickinsonnál, vagy James Hetfieldnél, de nem is kell, mert valami mást akar és szerintem sikerül neki. Annál jobb, mintha felrobbanó hangfalakról írnánk, mikor mi zenélünk.
Érzékenység és dinamika, egyszerre old-school és modern az, ami a számaitok jellemzi ha a témavilágot nézem, no és az összképet tekintve kitűnik a profizmus és az összeszokottság – mondhatjuk egy rugóra jár az agyatok – , honnan ez a sokrétűség?
Mikor olyan producered van mint, RD Liapakis, jobb ha kemény vagy és profi! Ő nagyon érti, amit csinál és ugyanezt elvárja a másik féltől is. Ez megkönnyíti és felgyorsítja a felvétel folyamatát és tisztább, jobb lesz a végeredmény. Zeneileg különböző hátterünk és megközelítésünk van. A közös pont, hogy mind szeretjük a klasszikus hard-rockot és power metalt, de van aki szereti a death vagy black metalt is, más pedig rengeteg klasszikus zenét hallgat, egy tag pedig, aki névtelen marad, kivételesen szereti a ’80-as évek glam és haj metálját. Én játszom még egy elképesztően borzasztó punk rock bandában is, a régi dobosunkkal, Andreas-szal.
Szóval, mindannyian más zenét szeretünk, de van amiben megegyezik az ízlésünk… olyan, mintha 5 ember próbálna egy helyre eljutni, de mind más úton jön és különböző dolgokat szed össze az út során.
Mennyi időt vett igénybe a lemez nótáinak végleges formába öntése? Mennyi idő jutott a közös próbákra? A stúdiómunkálatok után, milyen érzés visszatekinteni az elkészült műre, mennyire vagytok elégedettek, és hogyan viszonyultok a korábbi munkáitokhoz?
Kb. 5 hónapig írtuk az anyagot és felvettünk néhány demot is, az új dalokat pedig 2 hétig gyakoroltuk. Ez jól működött. Visszagondolva, nagyon elégedettek vagyunk azzal, amit elértünk. Úgy értem, biztos van, amit jobban is csinálhattunk volna, vagy változtattunk volna egy-két dolgon, de ez így marad a következő albumoknál is… semmi sem tökéletes. Sokat fejlődtünk, de ez természetes folyamat, nem erőltettünk semmit. Kicsit progresszívebbek és epikusabbak lettünk, és kevésbé koncentrálunk a sebességre. Ez a két dolog inkább abból fakad, hogy Harry és Chris csatlakoztak a bandához, mindkettőjüknek rengeteg ötlete van.
Ki készítette a borítót? Közös ötlet alapján született meg a munka, vagy rábíztátok az alkotóra, hogy mit varázsol elétek?
Egy Meran nevű grafikus tervezte a borítót. Elküldtünk neki néhány dalszöveget és elmondtuk úgy általában, hogy mit szeretnénk, aztán visszaküldött néhány olyan dolgot, amitől teljesen elállt a szavunk. Kiváló borító lett, és szerintem, teljesen elkapta az album hangulatát. Sok embert dícsérte már meg!
Koncertekkel hogy álltok? Mostanában sokfelé mozogtok gondolom, hiszen itt a nyár és a fesztiválok ideje! Mennyit koncerteztek, merre mentek mostanában fellépni? Kikkel játszottatok már és kik azok, akikkel szeretnétek egy színpadon állni?
Nos, a nyárra Cipruson kívül nem terveztünk semmit, aminek sok oka van, de volt egy turnénk a Stratovarius-szal az év elején, ami iszonyatosan jó volt. Egy ciprusi fesztiválon lépünk majd, melyet az ex-Manowar-os srácok, Ross the Boss és Scott Colombus nevei fémjeleznek. Jó móka lesz. A jövőt illetően pedig, próbálunk egy turnét összehozni és néhány külföldi show-t is szeretnénk csinálni, úgyhogy figyeljétek a bandát!
Manapság már a sima CD értékesítése sem könnyű, hiszen az internetes kalózkodás nagyipari szinteken mozog. Mennyire érint benneteket ez, és tudtok e valahogy ez ellen tenni?
