A Sidman a banda negyedik lemeze.

Lendületes, húzós, kicsit elvont nóta brutál bőgőhangzással a nyitó make up your mind. Mintha körbejátszódna a dolog…
Ragadós hard rock/glam vokalizálással kezd a calm down, mely a bluesérzés mellett country fílinget is felmutat. Igazi sláger a refrénbeli dallamok, vokálok miatt. Torzított basszusra épül a vontatott, már-már stoner-es cold winds whistle, melynek úúúzós vokálja kissé stílusidegen a dalban, mégsem lóg ki. A rock hőskorát idéző, de korszerűen megszólaló dal a cruel world so beautiful. Fontos szerepet kapnak benne a ritmusok, a tamjáték és a dal végén az orgona is. Benjo és ének vezeti be a lassú, úszós gitárjátékot hozó, alteres, new wave-es hangulatú black night-ot. Majdnem minden téren (tempó, ének hangvétel, hangulat) az előzőhöz hasonló nóta a someday i’ll burn, érdekes, hogy bennem a The Doorst idézi meg az orgonaszóló. Shadows/Animals fílingű retrock darab a the patter of his horse jó kis fúvósokkal, vicces hegedűbetéttel. Igazi party nóta. Jófajta pulzáló opusz a down there by the river. A refrén együtténeklésre késztet. Ez jó.

Húzósabb refrénű, de alapvetően hangulatos, szellős, basszus alapú bluesrock szerzemény a hold on. Igazi blueskövület témára alapoz a pride and cowardice, melyben újra benjo színez, de van benne vízcsobogás is. A refrénről a 90-es évek közepi, elvontabb Enuff Z’ Nuff jutott eszembe. Az anyagot a the choir of the weak című ballada zárja, melyben csak gitárok és ének kapott szerepet.

ENGLISH VERSION:

Crazy name, dorky booklet and a music that seems calm at first. This was my first opinion about this german band that calls it’s music blues core. They say about themselves that their music is like mixing Nick Cave with Audioslave’s groove or that it sounds like when a dirty, alternative sound meets with blues and some ZZTop influence. Interesting combinations.

But for sure they use good singing, hard slide guitar riffing, rocking rhytm section and stirring stage performance. At the last seven years they shown their unique sound on three LPs and more than a hundred gigs in Germany and Europe. On some photos they look like Blues Brothers. I don’t think it’s an accident…

Sidman is the band’s fourth full length release but for me it’s the first. I don’t know anything about their other albums but this one is perfect for a first listen. In my opinion this music is the mix of ’70s rock, blues, country and classic r’n’r flawoured with alternative vocals and feelings. Now take a look at the songs.

The first one called Make Up Your Mind is a dashing, hard, a bit alternative song with brutal bass sound. It starts with a freaky guitar squeaking and after a few listens I realized that it sounds like a part of the last song of the album. Like a circle… Loyal to it’s name (Damned to Boogie) the next one begins with rockabilly piano and continues in the same manner but in a more rough way. This two song is a perfect open for the album but the third one (Dialog of Drunk) is really close to them. It sounds like a real blues song with it’s organs and others.

Calm Down starts with a catchy hard rock/glam singing with blues and country feeling. It’s a real hit because of the chorus’ melodies and vocals. The next one based on distorted bass called Cold Whistle is nearly a stoner song and it has a really rocking vocal which is a bit strange in this tune but in the same time it perfectly fits in. Cruel World so Beautiful reminds me of rock music’s golden age. The main thing in it is the rhytms, the tams and the organ at the end of the song. Benjo and singing opens up the slow, new wave like song Black Night and the next one called Someday I’ll Burn is similar to it in many things. It’s organ solos reminds me of The Doors. The Patter of this Horse is a Shadows/Animals like retrock tune with nice wind instruments and funny violin sound. A real party song. The tenth song called Down by the River is a good opus with every elements of the album like blues, alter and some rock. The chorus in this song makes it’s listener to sing along. It’s nice.

Hold On is a bass based bluesrock song with cool chorus. The next song’s (Pride and Cowardice) foundation is a prehistoric blues theme flawored with water babble and benjo again. The chorus of this song is reminescent of 1990’s Enuff Z’ Nuff. The last song on the disc is The Choir of the Weak. It is a ballad that contains only guitars and singing. The refrain reminds me of something but I can’t recall what it is.

I don’t think blues core is the perfect expression but it sounds good for sure. What I say is that this music is rock flawored with a lot of blues, country and alternative elements but nothing depends on style. Most of the songs are good and in spate of that I will not listen to them too much a live gig would be nice to watch and listen to.
