Dan én már régóta szerelmes vagyok a hangodba és a zenédbe, mindig nagy izgalom tölt el, amikor meghallom, hogy új alkotást készítesz. Valószínű sokan vannak még így ezzel. Szóval amint megkaptam a promot, rögtön lecsaptam rá és felvillanyozódtam tőled, mint mindig:) Hogyan jött az ötlet egy újabb projecthez?

Ragnar barátoddal mennyi idő alatt dobtátok össze a dalokat, és a zenével kapcsolatos imidzset, borítót?
Az első próbánk 2010 májusában volt, a mesterszalagot pedig 2013 áprilisában vittem el a Century Media-nak. Majdnem 3 év.
Ez egy új alkotás, egy új project, de azért sokan fel fogják ismerni az Edge of Sanity durvább és a Nightingale, Moontower progresszívebb dolgait. Azt hiszem, mondhatjuk egy tökéletes keveréknek 2013-as minőséggel. Te hogyan látod, milyen jelzőkkel látnád el a kilenc nagyszerű dalt?
Mindig nyíltan álltam hozzá a dalok írásához, és soha nem zártam ki semmiféle behatást más projektekből, amik esetleg átfednek. Pl az Edge of Sanity „Crimson”-ja a Nightingale „The Breathing Shadow” egy riffjének klónjával kezd (bár ezt senki sem veszi észre), az egyik gitár pedig az egész album alatt ugyan arra van hangolva mint a Nightingale gitárok az első két albumon (DADADE), a Nightingale-ben pedig van néhány Edge of Sanity-s elem, a „Moontower”-nek pedig rengeteg billentyűs hangja megtalálható a Nightingale és Edge of Sanity Crimson II-jében. Természetes, hogy vannak elemek a régi Witherscape anyagaimból, de nem volt semmi, amit ne próbáltam volna fejleszteni vagy elnyomni, ez a természetes hangzásom. Ragnar riffjei és dallamai kicsit különböznek az enyémtől, ami egy egyedi keveréket ad!
Hogyan osztoztatok a dalszerzésben? Ki mit módosított a másik munkájában :)?
Úgy körülbelül 60 nekem 40 neki, mert egyedül írtam meg a „Dead for a Day”-t, viszont az összes többi dalnál osztoztunk a riffek feletti felelősségen. Rengeteget lemészároltam Ragnar ötleteiből, de a sajátoméból is, így mint producer, végeznem kell a drágaságaimmal, de Ragnaréival is. Megtettem azt, amit meg kellett tenni az album egyenletessége érdekében.
Miért volt fontos, hogy tiszta és hörgős ének is vegyesen szerepeljen? Hozzáteszem nagyon jó lett a végeredmény, csak érdekel, hogy mennyire és miért érezted fontosnak a durvább-hörgősebb éneket is?
Egyszerűen imádom az ellentétet közte és a tiszta ének között. Jó lett volna a „Moontower”-en is több tiszta vokált használni, de akkor nem volt meg hozzá a hangulatom. Most találtam egy sokkal „érettebb”, tisztább hangot, és szerintem remek kontrasztot alkot a hörgéssel. Tetszik a hangzása, ahogy váltogatjuk ugyanazon a riffen. Kicsit szokatlan, szerinted nem?
Dan, neked már nagyon sokféle projected volt. A mostani Witherscape további lemezeket is fog megjelentetni? Mennyire szoktál előre tervezni?
Már most tervezem azt az EP-et, amit valamikor jövőre adunk ki. A tervek szerint lesz egy új dal, két feldolgozás és az egyik albumszám akusztikus verziója. Még legalább egy teljes albumot látok a banda jövőjében, de remélem sokkal több lesz. Vannak zenészek akik hetven évesek, de még mindig adnak ki albumokat, én pedig még csak 40 vagyok Ragnar meg 35, így szerintem van még időnk zúzni!!
Gondolom csak akkor szoktál alkotni, amikor összegyűlik benned egy újabb lemezre való ötlet. Viszont lehet hallani, olvasni rólad itt-ott, hogy nagyon elfoglalt vagy, mert rengeteg mindent csinálsz. Mit gondolsz, nagyobb terhelés és folyamatos munka közben termékenyebb lehet az ember? Vagy nem látsz összefüggést?
Igen, eléggé elfoglalt vagyok. A heti 40 órámat a stúdióban kell ledolgoznom, hogy meg tudjak élni. A bandáim a hobbim, és néha időt kell szakítanom rájuk, hogy dolgozhassak rajtuk, de mindig fél évre előre tervezek, az pedig sokat segít.
Amikor van egy jó témád, mi alapján döntöd el, hogy melyik projectedben fogod felhasználni? Volt már olyan, hogy több évig tartogattál egy klassz témát?
