Nem is olyan régen, az új Trail of Tears lemez kapcsán tettük fel a kérdést, hogy ki az, aki Norvégiáról nem a black metálra asszociál. Itt az ideje megfordítani a kérdést: ki az, aki a black metálról nem Norvégiára asszociál? A műfaj bölcsője mellett azért számos olyan ország felsorolható, ahol jobbnál jobb black lelhető fel. A franciák, a németek, az írek és az amerikaiak rengeteg erős lemezzel a mezőny zászlóshajóinak számítanak a norvégok mellett. Az olaszokról ugyanakkor valahogy ritkán jut az ember eszébe a black, előbb asszociál a Lacuna Coilra és a Rhapsody of Fire-re, mint mondjuk az Aborymra, a Spite Extreme Wingre, a Janvsra, vagy a Thee Maldoror Collective-re – pedig az underground olasz black igenis kiváló együtteseket ad a szcénának.
Az Absentia Lunae hét éve erősíti ezt a felhozatalt. 2004-es, saját kiadású „Marching upon Forgotten Ashes” lemezük jórészt pozitív kritikákat söpört be, majd 2006-ban az együttes egy nagyon erős lemezt készített el „In Vmbrarvm Imperii Gloria” címmel. A lemez egyszerre volt old-school black, valamint modern, letisztult anyag, remek dallamokkal, változatos témákkal. Ezt követően hosszú csend következett a zenekar körül. A tagok persze nem lustálkodtak az eltelt évek során, több projekt is kapcsolódik a nevükhöz, melyek közül elsősorban a gitáros hölgy, Climaxia csapata, a Melencolia Estatica érdemel külön figyelmet.
Az Absentia Lunae hosszú hallgatását a márciusban megjelent „Historia Nobis Assentietvr” lemez törte meg. Az anyag nem közvetlen folytatása az előző albumnak, de nem is teljesen váratlan fordulat az olaszok részéről. A lemez valami olyasmi, mintha a demó-időszakos Mayhemet jól összekevernénk a Thorns vagy a Dodheimsgard visszafogottabb indusztriális témáival, az elektronikát csak egészen finoman adagolva, és egy kevés tiszta vokált (valami olyasmit, mint amit a Deathspell Omega legutóbbi kislemezének a végén is hallhattunk) is szórnánk a mixbe. A légkört olasz dalszövegekkel políroznánk tovább, ami az egzotikum mellett a hangzásával is sokat emel a hangulaton – életemben nem gondoltam volna, hogy ez a nyelv képes ilyen gonosz atmoszférát kelteni.
A lemez hangzásáról is érdemes szót ejteni: ahogy az előző lemezen is, a sound itt is teljesen a helyén van, egyedül a néhol géppuskaszerűen zakatoló dobokkal vagyok elégedetlen.
Minden hozzávaló megvan egy nagyon erős lemezhez, és az olaszok nem is hibáznak nagyot. Az intró a rádió-beállításból induló monumentalitással, majd a nyers olasz vokállal rögtön megteremti a hangulatot – az egyetlen probléma az, hogy ezt hat percen keresztül teszi, és bizony ennek a fele is elég lett volna. Innentől azonban sebességbe kapcsol a lemez, és egyetlen perc üresjárat nélkül kapunk csaknem negyven perc minőségi blacket.
A zene megint nagyon ügyesen egyensúlyoz a régi és az új határvonalán. Az ortodox rajongók nyugodt szívvel hallgathatják, mert nem valami modern poszt-blekk dologgal akarják őket a sírba tenni, de aki vevő a DHG-TMK-Aborym-Thorns vonalán mozgó indusztriálisabb, esetleg militaristább dolgokra, az sem fog csalódni.
Akkor ki fog csalódni? Aki a zenekartól az előző lemez újrajátszását várta, az mindenképpen. A két lemez között nem annyira éles a határvonal, de az eltelt három év nyomot hagyott az együttesen. Nyersebbek, indirektebbek lettek, a melódiák jobban elbújnak, mint az előző albumon, így ez az anyag nehezebben befogadható. Be kell vallanom, engem az „In Vmbrarvm Imperii Gloria” direktebb, gonoszabb atmoszférája jobban megfogott.
