Soha nem gondoltam volna, hogy lesz majd egyszer egy olyan koncert, ahol a kedvenceim közül kettő is főműsorszám lesz, főleg ha figyelembe vesszük, hogy két teljesen eltérő stílust játszanak. De mégis itt van, a svéd Therion egyesülése az orosz Arkonával a legutóbbi európai turnéjukon. December 8-án sikerült utolérnem őket a lengyelországi Wroclaw-ban még a koncertjük elején. Az eseményt egy Eter nevezetű belvárosi klubba szervezték, ami nem is rég nagyon stílusosan újra lett dekorálva, a kialakított felső galéria miatt pedig kifejezetten alkalmas koncertek tartására.
Már láttam párszor a Theriont hogy elmondhassam, hozzászoktam a sokféle előzenekarhoz, akik a koncertjeik előtt szórakoztatják a közönséget. Ezen a turnén lehetőségünk nyílt látni és hallani a Heavenshine és Sound Storm nevezetű bandákat, és egyikük sem most alakult. A Heavenshine alapító tagjai már pár éve együtt játszottak egy Marshall nevezetű bandában. Később úgy döntöttek, hogy megalapítják a Heavenshine-t és kiadják az első nagylemezüket, a Black Aurorát még idén. Múlt vasárnap 18:30-kor ők nyitották a Theriont, akiket kedvenc bandáik egyikeként tartanak számon.
Egy Nightwish-es behatást is hallani lehet Miriam Ciciotti gyönyörű szoprán vokáljával kísért zenéjükben. A Heavenshine „Az operaház fantom”-jával, Andrew Lloyd Webber ugyanilyen nevű musicalének átdolgozásával zárta a szettet, melyet a Nightwish is átdolgozott és kiadott 2002-ben.
Miután a színpadot visszaállították, a Sound Storm lépett a színpadra. Egyszerűen nem tudom nem észrevenni, hogy van valami az olasz bandákban, ami miatt könnyen megállapítható, hogy honnan származnak. Az olaszországi Torinóból jöttek, a banda kicsivel több mint tíz éve játszik. Eddig két nagylemezük jelent meg, ezzel a turnéval pedig kiváló lehetőségük nyílt bemutatni zenéjüket egy változatos rajongótábornak, és ezt kiválóan kivitelezték.
A banda energiája szépen megemelte a hangulatot a klubban annak ellenére, hogy a közönség nagy része csak az éjszaka főműsorszámaira várt. Néhány dal, ami felkeltette az érdeklődésemet a Blood of Maiden, ami a közönség egy részét felpörgette, és a The Curse of the Moon volt, aminek a végén Philippe D’Orange, a banda énekese egy nagyon meggyőző farkasüvöltést imitált.
Eddig a pontig nem volt tolongás a színpad elején, de amint a Sound Storm büszkén elhagyta a színpadot, csak özönlöttek az Arkona rajongók a mosh pitbe. Az „Az’’” ismerős hangzásával, legújabb albumuk, a Slovo instrumentális nyitó dalával megkezdődött a pogány este. Arkona feltüzelte a közönséget az erőteljes és érzelmes Arkaim dalukkal, a szettlistát pedig a megszokottól kicsit eltérőbben folytatták. A szett valóban rövid volt, de hallhattunk olyan gyöngyszemeket, mint a „Goi Rode Goi” és a „Stenka na Stenku”, valamint egy gyönyörű duda/dob sz-lót.
Viszont az évek során az általam látott eddigi hatból ez volt az első Arkona koncert, ahol nem játszották az örök kedvenc „Ot Serdtsa k Nebu”-t. Azoknak, akik esetleg csak most kapcsolódnának be Arkona zenéjébe, a banda Oroszországból jött, így legtöbb zenéjüket és dalszövegüket átjárja a hagyomány, történelem, kultúra és a nyelv. Az Arkonát (az utolsó, 1168-ban lerombolt szláv pogány város után elnevezve) hivatalosan 2002-ben alapították, azóta pedig hat albumot adtak ki. Mesterien játszottak Wroclaw-ban, a közönség pedig egész koncert alatt tolta a headbanget, crowdsurfinget és wall of death-et. A Yarilo nevezetű dallal zártak, amit a rajongók már a koncert elején próbáltak kicsikarni, de az énekesnek, Mashának, csak egy „nyet” volt a válasza, a dalt a nagy fináléra tartogatták.