Jó elképzelésem van arról, hogy melyik dallam vagy riff hova fog kerülni. Néhány Witherscape-es riff eredetileg Nightingale lenne, de soha nem találtam meg az igazán hozzájuk passzoló dalt, aztán pedig kiderült, hogy a riffek maguk mindvégig egy „még ismeretlen” projekthez illettek, és akkor jött a Witherscape, rengeteg ötletem pedig egyből működőképes volt!!
Eddig melyik projectedet tartod a legsikeresebbnek és melyiket szereted-szeretted a legjobban?
Szerintem az Edge of Sanity és a Bloodbath a legsikeresebb anyagaim eddig. Tetszik a Witherscape album, elégedett vagyok a még ki nem adott „Second Sky” albummal, és a közelgő Nightingale album is fasza lesz!
Elképzelhető hogy élőben is előadjátok a dalokat? Milyen tervek vannak a lemezmegjelenés után?
Élő előadások nincsenek betervezve jelen pillanatban. De ha egy támogató felköhögi a pénzt amire szükségünk van a banda színpadra léptetéséhez, akkor minden bizonnyal megpróbálkozunk vele, ha megtaláljuk a megfelelő tagokat hozzá.
Az EP a következő zenei elfoglaltsága a Witherscape-nek, és biztosra akarunk menni, hogy a jelenlegi kiadványunk is megfelelő mennyiségű reklámot kap.

How long did it take you and your friend, Ragnar, to come up with the songs and the related design and cover?
We had our first rehearsal in May 2010 and delivered the masters to Century Media around the beginning of April 2013. Almost 3 years.
It is a new creation, a new project, but several will recognize Edge of Sanity’s roughness and Nightingale’s and Moontower’s progressive parts. I think we can call it a perfect blend with the quality of 2013.
What is your opinion, how would you describe these nine great songs?
I have always written my songs with an „open heart” and never ruled our any influences from other projects to „overlap” for example, Edge of Sanity „Crimson” starts with a „clone” of a Nightingale riff from „The breathing shadow” (Nobody seems to get it though) and 1 guitar through-out the whole album is tuned the same like the Nightingale guitars on the first 2 albums (DADADE) and Nightingale play some E.O.S. live and there’s a lot of the „Moontower” keyboard-sounds in the Nightingale and E.O.S. Crimson II so of course there’s elements of all my past stuff in Witherscape, but it was nothing I tried to enhance and also not repress, so it’s just my natural sound! Ragnars riffs and melodies are a bit different from mine, which makes an interesting blend!
How do you split the composing process? Who changes what in the others work?
It’s kind of 60 for me 40 for Ragnar cause I wrote „Dead for a Day” alone, but in all other songs we have hared the duty of riffery. I have been „axing” out a lot of Ragnars ideas, but also my own, so as a producer I have to kill my darling and also Ragnars. I did what was needed to make sure the album had a good flow.
Why did you feel it was important to feature both rattling and clean vocals? I would like to add, that the end results are really good, I am just interested in the reason, what is the significance of these rougher, raspier vocals.
I love the make they make a contrast to the clean vocals. I wish I had used more cleans on „Moontower” but I just didn’t feel like it at the time. Now I have found a more „mature” clean voice and I think it works great in contrast from the growls. I like how it sounds when we alternate on the same riff. Kind of unusual don’t u think?
Dan, you have had a variety of projects. Will the current Witherscape release more albums? How far do you plan ahead?
I am already planning the EP we will release some time next year. The plan is to have 1 new song, 2 covers and 1 acoustic version of an album track. I see at least 1 more full length album in this band, but hopefully lots more. Some musicians are like 70 and still release albums, and I am only 40 and Ragnar 35, so I guess there’s plenty of time to rock on!!
I guess you create when you have gathered enough ideas for a new album. But there are rumours here and there, that you are a really busy person and are occupied with several things. Would you say that a bigger strain and continuous work makes a person more productive? Or you see no correlation between these things?
I am quite busy, yes. I have to work my 40 hours a week in the studio to make a living. The bands are my hobby and sometimes I just have to make space in my schedule to do stuff for them too, but I am always planning 6 months ahead, and that helps a lot.
When you come up with a good theme, how do you decide when and in which project to use it? Has it ever happened that you’ve kept back a great idea for years?
I have a pretty clear idea which riff or melody goes where. A few of the Witherscape riffs where supposed to be Nightingale stuff, but I never really got the right song for them, and it turns out the riffs themselves were written for a „yet unknown” project all along and then Witherscape turned up and a many ideas just worked straight out of the box!!
Which one of your projects would you say is the most successful, and which one did/do you like the best?
I guess Edge of Sanity and Bloodbath are the most successful stuff I have done so far.
I really really enjoy the Witherscape album, I am also pleased with the yet unreleased „Second Sky” album and the coming Nightingale album will rule as well!!
Is there a possibility for a live show? What are your plans after releasing the disc?
There are no live shows planned at the moment. But if a promoter cash up what we need to bring this band to the stage, then we’ll probably give it a shot if we can find the right members.
The EP is the next musical thing for Witherscape. We also wanna make sure we do lots of promotion for the current release.
