Nos, a sludge műfaj sok zenekart magába foglal, melyek főképpen hangzásukban közösködnek.

A harmadik tétel, Me and My Shadow, lassan őröl, de nagyon szuggesztív.

ENGLISH VERSION:

Strangely enough, I haven’t heard much about 16 before, even though I’m quite interested in this genre and in this label. If it is Relapse then it can’t be a real big failure. It tells a lot about the music that according to the official biography the band was formed in 1992 because the founding members (guitarist Bobby Ferry, drummer Jason Corley, and singer Cris Jerue) needed a way to channel the sufferings of life out of themselves. Being Americans, they did not chose to do so by being sad and playing doom metal, but by being angry and playing a mixture of metal and hardcore later named sludge. Based solely on this, to most of the people it is possibly hard to imagine what’s the music like, especially regarding that sludge is not a really popular genre, many people don’t even know what it is. Well, sludge incorporates many bands, which are related to each other through their sound. In most of the cases, they sound as if being played in a swamp, the music is slimy, sticky, heavy and covered in mud. Since the genre has very diverse bands, the name of some bands might help to imagine the music of 16; Corrosion of Conformity, Down or Crowbar are bands similar to them.

The band was laid to rest in 2003, after 11 years of music but luckily, in 2007 they reassembled. The 16. year of the band 16 saw them writing songs for a new album, which led to the release of Bridges to Burn, which is a quite impressive view to behold. The giant, horned, five-eyed hellish panther-head full of piercings and embraced by two dragons having mass-graves on their tongues might lead us astray of the music, but adding the razorblades, skulls, crowns, femurs, and the thousands of capsules and pills covering the picture makes all doubts regarding the quality and direction of the music disappear. We won’t be disappointed, the cover art perfectly conveys the mood of the music.

Throw in the Towel sets the album off with a strange cymbal-play, which doesn’t really help the poor listener to decide what to expect, but then we get a riff so hardly southern-flavoured that we immediately rush to the bar for a bottle of whisky. Or for the shotgun, it depends. Imagine Zakk Wylde eating all the pills on the front cover to calm himself down but getting just the opposite result and you got the feeling of the songs. The word sludge almost manifests through the album, the guitars are filthy, mud is dripping from them, the drums are blunt, but powerful and each separate blow can be heard, and the vocals are drenched in dissatisfaction with the world and hate. This music is – without the slightest trace of sexism – is music for men. Filthy, rusty and smelling of alcohol and petrol, telling tales about lives gone wrong. There is an exceptional solo in the very first song already, also with lots of southern, Texas-like moods. The guys are very good at writing solos, they could have put a little more of them on the album. However, this way the solos get more attention and respect. The first song is a perfect opening thanks to its framed structure and aggressivity.

Skin and Bones is slower, here it is not the raw anger but the well-thought and brewed hate and wrath that is present, mainly manifested in the vocals. There is a good pressure-building part in the middle of the song and the framed construction is also used again. Musical refrains are a characteristic of the whole album, and thanks to this after a few listenings, the songs can be recognized. However, they can not easily be played in one’s mind, they are a bit too similar to each other for that. Maybe if I had the lyrics, they would be more apart. The third song, Me and My Shadow, grinds slowly, but it is very suggestive. I’d rather not list all the tracks, just say a few things about the best. Based on the beginning of the eleventh track entitled What Went Wrong? the listener would expect a ballad, but then, he would be terribly unfamiliar with the band. However, the song is a little different from the others. Not only is there hate, anger and wrath in it, but – as it is presumable from the title – great disappointment too. There is something similar in the quite accurately titled – Missed the Boat – closing song of the album. The ending of the album happens with a solution that does not cheat on the whole of the album, the instruments are suddenly cut off, no slow silencing, no outro, no mood-change. The titles are very well invented on the whole album, they fit in with the music. Affected by them, we can imagine the tattooed band jamming in shorts amidst empty beer cans, brown-tipped cigarette-ends and paper bags in the depths of a dusty old rehearsal room in Texas. There is a little rock ‘n’ roll feeling that the listener gets by many of the guitars. I wouldn’t list any more tracks, partly because no matter the rusty, filthy, unique mood and the dynamism, the songs unfortunately tend to melt and merge together a bit. Of course, this won’t be a problem to those who like angry music, but for those who look for the Neurosis, Cult of Luna-kind of sludge metal this is probably not the right place.

There are diverse moments, like the well-constructed solo and the bass of Flake throbbing like the worst migraine you ever had or the damn-how-good-rock-n-roll-this-is beginning of You Let Me Down (Again). (The work of brother bassist has to be admired on the whole album and – like in most of the cases in sludge – gets the attention it deserves.) But depsite these diversities, I fear that the album won’t be enough to keep the attention of the average extreme-music fan. If we had one less track on the disc, maybe we could pay attention to it all the way, but this way, want it or not, our attention goes astray time after time and it is hard to sit through it all concentrating. However, I don’t think that the band is the least worried by this fact, and they are right if they are so. As it was mentioned at the beginning, these guys didn’t form this band to make you think, to make you travel in your mind or to help you reach any higher artistic level. They just wanted to get rid of their pains via hate, anger and wrath. And maybe this album can help others reach the same goal. People listening to angry music are often misunderstood, the real reason for them being – at least in most of the cases – the need to heal their scars inflicted by their everyday, messy, humiliating and ignorant lives. This disc can be a medicine, a therapy if used in the correct way and quantity. Just like the pills on the cover.
