Igaz, legutóbbi anyaguk, a 2013. november végén megjelent Heimweh („Honvágy”) viszonylag hamar követte a 2012 februárjában kiadott The Final Journey-t.

A zenekar első német című lemezén minden eddiginél erősebben van jelen a német nyelv, csupán egy angol nyelvű tétellel találkozunk az In the Name of Ancient Gods személyében. A borító elárulja, hogy egyszerűbb, kevésbé színes lemezre számíthatunk, míg az előhang (Symphonia Pagana) erősen sejteti, hogy a klasszikus zene ezúttal a népi vonal fölé kerekedik.

A fekete, puritán borító a legutóbbi anyagoknál blackesebb, nyersebb anyagot takar.

Míg a The Final Journey a csapat egyik legjobban sikerült kiadványa, addig a Heimweh jóval gyengébb, a kettőt egymás mellé rakva pedig utóbbi szinte mélyrepülésnek tűnik számomra.

ENGLISH VERSION:

Black Messiah as one of the best-known and oldest bands of the German pagan scene is not famous about releasing albums frequently. This is why they released only six longplayers in 21 years. But their latest album, Heimweh (“Home-Sickness”) was released at the end of November, 2013 – relatively soon after The Final Journey (out in February, 2012).

You can guess after seeing its title, front cover and listening to the intro what will come on the new album of the “Ruhr Vikings”. On the first album with German title the German language dominates, there’s only one track in English entitled In the Name of Ancient Gods. The front cover tells us that we should expect a simpler, less colourful material while the prologue (Symphonia Pagana) marks that classical music has it on folk music now.

Behind the black, austere cover there’s a more blackened, rawer material than on the latest albums. The sound is so raw and old school that sometimes it’s simply weak in quality – it’s the most apparent in the 8-minute-long ending track, Die Quelle der Weisheit (“The Source of Wisdom”) where cymbals sound like on an early demo. Fortunately the sound of the vocals and symphonic and folk themes are good enough but they should pay more attention to the mixing of guitars and drums. By the way there’re really not so much folkish melodies; only one song is folk metal actually and longer folkish feelings appear only two times in other songs. On the other hand, Wildsau (“Wild Boar”) is a typical pint-waving party song, clearly inspired by German folk music – they also shot a music video for this one. Also it is the most enjoyable track because of the lead role of flute, violin and accordion; the metal instruments play only the background music here.

Unfortunately we experience decay not only in sound – the melodies are neither as various as Black Messiah’s ones are (were?) usually. Mid-tempo governs the album with some faster refrains and interludes. The intro and title-track are softer, acoustic pieces while Edmund von Ostanglien (“Edmund of East Anglia”) represents the world of slower, epic pagan metal through the story of Saint Edmund, the Anglo-Saxon martyr king. The strength of these tracks – along with the lack/lower amount of the raw metal instrumentation – is Zagan’s clear vocals. The band-leader and frontman is a talented singer and musician but he is not so strong in growls which are more common in their music.

Although almost two years passed between the new and the latest albums, I feel that they should wait a bit more before releasing the new material. While The Final Journey is one of the group’s best records, Heimweh is much weaker – and if we compare these two LPs to each other, the latter seems to be a debasement in my view.
