Iced Earth, White Wizzard, Fury UK – Koncertbeszámoló

(scroll down for English Version)

2011. november 24. @ Budapest, Club 202

Egy kemény számmal, az Over the Top-pal nyitottak, mely a 2010-es albumuk első, címadó dala.

Sok Iced Earth rajongó most láthatta először élőben Stu Blockot, az új énekest.

Plusz pontot érdemel a Riff király, Schaffer, akinek a Dystopia-n hallható munkája túlszárnyalja mindegyik Iced Earth albumot.

ENGLISH VERSION:

This Thursday, on November 24, Club 202 had the honour to present one of the most famous power/thrash metal bands at the moment, Iced Earth. The show was scheduled to start at 8 pm, but people started gathering up much earlier, anxious to experience the powerful metal explosion that followed that evening. The opening bands were Fury UK, whose name itself says that they are British, and White Wizzard, hailing from Los Angeles.

At only a few minutes after 8 pm, the first band of the night, the heavy metal trio Fury UK, jumped onto the stage and started their energetic performance. They played long sets of songs, blending them altogether into never-ending streams of riffs, solos, and amazing roars done by the frontman, Chris Appleton. The trio stopped only about three times in between these compositions to talk to the audience. Although it was still early, the club was already almost packed. However, most of the people kept to the back of the club, with beer safely in their hands. This was a sign for Chris, the guitarist, to invite them closer to the stage, asking them at the same time if they were standing quietly because they are on a Spice Girls concert. His brother Luke, who plays the bass and does occasional backing vocals, helped him put the crowd into a frenzy by encouraging them to shout more and more. The crowd didn’t seem much familiarised with their music, mainly because most of them came for the main act, but they did go crazy on Saviour and Death by Lightning. As the end came closer, the band started playing a slow song, and just as the people lulled into it, a heavier, aggressive part started, at which point the guitarist finally presented what he was capable of – an amazing solo, with improvisations, which fascinatingly included “playing the guitar with the microphone stand as a pick”. With this final bit, Fury UK finished their short gig, and freed the stage, with a lot of shouts and clapping, for the next band.

I must say that setting the stage up was done pretty fast, and it only took about 10 minutes between the bands to get this tedious part done. Very soon the lights faded, and we could hear an ominous music intro, which introduced White Wizzard to the stage. They started the gig with the heavy song Over the Top, the first song off their 2010 album of the same name. Just like with Fury UK, there were not many pauses between the songs; the whole show just flowed progressively, and the band switched between the songs so smoothly that the energy never stopped pouring out of their instruments. Soon after, we were happy to hear the material from the new album, such as the song called Flying Tigers, which was definitely a crowd-pleaser. It was quite nice to hear much diversity in their music, which Fury UK’s performance lacked a bit. The reason for this was probably the length of their sets – the bands arrived quite late at the venue; thus they had to squeeze both of their performances into only one and a half hours. Heavy and power metal always makes me somewhat sceptical of the quality of songwriting, all thanks to the common riffs and lyrical themes that usually dominate the music, but White Wizzard brought back to me some faith in the traditional metal genres. So, not surprisingly, the band did ignite the crowd and manage to prepare them well for the final act, Iced Earth.

For many Iced Earth fans the evening was an act of initiation of the new singer, Stu Block. The quality of his performance seemed to be an extremely crucial component, which the whole evening depended on. And yes, he did manage to fill the giant shoes that Matt Barlow left behind earlier this year. His vocal performance was completed by screams worthy of Tim Owens, and so seeing and hearing him live with Iced Earth undoubtedly felt as natural as rain. Moreover, Block’s communication with the audience, layered with jokes, was impeccable. The funny thing was that the club was decorated in a Native American style, which produced a nice set of ironical jokes, since the event took place on November 24, the American Thanksgiving Day.

Unlike with the opening bands, the crowd seemed to know every word to every song from the new, long-awaited album, Dystopia, as well as from the older works. Special cudos go to the “Riff Lord”, Schaffer, whose songwriting on Dystopia greatly surpassed all the other Iced Earth albums. However, the song that engaged the people the most was the beautiful Watching Over Me, which was quite a nice surprise on the setlist.

Moreover, all the musicians showed amazing skills and energy, and even though the new album does not bear the same style as the old Iced Earth albums, it most certainly contains the speed and power that was more than welcome on stage. However, for this part, I was a bit disappointed in the small amount of moshing, which only occurred a few times. The end of the show was done in a homely fashion – the self-titled song, Iced Earth, as the big finale, completed with a giant Hungarian flag in Block’s hands.
