A Chthonic (avagy 閃靈 – Sán Ling) egy viszonylag régi tajvani zenekar. 1995-ös alakulásukkor még egyértelműen a norvég és skandináv black metal hatása dominált zenéjükben és külsőségeikben. Aztán az idők folyamán egyre inkább elmentek szimfonikus, melodikus és orientális/törzsi folkos irányba. Nemzeti történelmük, mitológiájuk és taoista filozófia vált meghatározó a szövegvilágban és így a hullafestés/corpsepaint is átalakult a taoista mitológiából magyarázható „szellemfestéssé”. Már elejétől kezdve fontosak voltak a kínai illetve tajvani nyelvű szövegek, de az angol is egyre több teret nyert, utóbbi lemezeiket pedig párhuzamosan, tajvaniul és angolul is kiadták (persze a koncepcióból fakadóan távol-keleti nyelveken több részlet hallható az angol verziókon is). A szimfonikus-epikus hatást a szintik és zongora szolgáltatják, míg a népzenéről népi ének, törzsi dobolás, hegedű és több helyi hangszer (elsősorban a vonós erhu, a citeraszerű guzseng, a pgaku furulya és egyéb fúvósok) gondoskodnak. Legutóbbi három lemezük (Seediq Bale – 2005; Mirror of Retribution – 2009; Takasago Army – 2011) Tajvan szigetének modern kori, XX. század eleji történelmét dolgozta fel, utóbbi kettő már a finn Spinefarm Records gondozásában nemzetközi terjesztésre került, ez alapozta meg a banda sikerét is (én is így ismertem meg őket).
E koncepció mentén halad tovább friss, május végén/június elején megjelenő anyaguk, a Bú-Tik (武徳) is. Zeneileg sem újítottak be a távol-keleti szigetlakók komolyabban, persze ami jó, azon nem szabad sokat változtatni! Az viszont tény, hogy a black metalból minden egyes lemezzel egyre inkább modern metal lesz, mára már csak Freddy Lim zenekarvezető hörgései maradtak meg többé-kevésbé blackesnek. Ennek megfelelően nagy szerepet játszanak a göteborgi jellegű riffek és a folkos és emelkedett dallamok a tíz erős dalt tartalmazó korongon. Ettől rendkívül egyedi stílusú és erőteljes hangzású a Chthonic. Az olyan témák, mint a Supreme Pain for the Tyrant, a Rage of my Sword, vagy a Defenders of Bú-Tik Palace önkéntelenül is headbangelésre késztetik az embert, míg az intró, az outró (Arising Armament és Undying Rearmament) és a Next Republic bevezetőjének színtiszta népzenéje egzotikus keleti világba varázsolja a hallgatót. A legjobb részek azonban azok, ahol egyszerre zúznak a gitárok és játszik andalító melódiát az erhu – előnye a csapatnak, hogy nagyon jól egyensúlyban tudják tartani a metalos és a folkos szekciót, erre kevés banda képes ilyen szinten.
Minden rendben van a Bú-Tikkal: a dalok erősek, a hang minőségéről a svéd Sweetspot stúdió ismét gondoskodott, nekem egyedül a posztmodern borító nem jön be igazán. Nincs is értelme szaporítani a szót, hisz aki eddig is ismerte és szerette a bandát, az nem fog csalódni a hamarosan megjelenő lemezben sem. Aki e lemezzel fogja megismerni az őstisztelő tajvani hordát, az vélhetően meg fogja szeretni őket és nem fog csalódni az előző matériákban sem. Azaz ismét hozták a szokásos színvonalat – én már csak azt várom, hogy végre élőben láthassam őket!

ENGLISH VERSION:
Chthonic (or 閃靈 – Shǎn Ling) is a relatively old Taiwanese band. Around their foundation in 1995 the influence of Norwegian and Scandinavian black metal was definitely strong on their music and appearance. Then as time was passing they moved more and more towards a symphonic, melodic and oriental/tribal folkish direction. Their national history, mythology and the Taoist philosophy became determinant in their lyrics and so the corpsepaint became the “ghostpaint” of the Taoist myths. The Chinese and Taiwanese lyrics are important from the beginning, but more and more parts were written in English and their latest albums were released in Taiwanese and in English in parallel (but of course parts in Far Eastern languages remained on both versions). The symphonic-epic atmosphere is made by synthesizers and piano, while the ethnic sound comes from folk singing, tribal drumming, violin and many local instruments (mostly by the stringed erhu, the zither-like guzheng, the pgaku flute and other woodwinds). Their latest three albums (Seediq Bale – 2005; Mirror of Retribution – 2009; Takasago Army – 2011) covered the modern, early 20th century history of the island of Taiwan. The last two LPs were released internationally by the Finnish Spinefarm Records which established the band’s fame (I also came to know them because of this deal).
Their forthcoming brand new album, Bú-Tik (武徳) – which will be released late May/early June – continues this conception. The Far Eastern islanders neither do many musical innovations on it, but of course if something is good, you shouldn’t change it radically! Anyway it’s a fact that their black metal is rather metamorphosed into modern metal; nowadays only the screams of the band-leader Freddy Lim remained more or less blackish. According to this, the Gothenburg-like riffs and the folkish and elevated melodies play main roles in the ten tracks of the new longplayer. These make Chthonic so unique in the genre and so strong in sound. Such themes as in Supreme Pain for the Tyrant, Rage of my Sword or Defenders of Bú-Tik Palace make us headbang automatically, while the pure ethnic music of the intro and the outro (Arising Armament and Undying Rearmament) and at the beginning of Next Republic summon the exotic oriental world. But the best parts are when the guitars are grinding in parallel with the charming tunes of erhu – the group’s great advantage is that they can absolutely find the balance between the metal and the folk section; only a few bands can do this in such a high level.
Everything is okay with Bú-Tik; the songs are strong, the Swedish Sweetspot Studio did a good work with the sound quality again – the only one thing I don’t really like is the post-modern cover artwork. But there’s no need to waste more words in the review. Who knew and liked the band before, he won’t be disappointed by this upcoming album. Who will get to know the ancestor-worshipper Taiwanese horde with this album, he will probably like them and neither be disappointed by the earlier materials. So Chthonic is up to their standard again – I’m only looking forward to finally see them on a concert!
