A Colosseum egy 2006-ban született Finn csapat, ami a Yearninges Juhani Palomäki önnön magával való elégedetlenségének gyermeke. 2 album és egy demo (ami ingyenesen hozzáférhető a hómpédzsükön) van a hátuk mögött. Az extremely dark and heavy koncepció már a kezdeti időktől egész korrekten megvalósult, s a második teljes albumra már egészen kiforrott zenei élmény az, amit kapunk. A műfaj Funeral Doom. A kicsit már témában jártasabb emberek tudhatják, hogy ez az a műfaj, ahol nem lehet igazán egyedit alkotni. Egyedül kivétel ez alól talán a Tyranny nevű formáció, akik sajnos kevésbé népszerűek, mint ezek a mai „trendy” funeral doomok.
A Chapter II: Namquam album első dallama semmit sem tesz kétségessé az anyag színvonalát illetően. Rögtön felfedezhetők a tipikus jellemzők. Talán egy funeral anyaghoz képest ez a kezdés még gyors is, nem nagy gond, de összhatás tekintetében kicsit kiábrándító. A lassan hömpölygő keserű melódiák ettől függetlenül rögtön elragadnak. A melankolikus vergődés átragad a hallgatóra, aki tudja értékelni, „élvezni” ezt a fajta megnyilvánulását a művészetnek. A Funeral doom műfajilag mindig is önmagában paradoxon volt, hisz monumentális, teátrális formában közvetít efféle szélsőségeken negatív dolgokat. A másik visszatérő motívum ebben a műfajban mozgó bandáknál, hogy megpróbálják a Lovecraft féle stílust, valahogy bármi áron belevonni az egészbe.
Nos, az első, mondhatni felvezető szám, egy jó példa a tipikusan rossz számokra. Maga a zene jól össze van rakva, de egyszerűen az anyag egészéhez képest gyenge. Vontatott ötlettelen témák jellemzik, s a szinti sem kerül még előtérbe. A második szerzemény, név szerint Towards The Infinite már egy kellemesebb darab. A szám úgy a 2/3-tól egyszerűen gyönyörű. Itt jelen van mindaz, amiért az egész műfaj létezése indokolt. Az utána következő Demons Swarm By My Side is különlegesnek számít, merthogy háromnegyedbe íródott, ami nem igazán megszokott. Az 5. percében következik egy akusztikus leállás, ami ugyancsak izgalmassá teszi az egészet.
A The River című dal egy rövid kis spanyolosnak mondható bevezetővel kezd, s utána rögtön belevág szintén gyönyörű heroikus, kezdőtémájába. Itt azonban már vannak kiábrándító, kevésbé hallgatóbarát részek, hanyagolható tétel. Az ezt követő Nacrosis egy kicsit progresszívebb utat jár be, szerencsére nincs eltúlozva semmi, remek szám. Az utána következő teljes értékű dal egy gyenge 10 perces töltelék, amit igazán kár volt feltenni. Ezután még van egy csörömpölős Outro, aminek megint nem értem a létének értelmét.
A gitárok és a szinti nagyon jól kiegészítik egymást, néhol előtérbe kerül a basszgitár elkalandozása is, ami mindenképp pluszpontot érdemel. Egyedül a vokállal van bajom. Nekem ez valahogy túl érces. Nem elég testes, nem igazán illik bele. Ettől függetlenül a hangzás remek lett. Talán túl jó. Talán ezen a CD-n már minden túl jó ahhoz képest, amit képviselni hivatott. Remek hangzást, jól megírt számokat kapunk, de tényleg erre van szüksége a Funeral doom fogyasztó társadalomnak? Ez valahogy már egy újabb ellentét. Nem rossz, de valahogy már nem az, amire vágyom mikor ilyesféle zenét akarok hallgatni. Konceptanyag, és valahogy az egész varázsából ez visszavesz egy picit.

Colosseum was born in 2006 as a child of Yearning’s Juhani Palomäki’s dissatisfaction with himself. They have released two albums and a demo (which is also available on their website for free). Their main concept from the beginning is an extremely dark and heavy one and on this second album we get a quite mature work. The style is funeral doom. Those a bit well-versed in the genre could know that this is the very genre where it’s not possible to create something unique. The only exception from this may be tyranny who are unfortunately, a bit less known than all those „trendy” funeral doom acts.
The first melody of Chapter II: Namquam leaves no doubt about the quality of the album. Here we can find all the typical marks of the genre. Maybe this opening is a bit fat for a funeral stuff. No problem with it though but regarding the overall effect it’s a bit disappointing. In spite of this, the slowly flowing, bitter melodies carry the listener in no time. You can feel, and even „enjoy” the melancholic agony if you’re receptive to the style. Stylistically, funeral doom has always been a paradox since it transmits extremely negative things in a monumental and theatrical form. The other recurring motive in this genre is the use of Lovecraftian things by any means.
Well, the first, introductory track it’s a fine example of a bad song. The music itself is well-composed but simply, compared to the whole material, it’s weak. Slow and unimaginative themes follow each other and the synth has also less role. Towards The Infinite is a more pleasant piece. The last third of the rack is simply beautiful. Here’s everything that justifies the existence of the genre. The following Demons Swarm By My Side is also a special one since it’s composed in 3/4 which is not that common. At the fifth minute there’s an acoustic break that also make the song exciting.
The River starts with a short, a bit Spanish-like theme after which comes an also beautiful heroic theme. There are some disappointing parts here, it’s a track that can be skipped. Nacrosis is a bit more progressive, and, unfortunately, the guys did not take that to extremes, it’s an excellent tune. The next full song a weak 10 minute-long filler which was a pity to include.
Then there’s a noisy Outro the presence of which I do not understand.
The guitars and the synth complement each other very well and here and there the bass gets
also in the foreground and this is good. I only have problems with the vocals. To me it’s too sonorous. it could be a bit more bulky, and I don’t think it fits the music. In spite of this, the sound is god. Maybe even too good. Maybe on this CD everything is a bit better than it should be. Okay, we get an excellent production, well-composed songs but does the funeral doom consuming society really need this? It’s somehow another paradox. It’s not bad but it’s not that I’m longing for if I’d like to listen to this kind of music. It’s a oncept material and it ruins the magic a bit.
