Wolves in the Throne Room Interjú

(scroll down for English Version)

Aaron Weaver-t, a Wolves in the Throne Room dobosát és frontemberét Skype-on kérdezgettük pár héttel a manchesteri fellépésük után.

Persze!

Mik a jövőbeli terveitek?

Mik a szerepek?

Természetesen én dobolok, ezentúl Randall Done-nal javarészt mi vagyunk felelősek a hangszín, a légkör megteremtéséért, tehát a mi munkánk még a billentyűk felvétele.

Mit jelent számodra a black metal?

Aaron Weaver, front man and drummer of Wolves in the Throne Room, has been interviewed on Skype couple of weeks after their gig in Manchester.

I think the obvious and default question is about the new album which has been released in September of last year. Are you happy with the selling and the feedbacks?

Well, I don’t really pay much attention to those kind of things. For me the record is such a personal thing, and it’s made out of necessity. We have no choice really, and that’s the most important thing for me. We make music for our true fans, and I can say that I’m very happy to hear that it seems like the people that love Wolves in the Throne Room, love Thrice Woven, and that does feel good. As far as mainstream acceptance, the sort of trendy people, who come and go in their interest with metal, that’s not something I pay much attention to. I can say that maybe more important than the record, is our shows and that’s been wonderful, the responses too, and our concerts in Europe had been fantastic and that’s the most important thing for us because that’s our source of energy, playing this music live in the front of all our friends and companions across the world.

My understanding is that the yourself and your brother are the key members of the band. Would you not mind please to introduce the other band members for the readers?

Sure! So Kody Keyworth who’s been playing guitar with us on stage for many years, is now officially a member of Wolves in the Throne Room, in the same way that Nathan and I are. We made that decision together, when Thrice Woven was about halfway completed, the album was fully written but we were still working on some tracking and on the mixing. And so Kody was able to contribute the music on Thrice Woven, he played a bit of guitar and did vocals, and was there at all the mixing process and that’s just a really excellent change for us, because for many years, in the early days, there’s always been a third person in Wolves in the Throne Room. On Diadem of the 12 Stars and Two Hunters, Rick Dahlin played guitar and did vocals, in a Black Cascade, Will Lindsay was in the band. It’s just on Celestial Lineage that was me and Nathan alone by ourselves. In addition to that, Brittany McConnell from Wolvserpent, a wonderful band from Boise, is playing keyboards and additional percussion. Peregrine Somerville is playing third guitar, so we can do all of the three guitar harmonies on stage, and occasionally filling in for me on drums is Trevor Deschryver, who plays in a doom band called Lycus. It’s very important for me to remain very energetically connected to the source of our energy which is this land where we live, maintaining the fires here and communicating with the spirits here. Right now that’s the way that I can serve or call the best.

I think you don’t have a bass guitar player, but I had the feeling that some kind of bass guitar is coming from somewhere. Are you are using electronics, or sampler, or any kind of modulation?

Yeah, the source is the bass synthesizer that Brittany is playing. We’ve always done that. I think the only record where we had a bass guitar was on Black Cascade through a more of a traditional rock and roll kind of sound. On the Thrice Woven all the bases played by myself with a vintage Minimoog which I prefer. I play bass guitar too, but there’s something about the base synthesizer that really works for Wolves in the Throne Room because it creates this very continuous low-end frequency. That is very connected to another sub conscious and the deeper energies of the earth.

Can you specify me please which genre of music do you play? Can I call it black metal, or progressive black metal?

Yeah good question and I think…I think black metal fits us perfectly.

What is your plan for the future, what’s the way forward?

Well as the future is very bright for us, especially now with Kody’s energy fully integrated into the band. They’re still get a lot of touring ahead of us, in February we’ll be on tour in the United States with Enslaved and Myrkur, that’s a Decibel Magazine tour. Then in summertime we’ll be playing festivals in Europe, I believe we are booked right now, but that’ll be all in July and August. At some time between now and then we’ll be in the studio as well, we have a lot of energy and inspiration to record more material right now, so there are certainly be another recording, probably an EP, coming from Wolves in the Throne Room. Well, I don’t know, it’s always hard to say how long it’ll take, but it certainly won’t be another five years before to release another piece of music.

Regarding the band, who is responsible for writing the music? Which are the roles? Who is responsible for what?

Me and Nathan split it about fifty-fifty. We both play guitar and create riffs and leads. I play all the drums of course, and me and Randall Done, our producer create the majority of the atmospherics, the synthesizers. Atmospheric sounds that are a big part of what we do, and now Kody is in the band, he’ll be also contributing riffs and a lot of concepts, and he’s also someone who is very skilled with electronics and synthesizers. He also makes dark ambient music in industrial music, so we all look forward to working with him more fully kinship creating us atmospheres which is…I don’t know..I love the riffs, and that’s the heartbeat at the centre of our music. But the atmosphere is so important as well and that’s me and my favourite part because it’s just wide open, there are no rules.

