Kilencedik lemezén – mely már harmadik a Pasi helyére érkezett Tomi Joutsennal – újra Kalevalás sztorit dolgozott fel, ezúttal az Ég Kovácsáról, a pár éve megújult és új erőre kapott finn csapat. A kiváló visszatérés (Eclipse) és az azt követő Finnországban szintén bearanyozódott Silent Waters után most itt a Skyforger, mely a gitáros Esa szerint az eddigi legdallamosabb lemezük. Ezt szerencsére én is megerősíthetem. Tulajdonképpen egy nagy dallamorgiáról van szó, melyhez minden hangszer, így az ének is hozzá teszi a magáét. Travis Smith újra csodás köntösbe öltöztette a korongot, így nem csak hallani, de látni, kézbe venni is élmény a CD-t.
A legjobb Amorphis hagyományokat felelevenítő, zongorával nyitó és azzal többször visszatérő, változatos nóta a Sampo, sok dallammal, kiváló hangszeres betétekkel, a vége felé pedig orgonaszólóval. Visszafogott kezdés után csap a húrok közé a klipes Silver Bride, melynek verzéje csendes, melankolikus (érdemes odafigyelni a hangszerelésére!), refrénje intenzív és hörgős éneket is hoz. Lassú, melodikus zongorás bevezetővel indul a szomorkás refrénű, mégis energikus From The Heaven Of My Heart, melynek szólója fülbemászó. Kissé téma- és harmóniahalmozó dal a szinte végig lendületes Sky Is Mine. Gitártémája pulzálást visz a zenébe, melyben újra van orgonaszóló és abból kibúvó gitárvirga is. Húzónóta. A címében szereplő fenevadhoz illően hörgős énekre épül a viszonylag grúvos, súlyosabb megszólalású, középtempós Majestic Beast, melynek némileg tempósabb refrénjében a tiszta hang is felbukkan azért. Visszhangosan csengő gitárjátékra és zongorára épülő szomorkás, de a reményt is felsejdítő dal a My Sun, melynek sűrűbb refrénjében eleinte hamisnak hat a disszonáns harmónia és dallamvezetés (mintha a magnó húzná a szalagot), furulyaszólója viszont gyönyörű. Csendes gitár és furulya teremt éteri hangulatot a Highest Star elején, a furulya a verzék színezésében is fontos szerepet kap. Ezeket ellenpontozza a tiszta és hörgősebb éneket is hozó refrén és az egészen dzsunga befejezés. Akusztikus hangszerek fenséges összjátéka vezeti fel a lemez egyik csúcspontját jelentő, riffelős refrénű Skyforger-t, melyet a billentyűs hangszerek viszonylag domináns jelenléte mellett női kórus tesz még izgalmasabbá. Gitármelódia nyitja a hamar zúzásba forduló, jól megkomponált énektémákkal és kórusokkal megtámogatott, ízes szólójú Course Of Fate-et. Kissé galoppozós gitárfelvezetéssel, majd hörgéssel indul a From Earth I Rose, verzéje furulyás, melodikus, refrénje fülbemászó. A dal végén a fúvós, pengetős, billentyűs szólókomplexum kifejezetten figyelemreméltó!
A szokásos módon tömör, némiképp koszos, jellemzően Amorphis-os hangzású anyag a Skyforger. Az összkép esetleg lehetne hajszállal áttekinthetőbb vagy a basszus soundja kicsit karakteresebb, de ettől függetlenül remek lemez ez, mely bár nem tér le a kitaposott ösvényről, mégis hoz apró változásokat a zenébe. A korábban megszokott és általam megkedvelt orgonatúltengést ezúttal zongora és furulya váltotta fel, a tiszta és a hörgős énekhangok pedig nagyon jó arányban vannak jelen, kiválóan illeszkedve a zenéhez, a hangulathoz. Talán sokaknál nem veszi majd fel a versenyt ez a lemez az Elegy-vel, hiszen nincsenek rajta igazán kirobbanó slágerek, „csak” izgalmas, változatos, mégis egységesen színvonalas dalok, melyek miatt nagyon szerethető és szórakoztató az anyag. Szinte minden dalban akad valami zseniális, valami igazán emlékezetes, csak meg kell várni, míg kibontja szirmait. Minél többször hallom, annál jobban megnyílik ez a sok figyelmet igénylő anyag. Lejátszás indul! Újra és újra! 9 (De lehet, hogy nem sokáig!)

On their 9th album – which is the third one with vocalist Tomi Joutsen instead of Pasi – the regenerated Finnish band again adapts a story of the Kalevala, this time of the blacksmith of the skies. After their excellent return (Eclipse) and the succeeding Silent Waters (that got to be a huge success in Finland) here’s Skyforger which is, according to Esa, their most melodic record so far. Fortunately, I can also confirm that. Actually, what we have here is a big orgy of melodies to which every instrument and the vocals add their parts. Travis Smith again dressed the album in a nice form so it’s not only to listen to the CD but to have a look at it and hold in your hands.
Sampo is a varied track evoking the best Amorphis traditions with a piano opening and returning later also, and with a lot of melodies, excellent instrumental parts and an organ solo at the end. The video track, Silver Bride, sets in after a modest opening with a silent, melancholic (check the instrumentation!) verse, and the chorus has intense and grunting vocals too. From The Heaven Of My Heart with a sad yet energetic chorus starts with a slow, melodic, piano opening, and its solo is very catchy. The dynamic Sky Is Mine is a bit cumulating in themes and harmonies. The guitar theme gives pulsation to the music in which there’s again an organ solo and guitar virtuoso part. It’s a real pulling one. The relatively groovy, heavier, mid-paced Majestic Beast, which, according to its title, is based on grunting vox, has some clean vocal themes in the faster chorus. The little bit sad but indicating some hope My Sun is based on reverberated guitar play and piano, and at first the dissonant harmony and melodies sound out of tune (as if the tape recorder play the tape slowly) in the thick chorus, but the flute solo is beautiful. At the beginning of Highest Star silent guitar and flute create an ethereal atmosphere, and the flute also gets a role in the colouring of verses. These are contrapunted by chorus with both clean and grunting vocals and the tough ending. One of the highlights of the record is the title track, having a riffing chorus, opened by excellent play of acoustic instruments and the song is also interesting due to the female choir beside the dominant synth. Course Of Fate starts with a guitar melody and then the tune turns into crushing, there are well-composed vocal and chorus parts, and a tasty solo as well in it. From Earth I Rose begins with a little bit galloping guitar theme then grunting, the verse has flute in it and is melodic, and the chorus is catchy. And the brass, string and keyboard play at the end is especially noteworthy.
Skyforger has traditionally a solid, a bit dirty, typically Amorphisque production. Maybe the whole thing could be a bit more perspicuous, or the bass could be a bit more unique but apart from this the record is excellent, and although it does not leave their path yet it brings tiny changes in the music. The much organ that I got to like earlier is changed for flute and piano, and the ratio of clean and raw vocals is also good, and fit the music and the mood well. Maybe for most people it could not compete with Elegy since there are no really hit songs on it, „just” exciting, varied yet high-standard tracks due to which the material can be liked very much and it’s entertaining. There are great and catchy things in almost every song so it needs some time to grow on you. The more I hear it, the more it opens for me. Push play again. Again and again. (But maybe not for long!)
