Az orosz Arkona az utóbbi években egyre nagyobb ismertségnek és népszerűségnek örvend a világ minden táján. Bár stílusuk a 2002-es kezdetektől pagan folk metal, albumról albumra egyre több újítást hoznak, ezzel színesítve az amúgy is gyönyörű szláv népzenére épülő metalt. Legújabb lemezük, a Slovo („A Szó/Az Ige”, de jelent „Regét” is) ez alól nem kivétel, sőt, minden tekintetben felülmúlja nagyszerű elődeit is! Az erősebb, komplexebb és himnikusabb új albumot akadémiai kórus, kamarazenekar és a folk/folk metal színtér kitűnő zenészeinek vendégszereplése erősíti.
A kelet-európai térség vezető zenekara ezzel is ráirányítja a folk/pagan metalt kedvelők figyelmét a nagyszerű és nagyméretű orosz, ill. keleti szláv folk/pogány zenei színtérre. Oroszországból a vezető helyi népi zenekar, a Vedan’ Kolod’ vagy a helyi folk/pogány metal színtér nagyszerű régebbi zenekara, a Svarga és feltörekvő tehetségei, a Rarog’ és a Kalevala képviselői, míg Nyugat-Európából a svájci Eluveitie tagjai vendégeskednek a Slovo-n. Mindezeknek köszönhető, hogy minden eddiginél több népi hangszert hallhatunk a lemezen!
Az album minden dala egységesen erős, persze vannak személyes kedvenceim, mint a nyitó Arkaim, a Leshiy, az Odna, az akusztikus Tam Za Tumanami vagy a klipes Stenka Na Stenku. A komplexebb hangzásban közrejátszik a klasszikus- és népzene ötvözése a pagan metal világgal. Kemény riffek, kétlábdob, hörgés és tiszta ének keveredik a kórusokkal és autentikus hangszerek (cselló, duda, furulyák, doromb, hegedű, balalajka, stb.) dallamaival. Az albumon akusztikus dalok és átvezető tételek is találhatóak, így összesen a 14 szám közel egy órányi élményt nyújt.
Az albumot az Az’ („Minden kezdet kezdete”) című intró indítja, csodás cselló- és dudajátéka hamar belevarázsolja az embert egy letűnt kor letűnt világába. Nekem a kedvenc intróim közé került első hallgatásra. Az első teljes dal az Arkaim, az Oroszországban feltárt ősi városról, az indo-európai civilizáció vélt bölcsőjéről szól. A dal aktuális üzenete, hogy őrizni kell a hagyományokat, a feledésbe merült régi értékeket újra fel kell fedezni. Az epikus gitárriffek mellett kitűnő kórus, duda- és vonósjáték emeli a fennkölt hangulatot. A harmadik szám, a Bol’no Mne („Fáj nekem”) címéhez igazodva szomorú, búskomor tétel. Masha fájdalmas éneke nagyon eredeti, illik a szöveghez, mely arról szól, hogy az ember a természet pusztításával önmagát pusztítja ki. A természet témakörénél maradva a következő dal a Leshiy, a szláv mitológia gonosz erdei szelleméről szól, aki erdejét védi a betolakodótól. A dalban nagyszerű, pörgős harmonikadallam van és figyelemre méltó a duda és furulya együttműködése is. Az egész dal hatalmas, kedvencem is lett hamar! Az ötödik dal a Zakliatie, azaz „Varázsige”, egy pogány imádság a szláv főistenhez, Rodhoz. Hangulatát tekintve nagyon hasonlít a kislemezes akusztikus Goi, Rode, Goi!-hoz, az ősi vallás papjainak szertartását idézi lelki szemeink elé. A hetedik dal előtt a Predok („Ős”) címre hallgató átvezető van, majd jön a Nikogda („Soha”), mely zúzós death metalos intróval indul (ez talán a dalban közreműködő Eluveitie-nek köszönhető). A kemény, death-es riffek és dobtéma végigmegy a dalon, melyben olyan fontos témáról énekel az orosz csapat, mint a hagyományok és szabadság megőrzése és továbbadása a jövő nemzedékei számára. A nyolcadik dal a Tam Za Tumanami („A köd mögött”) egy akusztikus ballada, harcba ment kedvesét sirató lány fájdalmát meséli el. A refrénben felcsendülő dudadallam és dorombjáték és énekkórus egyszerűen csodás!
A címadó Slovo előtt még elhangzik egy újabb átvezető, a Potomok („Leszármazott”). A címadó dal az ősi hit igéjének erejéről beszél. Melodikusabb, lassabb tétel, szomorkás furulyajátékkal. Masha éneke itt is átható, érzelmekben gazdag és erős. A következő dal (Odna – „Egyedül”) a magányról, az élet nehézségeiről szól ebben a rohanó világban. Kitűnő balalajkadallam színesíti az amúgy is zseniális dalt, szintén egyik kedvenc darabom az új lemezről. A tizenkettedik tétel ismét egy akusztikus darab, a Vo Moiom Sadochke… („Kertecskémben…”), mely egy gyászoló anyáról szól, akinek fia harcban esett el. Az utolsó előtti dal a nyár elején megjelent kislemez címadó dala, a Stenka Na Stenku („Fal a falnak”), melyhez kitűnő klip is készült, bemutatva az ősi szláv szokást, mely harcedzetté tette a szláv férfiakat. Fülbemászó harmonika- és furulyadallama, pörgős tempója van, igazi pogózós darab. A zárótétel a Zimushka azaz „Telecske”. A vezető orosz népi zenekarral, a Vedan’ Kolod’-dal közös produkció egy szibériai népdal feldolgozása. A szomorú, lassú dal egy pár tragikus sorsát meséli el. A melankolikus hangulatot fokozza a duda bús játéka.
