A „Ruhr-vidéki vikingek” zenekara utoljára három éve jelentkezett lemezzel, az akkori First War of the World egy konceptlemez volt az északi istencsaládok, az ázok és vánok harcáról. Furcsa módon a csapat bár régóta a színtér meghatározó bandája, nem került be a folk/pogány vonal divatos zenekarai közé. Pedig megérdemelnék, régebbi munkásságuk is profi és a most februárban megjelenő The Final Journey-re sem lehet panasz.

Az új korong követi az eddigi vonalat: változatos tempó, néhol lágyabb, néhol keményebb részek, hősi kórusok, klasszikus/komolyzenei hegedűtémák, viking, power, black és folk metal riffek, epikus és pogány metalos ének illetve hörgés jellemzik az albumot. Sőt a legutóbbi albumról megmaradt a koncepciós íz is, hiszen a The Final Journey második fele, pontosabban utolsó négy dala a The Naglfar Saga címre hallgató sztori része.

A lemezt a Windloni nyitja, szerintem megfelelően erős kezdés, erre a dalra klipet is forgatott a csapat. A német nyelvű csatadal epikus, hősi küzdelem érzését kelti. A harmadik szám a To Become A Man, sötétebb emelkedett pogány metalos hangulatával és angol szövegével. Az Into The Unfathomed Tower (A Tribute To Candlemass) is ezt a mélyebb, sötétebb hangulatot viszi tovább. Ez a dal azonban instrumentális, a domináló hegedű miatt inkább a szimfonikus metalhoz áll közelebb, a hegedűjáték nem népi, hanem komolyzenei (a hegedűs-énekes klasszikus képzettségéből fakadóan). A Feld Der Ehre ismét német nyelvű, szövege ugyan harcias, folk/viking metalos, de gyakorlatilag zeneileg ez is szimfonikus pogány metal nagyszerű fennkölt atmoszférával, bár ez a rekedtes tiszta ének számomra kevésbé nyerő. Az első blokk zárótétele a Lindisfarne visszatér a viking metalos vonalra, ahogy neve is mutatja, a vikingek első ismert támadásáról szól a dal (Kr.u. 793). A lemez második blokkja a Prologue – The Final Journey intróval kezdődik, mely elmeséli, hogy az elhunyt gonosz emberek az északi mitológia szerint Helheimba, Hel istennő birodalmába jutnak. Zeneileg egyébként lágy, kellemes tétel. A második/nyolcadik tétel a Mother Hel, mely inkább a zenekar viking/pogány oldalát mutatja meg, bár tiszta énekből sincs hiány a dalban. Az utolsó előtti dal az On Board, ami már ténylegesen a saga névadójáról, a mitikus Naglfar hajóról szól, mely a holtak körmeiből épült és a Ragnarök idején holtak hordáit fogja az istenek elleni harcba szállítani. A témának megfelelően gonosz, hátborzongató atmoszférája van a dalnak. A lemezt a Sailing Into Eternity zárja, melyben visszatér az epikus-szimfonikus fíling is, de egyben a pogány vonal is megmarad és kapunk egy jó kis speed/heavy metalos gitárszólót is mindezek mellé. A zenekar nagyszerűen ötvözi ezeket az egymástól eléggé eltérő stílusokat.

Az album borítója is látványosra sikeredett, a hangzás minőségével sincs gond, egyedül a rekedtes ének nem erőssége a lemeznek meglátásom szerint.

ENGLISH VERSION:

The band of the “Ruhr Vikings” released an album three years ago last time. That album, First War of the World was a concept material about the fight between the Norse god-dynasties, the Aesir and Vanir. It’s a bit strange that although this band is remarkable in the scene, they don’t belong to the most popular bands of the folk/pagan underground. They should really deserve it, their earlier works are also professional ones and I can neither complain of the upcoming The Final Journey (out in February).

The new cd follows the previous style: variable tempo, both softer and harder parts, heroic choirs, classical violin themes, viking, power, black and folk metal riffs, epic and pagan metaller vocals and growls are on the album. Even the concept taste is left over from the last album, because the second half – actually the last four tracks – of The Final Journey are parts of the story titled The Naglfar Saga.

Windloni opens the album which is a strong opener in my opinion; the band also shot a music video for this song. This German battle song makes you feel an epic, heroic fight. The second track, Der Ring Mit Dem Kreuz uses beautiful violin theme and classical influences. By the way this is the longest song on the album, the slower, broken parts and the fast, epic viking themes alternate very well. To Become A Man is the third song with its darker, elevated pagan metal atmosphere and English lyrics. Into The Unfathomed Tower (A Tribute To Candlemass) passes on this deeper, darker way. But this track is instrumental, and because of the leading violin, it is closer to symphonic metal, the violin play isn’t folkish, but classical (it comes from the classical training of the violinist-vocalist). Feld Der Ehre is in German again, its lyrics are about battle, so folk/viking metal related, but musically it’s rather a symphonic pagan metal track with great hymnic atmosphere, although these harsh clean vocals aren’t my favourite one. The ending song of this first block is Lindisfarne, which returns to the viking metal line, as its title says it’s about the first known attack of the Vikings (793 AD). The second block of the album begins with the intro Prologue – The Final Journey which tells that dead malicious people go to Helheim, the realm of goddess Hel according to the Norse mythology. Musically it’s a soft, pleasant piece. The second/eighth track is Mother Hel, which rather shows the viking/pagan side of the band, but we get enough clean vocals, too. The song before the last one is On Board, which is truly about the mythic boat, Naglfar, the eponym of the saga. Naglfar is made of the nails of dead and it will carry the hordes of dead against the gods during Ragnarök. According to its topic, the song has an evil, creepy atmosphere. Sailing Into Eternity is the last track, the epic-symphonic feeling returns, but also the pagan way remains and beside these, we get a good speed/heavy metal guitar solo, too. The band combines these very different genres greatly.

The cover artwork is also very nice and the sound quality is perfect, in my view only the harsh singing isn’t the strength of the album.