Ha az Arkona fellépése előtt a rajongók özönlöttek, az semmi volt ahhoz a szabályos népvándorláshoz képest, ami akkor ment végbe amikor a Therionnak készítették elő a színpadot. A közönség nagy része aki eddig az első sorban volt elhagyta a helyszínt, a helyükre pedig Therion rajongók jöttek. Szinte vágni lehetett a levegőben az izgalmat és a készülődést, mintha a rajongók egy újabb látványosság közeledtét érezték volna. Lassacskán a banda előlépett a színpadra, egyenként, arcukon óriási vigyorral. A banda már 25 éve aktív, így szinte lehetetlen hogy legyen olyan metál őrült, aki ne hallott volna a Therionról eddig. Ezt a hatalmas szimfonikus projektet Christofer Johnsson kezdte el a 80-as években, a több évtizednyi nagyszerű zene és lenyűgöző színpadi előadások mögött álló zseni. Az évek során jöttek mentek a tagok, de a banda minden turnén a legjobb formáját hozta a rajongók elkápráztatására. Ehhez hűen vasárnap a banda egy 20 dalos szettet játszott, amiben benne volt a teljes Vovin album, amit Christofer „mint a banda karrierjét megalapító” albumot tett bele, az album, ami az új világba küldte őket. Ezek után hallhattunk részleteket az egyik folyamatban lévő projektjükről, ami az Antikrisztus felemelkedéséről és bukásáról szól, melyet Vladimir Soloviev „A Short Story of the Anti-Christ”-ja ihletett. Megkérték a rajongókat hogy jól figyeljenek, később pedig mondják el a bandának, hogy van-e jövője az operának.
Feladatomat itt hajtom végre, és azt kell mondjam, nagyon várom hogy meghallgathassam, azt pedig még inkább hogy színpadon láthassam az elkészült művet. Vagyis: projekt jóváhagyva. Az előadás utolsó szakaszában a Deggial, Theli és Lemuria albumokról játszottak dalokat. Habár volt pár újabb album a Lemuria után, a banda úgy döntött, hogy azokat nem rakják bele a turné szettlistájába. Mindezek ellenére ilyen háttérrel és diszkográfiával bármilyen szettlista játszása közben egy élmény volt és egy élmény lesz hallgatni látni a bandát.
Végül a banda kimutatta köszönetét a közönségnek és kétszer visszatapsoltatta magát, és azzal is, hogy elmondták, óriási megtiszteltetés az a támogatás amit az évek során kaptak, és most már „boldogan halhatnak meg”. A szett utolsó dala az akusztikus Lemuria volt melyre mindenki együtt énekelt egy ilyen kielégítő éjszaka után.

Therion + Arkona in Wrocław, Poland on December 8, 2013

Never before have I thought that there would be a tour headlined by two of my favorite bands, especially considering that fact that they play completely different genres. But there it was, Swedish Therion united with the Russian Arkona in their latest tour around Europe. I managed to catch them in Wrocław, Poland, at the beginning of the tour, on December 8. The event took place in Eter, a downtown club that has recently been redecorated in a very nice manner, making it quite suitable for concerts with an overhead gallery.
I’ve seen Therion quite a few times to be able to say that I’ve got used to the variety of support bands that entertain us before each one of their shows. For this tour, we had the pleasure of seeing and hearing Heavenshine and Sound Storm, neither of which are still young bands. Heavenshine‘s founding members have actually been playing together for many years as a band called Marshall. They then decided to form Heavenshine and release their first full-length album Black Aurora only this year. Last Sunday at 18:30 they opened for Therion, who they name as one of their favorite bands. The influence of Nightwish could also be heard in their music accompanied by the beautiful soprano vocals of Miriam Cicotti. Heavenshine finished their set with The Phantom of the Opera, a cover of a song in Andrew Lloyd Webber’s musical of the same name that was also covered and released by Nightwish in 2002.