Ez elég nagy gond. A lemezcégek még mindig a lemezeladásokból remélik a bevételt, de a cd eladásoknak lassan befellegzik. Kevés pénz folyik be az eladásokból, emiatt pedig kevesebb támogatást nyújtanak a bandáknak, akiket képviselnek. Úgyhogy, persze, minket is érint, az iparág jövője múlik ezen, de a cégek jelenlegi hozzáállását tekintve, nem hiszem, hogy bármi is megváltozik, amíg valami NAGYON rossz nem történik. Úgy értem, az SPV-nek és a Sanctuary-nak már annyi, akik két elég nagy játékosok voltak a metál színtéren, úgyhogy senki sincs biztonságban. Hogy mit tehetünk? Nos, igazából semmit. A svéd legfelsőbb bíróság sem tudott mit tenni a Piratebay bezáratását illetően, úgyhogy nem hinném, hogy bármelyikünknek is tudna… várnunk kell és majd meglátjuk mi lesz.
Civilben ki mivel foglalkozik? A zene a magánéletben mennyire fontos nektek? Kik a kedvenc bandáitok?
A legtöbbünknek, a zene nem teljes idős elfoglaltság. Az egyetlen profi zenész nálunk, Chris, aki nagyon vágyik az élő koncertekre, valamint mindenhol dobol fel stúdió albumokon, sokan ismerik, a szakma megbecsült tagja. Nagy löket volt számunkra, hogy a bandában üdvözölhettük, szerencsése vagyunk. Chris tényleg minden zenét szeret, különösen a ’80-as évek glam metálját.
Georgenak felső osztályú divatszalonja van Nicosiaban és áltlaában power és epic metált hallgat, de szereti a klasszikus rockot is.
Harry és én pedig Londonba járunk egyetemre, ő építőmérnöknek, én pedig jogásznak tanulok. A távolság nem igazán jelent akadályt, az interneten keresztül küldözgetjük egymásnak a felvételeket. Szeretjük a dallamos death-et, egy kis thrasht, old-school metalt, de amit igazán szeretek, az a black metal (a jobbakat persze) és mindig szerettem a brutális death metalt is. Szeretem még a klasszikus zenét is, csellón is játszom.
Stefanos semmit nem csinál. Oké, zenét ír, de ezen kívül, nincs élete.
Számunkra, a tanulás és a munka után, a zene a legnagyobb dolog az életünkben. Lefoglalja a szabad időnk és a tartalékaink nagy részét, de ennek így kell lennie. Áldozat nélkül nem érhetsz el semmit. A szerelem miatt csinálod, nem azért, hogy gazdag és híres legyél.
Készültök e a közeljövőben valami különlegessel, vannak e ötletek erre nézve?
Folytatjuk a tőlünk telhető legjobb zene írását, próbálunk annyi külföldi turnén és bulin fellépni, amennyin csak lehet és igyekszünk igazak maradni ahhoz, amiben hiszünk és teszünk. Nem az a banda vagyunk, akik stílus váltanak, hogy több CD-t adhassanak el. Azt csináljuk, amiről úgy gondoljuk, hogy a legjobb, azt a zenét játszuk, amit szeretünk.
Mit üzennétek a rajongóitoknak?
Nagy köszönet minden embernek, akik eljöttek a bulikra, megvették a CD-ket, pólókat és támogatták a bandát az elmúlt 6 évben. Köszönet azoknak az embereknek, akik hűek maradtak a metalhoz.

Not so long ago I heard the new cd of the band from Cypress, which contains eleven power metal songs in a not so casual dressing, since beyond the old-school themes, other styles can also be found in the songs. In their history of 6 years they were not so hasty with the releasings, which is not tragic, since they put quality down on the table. I asked my questions regarding their new album.

Goodmorning! I am Miguel and I’ll be your host today.
Could you please briefly summarize the history of the band? There can be a few people, who don’t know you, haven’t heard of you.
We started a metal band because we had nothing better to do.
