Az amerikai Cage 5. albuma jelenik meg hamarosan Science Of Annihilation címmel. A kiadó Power metal műfajba sorolja őket, de ez azért elég szerteágazó zenei világot takarhat, és takar is. Legyen első körben gyanús, hogy ez egy amerikai banda :). A zenekar 1999-es indulása óta sok mindent megért, fesztiválokon járt, és a világ legnagyobbjai előtt volt nyitóbanda, mint Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Dio, Dokken.
Ezen nevek hallatán valamiféle klasszikus, meglepetésektől mentes anyagot várhatnánk, de a Cage új műsora nem ilyen. Egyrészt gyanús lehet a műfajhoz képest késői kezdetek, de a kiadó is utal rá, amikor a „classic metal for the new age” és a „modern day power metal” jelzőkkel illeti a zenekart, illetve annak most megjelenő új lemezét.
Az anyag meglehetősen sokban különbözik az európai powermetal zenétől. Egyrészt ha ez a műfaj a bevitt erőtől „power” akkor eddig minden amit ebben a műfajban kiadtak az popzene. A legendás dobos Norm „The Legend” Leggio (ex-Psychotic Waltz) gyakorlatilag szétdobolja a lemezt. Nem tud lassítani, ettől kicsit „ideges”, kapkodós az anyag. A gitártémák nem fülbemászóak, jó értelemben vett speedmetálos halál pontos tekerések a kíséretekben, és követhetetlen, érthetetlen gitárszólók, kicsit „koszosnak” is tűnik sok helyen az egész. Ritka nagy erőkkel adják elő a hangszeres kíséretet minden dalhoz, amit egy ordibálós ének tesz még inkább amerikaivá és moderné. Ez az erődemonstráció néha – ha nem is hörgős – de mindenképpen a haragos-metálzene nyomait viseli, pár részlet kifejezetten thrash/black jegyeket visel de végülis nem az. Kevés a megjegyezhető húzós dallam, a verzékben szinte soha, de a refrénekben is csak nagyritkán lassítanak. A 11-es dal (Spectre Of War) majdnem líraira sikeredett, itt elgondolkoztam, az énekes tud-e énekelni is, de úgy döntöttem (az egyébként lírai elemeket is felvonultató eleje alapján) hogy nem tud, később meg megint ordibál. Tulajdonképp ez áll neki jól. Ennek a dalnak szinte egyenes folytatása a 12-es címadó dal (Science Of Annihilation), ami mindenképpen érdekes összefűzése a két különböző stílusú dalnak, de így lényegében nincs lassítás a lemezen, mert a Spectre Of War lassítását a címadó dal tempója hamar feledteti.
Mindamellett jó riffek, remek keverés, szépen kivehető hangzás jellemezi a lemezt. Nem szól egyformán minden dal, de talán a második és az ötödik dal kivételével azt lehet mondani, hogy a keverés tökéletesen visszaadja a modern értelemben vett power metal elemeit, a modernség minden velejárójával, például azzal is, hogy nem tökölnek az idők végtelenségéig egy-egy dal kialakításával, megírásával, és felvételével. A ritmusközpontú szemlélet mellett nem csak „normális” ének nem fér meg, hanem a gitárok sem alkotnak emlékezeteset. A kíséretek nem folynak össze, de végülis nem hallani feledhetetlen ötletet benne. A gitárszólók pedig kidolgozatlan vagy éppen félkész improvizációk, kicsit a Metallica modernizációs törekvései jutnak róla eszembe. Erődemonstráció ez nem „zene”, legalábbis nem abban az értelemben ahogy betesz az ember egy power metal albumot mert már unja a hörgést :).