Az is csalódni fog, aki Melencolia Estatica lemezt vár a zenekartól. Climaxia projektje egészen más hangulatvilágot ad vissza, ami minden szempontból méltó párja az Absentia Lunae munkásságának – sőt, néha túlmutat azon. Azt az atmoszférát viszont nem érdemes itt keresni.
Összességében a lemez erősre sikerült, aki kapható erre a stílusra, az nyugodtan tegyen egy próbát az albummal, érdemes.

Not so long ago we’ve asked a question in connection with the new Trail of Tears record, asking that who’s not thinking of black metal when hearing of Norway. Now it’s high time to reverse the collocation, and ask that who is not thinking of Norway when hearing of black metal. There are plenty of countries where quality black can be found, apart from the cradle of the genre. France, Germany, Ireland and the US can be considered as flagships of the scene. On the other hand, Italy is rarely thought of in this context; the country is more likely associated with Lacuna Coil and Rhapsody of Fire instead of Aborym, Spite Extreme Wing, Janvs, or Thee Maldoror Collective. This seems rather strange, as the flourishing Italian underground has presented fine bands to the scene.
Absentia Lunae is already strengthening this prominent list for seven years. Their 2004 effort, ‘Marching upon Forgotten Ashes’ received mostly positive reviews; then the band created a rather strong record in 2006, entitled ‘In Vmbrarvm Imperii Gloria’. The album was old-school black and some sort of modern, polished material at the same time, containing fine melodies and diverse tunes. The following period was a rather quiet around the band. The members weren’t bored, of course, they have participated in multiple projects meanwhile, most prominent of those is Climaxia”s (Absentia Lunae”s guitarist) group, Melencolia Estatica .
However, the band’s long absence ended this March, with the release of ‘Historia Nobis Assentietvr’, the new full-length. The record is not a straight continuation of their previous material, but it isn’t a completely unexpected turn of events either. The record is like mixing demo era Mayhem with a bit of the more laid-back industrial passages of Thorns or Dodheimsgard, spicing it with some electronics and finally adding a pinch of clean vocals (something like what we could hear at the end of the latest Deathspell Omega EP). The atmosphere is refined further with Italian lyrics, which – apart from the fact of it being an obscure choice of language in black metal – sounds surprisingly evil. The overall sound of the record is fine: everything fits in place perfectly, just like on the previous one, my only concern is the machinegun-like pitch of the drums, which is really disturbing sometimes.
Everything needed for a good record is here, and these Italians make no big mistakes. The intro kicks off with some radio-tuning, bends into some monumental neo-classical passages, accompanied by harsh Italian vocals. It creates the atmosphere in an instant, that’s why I can’t understand why does it have to be six minutes long – half the length would just have been enough. From this point on, the record accelerates to full speed, though: we get almost 40 minutes of quality black metal, without a single minute of fillers.
The music is very well balanced on the borderline of the old and the new again. Orthodox fans can listen to it without having to worry about the band trying to sell them some sort of modern post-black stuff, but those who like the more industrial-martial sort of the genre, like what DHG-TMK-Aborym and Thorns play won’t get disappointed either.
Who’s going to get disappointed? Whoever expected the band to repeat their previous record most certainly will. There is nothing like a distinct borderline between the two albums, but the past three years had left their mark on the band. They became harsher and somewhat more indirect: the melodies are better-hidden this time, so the material is more difficult to dwell into. I have to admit, that I prefer the more direct, more evil atmosphere of ‘In Vmbrarvm Imperii Gloria’.
Those, who expect this record to be something similar to Melencolia Estatica will also get disappointed. Climaxia’s project provides quite a different atmosphere that is a worthy competition to Absentia Lunae – what’s more, sometimes it does even better than the main band. However, that atmosphere is not to be found here.
The record provides a good overall experience, so whoever likes this style should give it a spin, it’s really worth it.