A dalok mellett szót érdemel az album grafikája. Minden dalhoz témájának megfelelő, gyönyörű kép készült korábbi grafikusuk, Kris Verwimp (Vintersorg, Månegarm, Thyrfing, stb.) jóvoltából.
Összességében ismét egy nagyon erős, sőt, minden eddiginél erősebb anyagot készített a tehetséges orosz zenekar. Tele van jobbnál jobb dalokkal, szebbnél szebb témákkal és csodálatos hangszerekkel (leginkább a duda és cselló állandósítása örömteli számomra, no meg a balalajka szereplése). Ezt az albumot minden bizonnyal igen nehéz lesz felülmúlni!

ENGLISH VERSION:
The Russian Arkona has an increasing level of popularity and fame in recent years all around the world. Although their genre is still pagan folk metal from their beginning in 2002, they take more and more innovations to their newer albums, embellishing their metal music which based on beautiful Slavic folk music. Their upcoming album, Slovo („The Word”, but it means „Myth”, too) isn’t exception, even it surpasses its great predecessors in all aspects! The stronger, more complex, more hymnic new album is strengthened by academical choir, chamber orchestra and excellent guest musicians from the folk/folk metal scene.
The leading band of the Eastern European region attracts the attention of the folk/pagan metal fans to the great and big Russian and Eastern Slavic folk/pagan music scene. From Russia, the local leading folk band, Vedan’ Kolod’, the great older folk/pagan metal band Svarga and the members of the young talented Rarog’ and Kalevala, while from Western Europe, members of Eluveitie are guests on Slovo. Thanks to all of these, we can hear even bigger amount of folk instrument on this album!
All songs of the album are strong; of course there are personal favourites for me, like the first Arkaim, Leshiy, Odna, the acoustic Tam Za Tumanami or the clip-song Stenka Na Stenku. In the more complex sound; the combination of classical and folk music with the pagan metal world interplays. Heavy riffs, double bass, growls and clean vocals mixed with choirs and tunes of authentic instruments (cello, bagpipe, flutes, jaw harp, violin, balalaika, etc.). The LP features acoustic songs and interludes too; the entire material with 14 tracks gives nearly one hour of experience.
The album begins with the intro titled Az’ („The Beginning of all Beginnings”). Its wonderful cello- and bagpipe melodies quickly enchant the listener into a predeceased world of a past era. After the first listening it became one of my favourite intros. The first full song is Arkaim, about an archeologically discovered ancient city in Russia, which is thought to be the creed of the Indo-European civilization. The actual message of the song is to protect our traditions and rediscover the forgotten old values. In addition to the epic guitar riffs, perfect choir, game of bagpipe and bowed instruments increase the sublime atmosphere. The third track is Bol’no Mne („It’s Painful for Me”), according to its title, it’s a sad, gloomy song. Masha’s painful singing is very original, fits to the lyrics, which says, that mankind destroying the nature destroys itself, too. Staying around the topic of nature, next song is Leshiy, about the evil forest spirit of the Slavic mythology, who protects his forest against the encroachers. The song has lovely, fast accordion tunes and the cooperation of bagpipe and flute is also considerable. The whole song is awesome, it became my favourite soon! The fifth track is Zakliatie, aka „Incantation”, a Pagan prayer to the main Slavic god, Rod. Its atmosphere is very similar to the acoustic version of Goi, Rode, Goi! of the EP. It evokes the ritual of the priests of the ancient faith to our spiritual eyes. Before the seventh track there’s an interlude called Predok („Ancestor”), then comes Nikogda („Never”), which begins with smashing death metal intro (maybe because of the supporting Eluveitie). The hard, deathish riffs and beats go through the song, which lyrics are about the important topic of protecting the traditions and freedom and passing them to the future generations. The eighth song is Tam Za Tumanami („Behind the Mist”), an acoustic ballad about the pain of a girl, who cries after her beloved who went to war. The bagpipe melody, jaw harp and choir, which appear in the chorus, are simply beautiful!
Before the title-song Slovo there’s another interlude, Potomok („The Descendant”). The title-song tells about the power of the word of ancient faith. A melodic, slower one with gloomy flute tunes. Masha’s singing is piercing, rich in emotions and powerful. The next song (Odna – „Alone”) is about loneliness, difficulties of life in this rushing world. Perfect balalaika tune embellish the genial song, it’s also one of my favourites from the new album. The 12th track is also an acoustic one, Vo Moiom Sadochke… („In My Garden…”), about a mourning mother, whose son died in battle. The song before the last one is the title-song of the EP, which released early summer, Stenka Na Stenku („Wall on Wall”). An excellent clip was also created for it, which performs the ancient Slavic tradition, which made the Slavic men hardened. It has catchy accordion and flute tunes and fast tempo, a real pogo-song. The ending track is Zimushka or „Winter”. It’s a common song with the leading Russian folk band, Vedan’ Kolod’ and a cover of a Siberian folk song. The sad, slow song tells the tragic life of a couple. The melancholic atmosphere is increased by the gloomy tunes of the bagpipe.
In addition to the songs, I must say some word about the artwork, too. Fitting, beautiful pictures for each and every song were created by their earlier graphic artist, Kris Verwimp (Vintersorg, Månegarm, Thyrfing, etc.).
To sum up, the talented Russian band created a very strong album again, or even, their strongest album ever. It’s full with very good songs, very lovely tunes and beautiful instruments (for me, the constant using of bagpipe and cello is very glad, and of course the using of balalaika). Surely it’ll be difficult to get ahead of this album!