Aki ezt a lemezt úgy végig tudja hallgatni, hogy csak a nyers erőre és a sebességre kíváncsi, a sebességre, annak tetszeni fog az anyag. Aki szeretne hallgatható modern lemezt, amiben a hörgés helyett a sokkal tolerálhatóbb és érthetőbb ordibálás fejezi ki az elfojtott erőt, amiben nincsenek sablonos dallamok, megjegyezhető vagy emlékezetes gitárszólók, akit nem zavar hogy 13 majdnem egyforma tempójú és hangulatvilágú, de pár esetben véletlenül (vagy direkt) másképp szóló dalt hall, azoknak ez a lemez messze 10 pontos. Aki nem a részletes kidolgozottságra, csak a nyers zenélésre, az ötletre kíváncsi, az mindenképpen hallgassa meg. Aki hagyományos power metalra vágyik, főleg ha európaira, annak viszont nem fog tetszeni. Én ez utóbbit többre értékelem, mint a modern próbálkozásokat, de még így is 8 pontot adok erre az anyagra, mert jó, friss, jó értelemben kidolgozatlan, nyers, és amire kitalálták arra tökéletes. Bon Jovinak sosem lesz előzenekara a Cage 🙂

ENGLISH VERSION:
The fifth album of American is going to be released soon with the title Science of Annihilation. Their label puts them into the category of Power metal, but I think this genre may cover a wider musical range and indeed, it coves. First, let that be suspicious that it’s an American band :). A lot of things happened to the band since their 1999 formation, they appeared at fests, and also opened for bands like Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Dio, Dokken.
Based on the mentioned names, we could have expected a somewhat classic, surprise-free material but the new stuff of Cage is not like this. First off, their later formation (compared to the genre) is suspicious, and their label also refers to that with descriptions like „classic metal for the new age” and „modern day power metal”, both for the album and the band.
The stuff differs a lot from European Power metal. On one hand, if the genre got its name from the power embedded in it, then all releases that got release as power metal was pop music. Legendary drummer Norm „The Legend” Leggio (ex-Psychotic Waltz) is drumming like hell on the record. Actually, he could not play slower so the stuff has become a bit „nervous”. The guitar themes aren’t catchy there are complicated and inexplicable solos and the whole thing sounds at times a bit „dirty”. The instrumental paying in all tracks is extremely powerful, and the shouting vocals make the tracks American and modern. This power show-off – even if not grunting – bears the marks of angry metal by all means, soma parts are even reminiscent of black/thrash metal but the music is not of that genre. There are few memorable, catchy melodies, they never slow down in the verses, only some choruses are slower. Track No. 11 (Spectre of War) is almost lyrical, here I was thinking whether the singer can sing but I decided (based on the lyrical elements of the song) he cannot, and later he is shouting again. Actually, this suits him well. Track No. 12 (the title track) is almost a direct continuation of the previous one which is by all means an interesting blend of the two directions but, this way, there is no really slowing on the record since the title track makes the slower tempo of Spectre of War forget.
Besides, the riffs are good, the production is excellent and the album sounds well. Not all tracks sound the same but, maybe with the exception of tracks No. 2 and 5, the sound perfectly gives a modern power metal feeling, with all its elements, including the fact that they do not waste the time with the writing and recording of the songs too much time. Beside the rhythm-centered attitude, it’s not just the „normal” vocals that do not suit the whole but the guitars do not bring memorable themes either. The accompanying parts do not sound entirely alike, but there aren’t too memorable ideas after all. And the guitar solos sound as if they were unfinished or improvised, a bit like in newer Metallica striking towards modernism. It’s a power show-off, and not music, at least not in the sense when you put on a power metal record because you’ve enough of grunting :).
Who can listen to this album solely focusing on raw force and speed, will like it. And those will also have a 10 point record who’d like to have a listenable modern album in which, instead of grunting, there’s more tolerable and clearer shouting that express the power held back, and in which there are no stereotyped melodies, catchy and memorable guitar solos. And if they are not disturbed by the fact that they get 13 tracks of almost the same tempo and feeling, but at times the sound by chance (or intentionally) is different in certain tracks. Those who are not interested in a carefully worked out stuff but only interested in raw playing and ideas, check this out.
However, those into ordinary power metal (especially European), will be disappointed. I value this latter higher than modern efforts, but I rate this material with an 8 because it’s good, fresh, unpolished in a positive sense, raw, and in its own field, it’s perfect. They will never open for Bon Jovi though :).