What’s the main the source of the inspiration behind your music? OK, I know about the Cascadians, about the mountains, about the area and the atmosphere, but do you have any kind of other sources which are influencing you?

Well of course. You hear it a lot in the lyrics, and the images on Thrice Woven. All of us are lovers of all mythology from all over the world but especially from Northern Europe, the old Norse stories, the old Celtic stories. Those old stories are in our blood, the stories that I loved just as a kid, that’s our religion, like that. So we have to connect us to the old ways and to our ancestors, so that’s always a source of inspiration. It’s not in nature, it’s a kind of a cliché to say that Wolves in the Throne Room is inspired by nature, but it’s very-very specific, it’s not even just the huge mountains and glaciers and the three thousand year old trees, which we are so blessed to live next to. But it’s the small things, it’s the humble plants that are in the forest right behind our studio, that have spirits inside them, and give great teachings and wisdom and healing the animals, too. This is the animal’s spirit, they are always with us and inspires us every day and give us a lot of strength.

You said to have kind of influence by the old Scandinavian, Northern European history, which is one of the questions on my list. So far I had the feeling that the Scandinavian bands, mostly Norwegians as Sweden, are influenced by the old Norwegian, old Viking philosophy and faith and religion, and it’s a big surprise to see it to have somebody, to have a batch of people on the opposite side of the globe having the same driver and the same background and influence, that’s really interesting to hear.

Those stories, they go so deep, they go beyond just the individual place and these are archetypal stories. That speaks to the experience of being a human, being on the planet. I think it just so happened that those northern stories are the ones that I connected with. Early in my life I remember getting a…the writer Joseph Campbell is an American, very famous guy and…I encountered a book of his when I was, I don’t know, eight or nine years old. And maybe just looking at the pictures at that point, but those images and those figures just get deep inside your mind and they get inside your dreams, and they’ve been there ever since. But it’s not just the northern mess for Wolves in the Throne Room because, you know, we do have this irrespective, because we do live in the New World, so to speak. In many ways we are strangers here because for the settlers and we’re just now becoming comfortable I think. If I has to say what Wolves in the Throne Room was about for me, that it’s the fundamental core, has to do the listening. Listening really-really quietly, and with great respect to the voice of the earth in this particular place. Just waiting, waiting with great patience, and great gratitude to be welcomed because here is very traumatized by the arrival of white people, and there’s a lot of spirits in the forests who were very angry and that’s for understandable reasons. For us it’s our job to listen with respect, and we’re so grateful that this music is a result of that, about that listening. You can do it anywhere, that’s the thing, with the earth is that no matter where you are on this planet you’re sitting on the earth, even if you’re in a high rise in Shanghai or you’re in the middle of London, the same energies are there, the same spirit are there. I think maybe they’re just not as loud so you have to listen all to more intensely.

Do you have any kind of musical education?

No, not at all, just playing in punk bands, and working at the DIY punk venue in Olympia and watching bands. Maybe that’s the way how we’ve learned the most is just watching our elders, that’s how we were initiated.

Do you have any kind of full time or part time job, or at the moment the band itself is our main occupation?

No, the band is there for us because we put out our own records through on our own label, that’s a full time job in itself. So yeah, we keep ourselves very busy.

Do do you have a family? How do they like this kind of lifestyle?

I’m married to a wonderful woman and we have a four year old son. And they understand it, they understand that I’m an artist, and it’s an all-consuming lifestyle, and when we’re in the studio working on a record, we’re deep inside and they might not see much of me for a while but they understand it. My wife’s a very intense person, too, she’s a practitioner of a very strenuous style of yoga and is very focused on the devotional aspect of it. So we understand each other in that way, we both chosen a goal quite extreme and have a certain amount of pain attached to practising them.

I think I have only one last and final question left my pocket, that’s quite an easy one, or that’s probably the most complicated: what does black metal mean to you?

It’s actually a very easy question. For me, and maybe we’ve already talked about it a bit but, it’s a music that rises up from the Earth. I know that other people have ideas about it, they have ideas that it’s about Satan and blasphemy and this and that, and that’s fine for some people. But that doesn’t make any sense to me, I don’t believe in Satan. That’s not a part of my life, for me the reason…and when I heard Emperor and Ulver, and these  Norwegian black metal bands, the reason I became so entranced was because it was so clear to me that the music was rising up out of the mountains, was rising up out of the ground, and was a very old sound, the sound that had been heard in a very long time. That’s the heart, and that’s accessible to anyone who chooses to go down this path and every person who listens. It’s gonna hear something different and that’s why black metal is always going to evolve and change and incorporate new voices, and that’s why no one can say what is black metal or what isn’t, no one has that right, because it’s a very individualistic, and a very personal thing. Has to do with us being free, free as individuals, to listen to our own hearts and listen to the voices that we hear in the wisdom that we believe in, and build a life around that instead of following the horde.

Many thanks!