Well, ok, actually, George (vocals) and Stefanos (keyboards, who actually did not have anything better to do and still doesn’t) started up the band because they wanted to play power metal and nobody else in Cyprus played power metal at then (way, way back in the mists of time, like 2004. Six years ago, man…)
Since you can’t have a band with just vocals and keyboards (unless you’re Mortiis, which clearly none of us is) they found a guitar player called Pericles who liked that sort of thing as well. They then also discovered a drummer by the name of Andreas who again was one of the very few people who could play power metal drums in Cyprus. They then eventually found a bassist and recorded a 4 track demo which, bizarrely enough, sold out very quickly. Charis the old bassist left the band to join the army, so they then found me (Miguel) and after that we recorded another demo, this time a full-length. Our producer Liapakis of Mystic Prophecy discovered it on the internet, apparently liked what he heard and arranged for us to go to Germany to record our first release. Pericles had to leave the band for army reasons as well, so we found Harry and he joined the band… the story’s been going since. Andreas left after the first album to focus on his job, and then Chris joined the band, and then we recorded our second album and here I am, writing to you…
How did you find out the band’s name, what does it mean to you?
Yeah, a lot of people are confused by the name. We’re like, from Cyprus, you don’t really get proper winter here. I mean ok it gets a bit chilly and rains and stuff but there aren’t homeless people frozen solid on the streets or anything. Last time it snowed everyone thought it was the apocalypse. That sort of thing. But winter has a special dark moody feel to it and I think it fits the themes of our music pretty well.
Let’s talk about the born of „Tales of Tragedy” – what did inspire you when you were writing the songs? Who is the main song writer?
Inspiration comes from everywhere. The best thing about this record is you can catch onto little hints of every person’s musical identity – Harry’s (guitars) crunchy groovy riffs, Chris’ (drums) classic hard-rock approach to power metal drumming, Stefanos’ orchestrations… music-wise, we all contribute, all write songs and all put ideas in. Someone comes up with an idea, passes it over to someone else, who then adds their stuff and passes it along, with the result that the final product sounds very little like the initial idea, but we all put our stamp on it and the coolest thing is you have no idea how the song is gonna sound when it’s finished, which is sort of exciting in a way. Plus, I think we achieve much more variety like that than one person writing on their own could. We’re all creative.
Who writes the lyrics, where do you draw topics from, how meaningful do you feel them succeed? I’m sure there are things which inspire you regarding lyrics as well, what are those?
George writes all the lyrics, mostly because nobody else can be bothered/is incapable of writing any, and besides we’re pretty happy with the stuff he puts out. His approach on this album was to construct little stories for each song, all of them with quite tragic and at times, shocking endings. Someone dies in pretty much every one of them, but it’s never clearly stated, only implied.
So I guess we’re like the Alfred Hitchcock to Cannibal Corpse’s George Romero… or something. I don’t know, maybe that’s a stupid analogy but what we’re trying to do is be subtle and thought-provoking about some pretty intense themes, maybe by dressing them up in a costume of fantasy. We don’t try to make a total fantasy to immerse oneself in, but write a fantasy that is directly linked to real life and what goes on around us. In that sense, I think he does a pretty good job. He doesn’t have the lyrical sophistication of, oh I don’t know, Bruce Dickinson or James Hetfield and he doesn’t need it because he’s trying to do something different from them and I think he succeeds pretty well. It’s better than writing about speakers exploding when we’re in town, in any case.
When it comes to the theme, sensitivity and dynamics, old-school and modern are the concepts which characterize your songs, by checking the image in whole I see professional solutions and it seems that you’re quite together. We can say every member knows what the other member will do. Where does this diversity come from?
When you have a producer like RD Liapakis on your case, you’d better be tight and professional! He’s very professional about what he does and expects you to be the same. It makes the recording and mixing process easier and the overall sound cleaner and tighter. We have different approaches and backgrounds, musically… we all have common ground in that we like classic hard rock and power metal, but some of us like death and black metal, others listen to loads of classical music, and one member who shall remain nameless has a really big thing for glam and hair metal of the 1980’s. I also sing and play in an absolutely terrible punk rock band with our old drummer Andreas.
