Fél évvel ezelőtt félre kellett volna tennem egy üveg Captain Morgan rumot! Tudtam, hogy mikor megjelenik az új Alestorm album, szükségem lenne a jamaikai fűszeresre. Aki ismeri a bandát, tudja, hogy a tavaly megjelent első album óta a skót srácok megállás nélkül turnéztak a világ különböző tájain. Egy lemez erejéig a srácok lehorgonyoztak, és sikerült egy olyan produkciót összehozniuk, amiben egyszerűen nem tudok kivetnivalót találni.
A Black Sails at Midnight-ról összességében elmondható, hogy „tipikusan Alestorm”-os:
Chistopher Bowes fantáziadús szintis játéka, mely olykor harmonikává vagy hegedűvé alakul a zenész kezében, valamint a fülbemászó gitárdallamok elegye. A skót akcentussal előadott szövegek pedig természetesen a kalózok mondavilágából, legendáiból és mulatozásaiból erednek. A lemez a Quest című lendületes nótával indul, melyben bemutatják nekünk a kalózélet értelmét:
„We sail the endless oceans, we sail the raging sea, our quest is never ending, it leads us to destiny…”
Ez a tétel az epikusabb hangzású dalok közé tartozik, melyből erre a lemezre több került, mint a Captain Morgan’s revenge-re. Egyedülálló tétel a To the end of our days című lassú, melankolikus ballada a kalózok végnapjairól.
Természetesen a mulatozós nóták sem maradnak ki a repertoárból, mint a Pirate song, vagy a That Famous ol’ spiced, melyek biztos megteremtik az egyedülálló hangulatot egy Alestorm koncerten. Elképzelem, ahogy részeg kalózkendős, Alestorm pólós rajongók éneklik együtt az énekessel, hogy „Bring me jar of that famous ol’spiced”! A bulizós dalok közül legjobban a Keelhauled tetszett, a hegedűtémák, harmonikafutamok és a részeg kalózkórus hallatán akartam először igazán elővenni azt az üveg rumot.
A Black Sails at Midnight a Wolves of the sea című számmal zárul, melyet már ismerhetünk a Leviathan EP-ről.
Az Alestorm egy egyedülálló zenekar, tehetséges és kreatív zenészekkel. Az új album amellett, hogy hű maradt az „igaz Skót kalóz metál” koncepcióhoz, rengeteg kísérletezős részt is tartalmaz, így sokkal érdekesebb, szórakoztatóbb, mint a Captain Morgan’s revenge. Nálam mindenképpen benne van az év 10 legjobb lemezében!

ENGLISH VERSION:
Half year ago, I should have put aside a bottle of Captain Morgan’s rum! I felt that when the new Alestorm album will be released, I would need that Jamaican spicy. Those, who know the band know that since the release of their first album, the scottish lads toured a lot in different places of the world. The ship of the band was harboured to make a new disc, and the pirates made an absolutely outstanding album!
The style of Black Sails at Midnight is typically Alestormish: the synth play of Christopher Bowes, which transforms sometimes into an accordion or a violin in his hands, blending with catchy guitar themes. The lyrics are based on pirate legends, and are interpreted with a scottish accent. The cd starts with a powerful and heavy song called The Quest which is about the meaning of the life of pirates:
„We sail the endless oceans, we sail the raging sea, our quest is never ending, it leads us to destiny…”
This track is one of the more epic ones, which are present on this disc in greater number than on the previous one. To the End of Our Days is an outstanding song, a melancholic ballad about the last days of pirates.
Obviously, the rollicking tracks are also here, like Pirate Song or That Famous Ol’ Spiced. These surely make an Alestorm gig unforgettable. I imagine drunken fans in Alestrom t-shirts and pirate headbands singing „Bring me a jar of that famous ol’ spiced” along with the singer!
My absolute favourite among the party songs is Keelhauled, because of the catchy violin and accordion themes. During this track, [i]I’d really like to bring out that bottle of rum!
Black Sails at Midnight ends with Wolves of the Sea, which we already know from the Leviathan EP.
Alestorm is a unique band with young and talented musicians. The new album is a true scottish pirate metal album, but also has a lot of experimental parts. That mixure make this album really interesting, fascinating, and much better than Captain Morgan’s revenge.
In my opinion, this disc has a certain place in the top 10 metal albums of 2009.