After the stage was reset, Sound Storm stormed onto the stage. I could help but immediately notice that there’s something about Italian bands that gives away their origins so easily. Coming from Torino in Italy, the band has been playing a bit over 10 years now. They’ve released two full-length albums so far, and on this tour they’ve been given an amazing chance to present their music to a great variety of fans, which they did splendidly. The band’s energy raised the atmosphere in the club quite nicely, even though most of the audience was just waiting for the main acts of the night. Some of the songs that caught my attention were Blood of Maiden, which ignited a part of the audience, and The Curse of the Moon, at the end of which Philippe D’Orange, the lead singer of the band, imitated wolf howls quite convincingly.
Up until this point, there was no crowd in front of the stage, but as soon as Sound Storm proudly left the stage, a stream of Arkona‘s fans took their positions in the mosh pit. With the familiar sounds of Az’, the opening instrumental track of their latest album Slovo, the pagan evening started. Arkona fired up the audience with the energetic, emotive song Arkaim, and then continued onto a setlist somewhat different that what we’re used to. It was a short set indeed, but we got to hear some of the jewels such as Goi Rode Goi and Stenka na Stenku, as well as a wonderful bagpipe/drum solo. However, this was the first of the six Arkona’s concerts that I’ve attended over the years that didn’t include the ever famous Ot Serdtsa k Nebu. For those who have only just tuned in to Arkona’s music, the band comes from Russian, and hence most of their music and lyrics are influenced by their tradition, history, culture and language. They officially formed as Arkona (after the last pagan Slavic city destroyed in 1168) in 2002 and released six albums since. They played their music masterfully in Wrocław and had the audience headbang, crowdsurf and do walls of death throughout the whole show. They ended with the song Yarilo that the fans tried to get the band to play earlier in the show, to which the singer Masha just said „Niet”, saving the song for the big finale.
If there was a stream of fans lining up to see Arkona before their part, it was nothing compared to the migration that happened while the stage was being prepared for Therion. Most of the audience that was in front of the stage left, and was replaced by Therion’s fans. The anxiousness and eagerness could be felt so strongly in the air, as the fans anticipated yet another spectacle. Soon enough, the band started walking onto the stage, one by one, with enormous smiles on their faces. With the band being active for over 25 years, it’s almost impossible for any fans of metal to not have heard of Therion before. This huge symphonic project was started in the 80s by Christofer Johnsson, the mastermind behind the decades of magnificent music and amazing stage performances. Over the years, many members have come and gone, but with each tour the band always gave its best to amaze their fans. Likewise, on Sunday the band played a set of 20 songs that included the whole Vovin album, which Christofer introduced as the one that ‘made their career as a band’, the album that sent them into the world. Afterwards, we could hear a few pieces from the upcoming project, a rock opera about the rise and fall of Antichrist, inspired by A Short Story of the Anti-Christ by Vladimir Soloviev. The fans were asked to pay attention and later let the band know if the opera has any future. Well, to do my task here, I’ve got to say that I’m absolutely looking forward to hearing it, but especially seeing it in full on stage. Therefore, project approved. The last part of the performance included songs from albums Deggial, Theli and Lemuria. Even though there were a few other, newer albums after Lemuria, the band decided not to include them in this tour’s setlist. Nevertheless, with such a history and discography, seeing the band perform any kind of setlist has always been and will be an absolute treat.
Eventually, the band thanked the audience by returning for two encores, but also by saying that they have nothing but respect for the support they’ve received over the years and that now they can ‘die happy’. The last song of the set was the acoustic Lemuria to which everyone sang completely satisfied by the night.