So we all have different approaches but we like the same kind of stuff… sort of like 5 people trying to get to one place but all taking different routes and bringing stuff they found on the journey to the eventual destination.
How much time did it take to finalize the album? How much could you rehearse the songs? After studio work, how does it feel to remember back the final album, how satisfied are you with it, and what do you think about your former works in the light of the new album?
We spent about 5 months writing the songs and recording a bunch of different demo versions, and practised the new songs about 2 times a week. That worked out well for us. Thinking back, we’re pretty happy with what we did. I mean, I guess we could’ve done some things better or changed some stuff and of course that will always be the case with every album, nothing is perfect… it’s also a really good development from the previous stuff we’ve put out and it feels like a natural process, not forced. We’re slightly more progressive and epic now, and focused less on speed. Those two things mostly come from Harry and Chris joining the band, they both have loads of ideas.
Who made the cover art? Was it born from a common idea or you told about your ideas to an artist and entrusted him with the work?
A graphic designer called Meran did the cover for us. We sent him some lyrics and told him what we generally wanted, and he sent us back a bunch of things which blew us away. Really excellent cover and I think it caught the mood of the album very well. Lots of people have complimented us on it!
Any news about the concerts? I think you move a lot in the Summer, since it’s festival time! How much do you play on concerts, where will you play recently? Who have you been played with and who are the ones who you wish to play with in the future?
Well this summer we haven’t arranged for any festivals outside Cyprus for a number of reasons, but we did tour with Stratovarius at the start of this year which was pretty awesome. We have arranged to play at one festival in Cyprus, headlined by ex-Manowar guys Ross the Boss and Scott Columbus so that should be pretty good fun. As for the future, we’re trying to sort out another good tour and some good shows abroad, so stay tuned!
It’s quite hard to sell Cds these days, since internet piracy gives it hard times. How much is this concerns you and could you do something against it?
That’s a big problem. Record companies continue to make most of their money from selling CDs, and CD sales are in terminal decline. This means that they are making less money, and therefore are less able to support the bands they represent. So of course it concerns us, the future of the industry is at stake but, with the current approach to business most labels are taking, it doesn’t seem like things will change until they get REALLY bad. I mean, SPV and Sanctuary have already gone. Those were two really big players in the Metal scene, so nobody is safe. What can we do about it? Well, nothing really. The High Court of Sweden couldn’t stop the Pirate Bay from operating, so there’s nothing any one of us can do… we just have to hang on and see where it takes us.
What do the members do in their everyday life? How important is music in your private life? Who are your favorite bands?
For most of us, music isn’t a full-time thing. The only true professional musician in the band is Chris, he’s a very much sought-after live and studio session drummer here and everyone in the music scene here knows and respects him for what he does. It was a real boost getting him into the band, we’re lucky to have him. Chris really likes almost any kind of music, but has a special love for 80’s glam metal.
George runs a high-class fashion boutique in Nicosia, and mostly listens to power and epic metal but also likes classic rock.
Harry and I are both studying at university in London, he’s studying Civil Engineering and I’m doing Law. The distance doesn’t really cause problems, with the internet we can just send recordings back and forth to Cyprus. We both like some melodic death, some thrash, some old-school metal, but I’m really into black metal as well (as long as it’s good) and like brutal death metal every now and then. I also really love classical music and play double bass (contrabasso) as well.
Stefanos doesn’t do anything. Ok, he writes music but other than that he has no life.
For the rest of us, music is basically the biggest thing in our lives outside of our work or studies. It takes up most of our free time and resources, and this is how it has to be. You cannot achieve anything without making sacrifices. You do it because you love it, not because it will make you rich and famous.
Any speciality or plans for the future?
We’re gonna carry on writing the best music we can, playing as many tours and shows abroad as we can, try to make as many new fans as possible and stay true to what we believe and what we do. We’re not a band who will change our style so we can sell more CDs. We’ll do what we think is best and play the music that we love.
Any message to the fans?
We want to say a big thank you to all the people who have come to our shows, bought our CDs and tshirts, and supported the band for the last 6 years. We want to say thanks to the people who have stayed true to metal.
