A német Brainstorm új lemeze, a Memorial Roots már az AFM kiadónál jelent meg, így várható volt, hogy a fiúk régi kiadója, a Metal Blade is aktivizálja magát és kidob egy best of cd-t a banda legjobb dalaival. Nos, nem kellett most sem csalódni az üzleti mechanizmusokban, a Metal Blade tényleg kiadott egy válogatást, méghozzá dupla lemezen, szóval több, mint két és fél órányi gazdagodik az, aki beruház erre a gyűjteményre. Persze, akiknek ott sorakozik az összes Brainstorm kiadvány a polcon, azok maximum akkor kaphatnak újdonságot a pénzükért, ha a sorlemezekből nincsen limitált vagy japán kiadásuk.
A két lemez nagyjából időben visszafele haladva szemezget a banda legjobb dalaiból, szigorúan az Andy B. Franck-es időből, az Unholyról és a Hungryról is csak egy-egy élő felvétel szerepel, azok is Andy tolmácsolásában.
A Downburst és a Liquid Monster 5-5 dallal szerepelnek az első cd-n, amin még a Soul Temptationről az übersláger Highs Without Lows, a The Leading és a Doorway To Survive mellett a teljes Trinity Of Lust trilógia is helyet kapott.
A második cd-n 4-4 dal van a Metus Mortis és az Ambiguity lemezekről, de ezek után bújik meg az igazi csemege: bónusz dalok a Donwburst japán kiadásáról, A Liquid Monster szintén japán kiadásáról, A Metus Mortis digipack változatáról és talán a legnagyobb csemege: A Before The Dawn Priest klasszikus Brainstormos átgondolása, amit anno az All Those Words maxin lehetett hallani. Az élő felvételek előtt még a vicces, rock’n’rollosra vett Is This The Way To Amarillo kapott helyet.
A már említett élő felvételek pedig a Voices, a 2005-ös budapesti koncertről és a Liar’s Edge a Summer Breeze fesztiválró, mindkettő jól mutatja a banda lehengerlő élő teljesítményét.
Nem mondanám, hogy hiánypótló kiadvány a Just Highs No Lows, de hosszabb-rövidebb ideig bárkit leköthet, a banda rajongóitól egészen azokig, akik csak most ismerkednek ezzel a zseniális power metal brigáddal, hiszen ezekkel a dalokkal nem lehet tévedni, még ha néhány nagy kedvenc szükségképpen ki is kellett, hogy maradjon.

The german Brainstorm’s new album came out via AFM Records, so it was quite predictable, that their former label, Metal Blade will release something and they didn’t disappoint. They released a double best of CD, so everybody who will buy Just Highs No Lows will get more than 2 and a half hours of quality Brainstorm music. Obviously those who have all Brainstorm releases can get something new for their money if they don’t have japanese or limited digipack edition of the albums.
The two discs introduce the band’s career in reverse order, strictly from the Andy B. Franck era, there’s only one song apiece from Hungry and Unholy, and even those are sang by Andy.
There are 5 songs from Downburst and Liquid Monster on the first disc, followed by 4 songs from Soul Temptation including the magical Trinity Of Lust.
The second disc contains 4 songs from Metus Mortis and Ambiguity, but after them you can find the most interesting part of the disc set: songs from limited and japanese releases, the most interesting in my opinion is the cover of Judas Priest’s classic Before The Dawn. You can also find that on the All Those Words single. Directly before the live recordings you can hear an other cover: Is This The Way To Amarillo? I love it since I first heard on the limited edition of Soul Temptation.
The aforementioned live recordings are Voices from a 2005 gig in Budapest and Liar’s Edge from the Summer Breeze festival, both display power of the band’s overwhelming live performances.
I would not say that Just Highs No Lows is a must have or fills any particular need, but for a bit it can entertain everyone from the hardcore fans of the band to those who just got off with the this incredible power metal unit, because you can’t miss with these songs, although some great ones had to be left from the compilation.
