Az Avven nem véletlenül Szlovénia vezető folk rock/metal zenekara. Az áprilisi BeltineFesten számomra élőben is bizonyítottak, sőt még jobban meggyőztek, mint nagylemezeikkel. De azokra sem lehet semmiféle panasz! A koncertbeszámoló után most második nagylemezük, a 2011 tavaszán megjelent Kastalija lemezt fogom bemutatni.
De előbb pár szó a zenekarról! Nevük a velszi kelta nyelv awen szavából ered, ami „költői ihletet” jelent (a szlovénben nincs w, így helyette két v betűt használnak). A zenekar tagjai majd mindnyájan rendelkeznek egy kelta mitológiából vett becenévvel és egytől egyig magasan képzett, gyerek- és fiatalkoruk óta zenélő profi muzsikusok. Saját stílusukat „rock vzhoda”-nak, „keleti rocknak” nevezik. Lényegében a dallamos folk metal és folk/kelta rock határán mozognak, de a zenéjükben felhasznált népies elemek Európa minden területéről jönnek, nem kizárólag kelták. Dalszövegeik többsége szlovénül van, egy-két angol és ír kelta részt leszámítva, témáik pedig nem annyira a klasszikus folk metal szövegvilágából, hanem inkább a népi romantikából erednek, de azért fantasy, történelem és mitológia is szerepel bennük.
Második lemezük a Kastalija címet kapta, mely a görög Kasztália, a kúttá változtatott nimfa nevéből ered. Aki e kútból iszik, vagy vizének csobogását hallgatja, abban feléledhet a költő. A lemez első dala az ír fuvolajátékkal induló és abszolút kelta hatású Zmaji, mely a sárkányokról szól. Nagyon erős lemezindítás és egyben hatalmas közönségkedvenc! E lemezen egyébként hatalmas szerepe van az itt még vendégzenészkedő, de mára állandó taggá vált Anejnek, aki ír furulyákon és ír fuvolán játszik. A népies érzést növeli a hegedű és a harmonika is, de jelentős szerepe van a billentyűknek is benne. Szintén nagyszerűek az epikus férfikórusok az egész anyagon, e dalban pedig ezt az érzést növeli a rézfúvósok szerepe is. Míg az első dalban az ír fuvola és a harmonika a legkellemesebbek, addig a második Ros-ban iszonyat húzós a basszustéma, a vonósok, a billentyűk és gyönyörű női ének is (e dalra egyébként klip is készült). E csodás női énekkel, vonósokkal (hegedű és cselló), andalító billentyűkkel és emelkedett kórussal megy tovább a Nuala, mely szinte szimfonikus metalba hajlik. A Vvile inkább a melodikus rock vonalán mozog, Anam nagyszerű és erőteljes hangjával és kellemes ír mélyfurulya (low whistle) dallamokkal és pár keményebb, metalosabb gitárriffel. Az Ibo tipikus kelet-közép-európai népi dallam, nagyszerű táncolós, pattogós ritmussal, kontrázással, nekem ez az egyik kedvencem a lemezen. Az angol nyelvű Tarak metalosan folytatja a vonalat, komoly vonóscsapat bevonásával. A hetedik dal, a Hej ti! szintén a keményebb vonalon mozog, ismét erős együtténeklős kórusokkal, néhol hörgésbe átmenő vokálokkal és menetelős, lágy fafúvósszólóval. A java részt lágyabb, dallamosabb sPain igazi spanyolos hangulatú, orientális intróval, latinos trombitadallamokkal és ritmikus tapssal. Az utolsó előtti nóta az L.78, mely gyors, szinte power metalos intróval indul, de aztán visszatalál az átlagos tempóhoz. Ebben a dalban ismét komoly szerepet kap az (egyik gitáros által megszólaltatott) harmonika, a szólóban pedig törzsi dobolást és orientális témát hallhatunk. A lemezt az ír és angol szöveggel és erőteljes, sokszínű vokállal (hörgés, suttogás, tiszta férfiének, férfi-női duett és sámános torokének) ellátott, power metalos Tornach zárja.
