A következő percben jön a trauma (talán fekete lyukba zuhantunk) – kemény zene, hörgés, a lélek elpusztítása. A zenei történelem egyik legerősebb hangulatú albuma. Az egyik legjobb, amit valaha véleményeztem.
Iceland is a great country (it is one of my dream destinations)- beautiful nature, great national football team, and also perfect music. At least one band, Almyrkvi is evidence of this. Their debut album Umbra presented a real surprise for the kind of great music people can create.
Some sources would claim that Almyrkvi plays unearthly black metal – and I have to agree with them, because the first tones of Vaporous Flame prepare us for something special. For me, it is hard to compare Umbra to any another albums. The atmosphere from the biggest distances of the universe (cold, solitude) together with beautiful melancholy and the high level of instrumental side lead us to a pure masterpiece. Changes of moods, tempo, alternation of vocal techniques- the play times of songs (over 9 minutes) give an opportunity to fill them with perfect ideas. Really devastating masterpiece. The second tune Forlorn Astral Ruins is another evidence of this. Just like the whole of Umbra. Together, we can hear six songs on this album, and there are no weak pieces – it’s a strong, compact record. If you are looking for some monotonous music where everything is predictable, boring and without original ideas, Umbra will be not your favourite one. As I have written before, the alternation of tempo and changes in moods are nothing unusual. And the same is true for vocal techniques. In one minute, we are listening to a calm part, feeling like being lost in the universe, and the only thing we are able to perceive is music. In next second everything gets worse (maybe we find black hole)- hard music, growls and the devastation of our soul. And then again, some softer part with clean vocals, melodic guitar etc…. Everything gets together so well. And this is how we can describe all songs in Umbra. The instrumental side of the album is also on a high level- I’d mainly highlight the great guitars and their melodic passages. Almyrkvi prepares us a mix of black and doom metal- the best of both. But the best element of this album is definitely the atmosphere. You are part of the whole universe, and the whole universe is part of you. Wide range of human emotions, many ideas crossing your brain, many feelings crossing your heart. Pure devastation. A must hear. One of the best atmospheres of music history. One of the best albums I have ever reviewed.
