Nightwish, Battle Beast, Eklipse – Koncertbeszámoló

(scroll down for English Version)

2012. április 29. @ Budapest, Papp László Budapest Sportaréna

A budapesti és környékbeli rajongók ismét teljes pompájában láthatták a legnagyobb szimfonikus metál banda előadását. Április 29-én a budapesti Sportarénában a Nightwish egy iszonyatosan hatalmas showt produkált, melyre öröm lesz emlékezni. A lenyűgöző Imaginaerum album meghallgatása után, a banda most élőben adta elő a számokat a rajongók számára.

Erre bizonyíték a rengeteg Nightwish pólóban bulizó közönség. In the End a Linkin Parktól. Azonban a legjobb fogadtatást Lady Gaga Paparazzija kapta.

A kedvenc részem a koncert akusztikus része volt, mely során a szokásos The Islander mellett eljátszották a Nemo-t is.

A fények a hangulatnak megfelelően kékes-fehéres homályba haloványodtak. A banda fantasztikusan kommunikált a közönséggel.

ENGISH VERSION:

Once again fans from Budapest and around got the chance to see the biggest symphonic metal band perform in their full splendour. On April 29, in the Sportarena in Budapest, Nightwish gave us a terrific, magnificent theatrical show to keep and cherish in our memories. After fully blowing our minds with the latest album, Imaginaerum, the band went on to create a perfect background for presenting it to their fans.

Even though there has been a lot of fuss around the new path the band chose about 7 years ago, I believe that the last year finally did them justice. Nightwish has struggled to subside the negative feedback their new singer, Anette, kept receiving, while at the same time they were creating what I find one of the best albums I’ve heard in a while. With this tour, Anette finally found her strength, her voice, and unleashed hell onto the audience.

However, before getting to their performance in Budapest, I need to point out that the two opening bands, Eklipse and Battle Beast, were quite good as well, despite the fact that almost everyone came to the show just to see the main act. Tons of Nightwish T-shirts and screaming fans confirmed this. Nevertheless, Eklipse did a great, but short show. They played around half an hour, mostly covers of popular songs such as Clocks by Coldplay, and In the End, which is originally by Linkin Park. The cover that got the biggest applause, though, was Lady Gaga’s Paparazzi. Now, the difference with Eklipse is that it’s a band of four girls, all of which play string instruments. They have no vocal parts in their music, making it that much fit better with the whole evening. Their stage decorations included street lamps with dimmed lights, while they wore strange eye patches and face paint. There was a kind of steampunk feel to their performance.

Battle Beast, on the other hand, was something completely different. Both their style and energy differed from that of Eklipse’s. They combine traditional heavy metal with powerful female vocals, adding many guitar riffs and solos to the mix. The singer produces a range of different vocals, with occasional help from the guys in the band. However, the audience did not greet them as strongly as they would, had Battle Beast been a support band for a power metal band, for example. If we neglect that tiny fact, though, it’s more than obvious that they were born for the stage.

The best part came next. After Battle Beast’s show, a white curtain came down. After a few ACDC songs, we began to hear intro music, while the curtain fluttered eagerly. The band soon climbed onto the stage, starting the first riffs of Storytime. At the first break of the music, the curtain fell down with a blast, revealing the band and the stage. They played for almost two hours, mostly songs from the new album, but Anette, the singer, also gave the old ones a shot. She did it with such spirit and magnificence. My favourite part was definitely the acoustic part of the show, where they, apart from the usual The Islander, played Nemo. At the point of the lyrics „soothing rain“ they released white confetti, which they completed at the end of the show as well. Apart from that they used fireworks, which they also finished the show with. Another feat of the concert was the epic song Song of Myself. They did not play the whole song, but excluded the spoken part. Instead, it was shown on the screen behind the band.

The last part of the concert was reserved for the famous music piece Finlandia, originally written by Jean Sibelius. At that point the lights were, suiting the occasion, dimmed to blue and white. Bands connection with the audience was just splendid. Everybody was there for them, as the band did their best to please just every face in the crowd.