A mindössze 10 dalos és 37 perces lemez minden téren sokszínű és erős. Olyan anyag, amely a kifejezetten népies zenéket és a kemény metalt kevésbé kedvelőknél is abszolút betalálhat. A hangzásra szintén nem lehet panasz, ahogy a puritán, de szép lemezborítóra sem. Most áprilisban és májusban pedig a BeltineFest állomásain élőben is bizonyítottak! Mindenkinek csak ajánlani tudom ezt az egyedi és érdekes anyagot és zenekart!

ENGLISH VERSION:
Avven is the lead folk rock/metal band of Slovenia and it’s not an accident. They demonstrated this for me at BeltineFest in April, or they even more convinced me than with their albums. But I have neither cause of complaint of the albums! After the live report, now I’m reviewing their second full-length album, Kastalija, which was released in spring, 2011.
But first of all, brief info about the band! Their name comes from the word awen of the Welsh Celtic language, which means “poetic inspiration” (in Slovene, there’s no w, so they use two v-s instead). Almost all of the members have a nickname from the Celtic mythology and all of them are highly qualified professional musicians, who play instruments since their childhood or youth. Calling their own genre “rock vzhoda”, “rock of the East”, they are on the border-line of melodic folk metal and folk/Celtic rock, but the folkish elements come from all over Europe, not only from the Celtic regions. Most of their lyrics are in Slovene, except a couple of English and Irish Gaelic parts and their topics aren’t so typical folk metal-like, but are rather rooted in the folk romanticism, but also fantasy, history and mythology play some role in them.
Their second album is entitled Kastalija, coming from the name of the Greek Castalia, the nymph who was transformed into a fountain. Who drink from this fountain or just listen to its sound, his/her genius of poetry could be awoken. The first song, started with Irish flute-theme, is the fully Celtic-like Zmaji about dragons. Very strong beginning and big favourite among the fans! By the way, on this album Anej (on the album he was just guest-musician, but now he’s a full-time member) plays a big role with his Irish whistles and flute. The folkish feeling is raised by the violin and accordion, too, but also the keyboards play big role. Also there are great epic atmosphere by the male choirs and in the first song, by the brasses. While in it the Irish flute and the accordion are the most pleasant, in the second Ros the bass-theme, the strings, the keys are awesome and the female vocals are also beautiful (for this song, they also shot a music video). With these wonderful female vocals, strings (violin and cello), charming keyboards and elevated choirs Nuala continues the line, which little wheels about symphonic metal. Vvile is rather a melodic rock track with Anam’s great and powerful vocals and pleasant low whistle tunes and some harder, more metal-like guitar riffs. Ibo is a typical East Central European folk melody, great dancing and cheerful rhythm, one of my favourites on the album. The English Tarak continues the album with more metal, including a bigger strings group. The seventh track, Hej ti! is also a heavier one, again with strong sing-along choirs, vocals which sometimes turn into growls and a marching, soft wood-wind solo. The mostly soft, melodic sPain is a true Spanish-like song with oriental intro, Latin trumpet themes and rhythmic claps. The one before the last track is L.78, beginning with a fast, nearly power metal intro, but then finds the average tempo. Accordion (which is played by one guitarist) plays an important role again and during the solo, we hear tribal drumming and oriental theme. The album is ended by the power metal-like Tornach with Irish and English lyrics and powerful, various vocals (growls, whispers, clean male vocals, male-female duet and shamanistic throat-singing).
The short album with only 10 tracks and 37-minute playtime is various and strong in every way. It’s a material which can be the favourite of those people too, who don’t really like folkish music or hard metal. I can’t complain of the sound or the simple, but nice cover artwork. And this April-May they also showed their skills at BeltineFest gigs! I can only recommend this unique and interesting material and band for everybody!
