As the Path Unfolds…” névre kereszteltek.

A felvezető után, a „The Crown of Treason”, rögtön jó benyomást kelt, főleg a dal közepén megbúvó népzenei megoldásokkal, hegedű, dorong minden, ami kell.

As the Path Unfolds…” lemezére.

ENGLISH VERSION:

Finnish Crimfall, hailing from the town of Uusimaa, was formed in 2007. The core of the band consists of three guys: Jakke Viitala (guitar, programing) and two vocalists Mikko Häkkinen and Helena Haaparanta. During gigs and in the studio they’re supported by session musicians. Their debut demo titled „Burning Winds” came out in 2008 followed by their first full-length „As the Path Unfolds…” thanks to Napalm Records. Their music anyway is folkish metal music that”s quite popular these days.
The influence of several bands can be found on the record but at a debut album one tends to be a bit less strict with that. Even so when result is this pleasant. To be more specific, the influence of Moonsorrow, Nightwish and Turisas can be felt, and, of course, the soundtrack-like monumental parts are here too, adding some folk instruments to the whole. The result, as said, is quite pleasant, and is free of unusual ideas but these days we are used to that.

After the introduction, „The Crown of Treason” is already a good one, mainly due to the folk parts with violin, mouth harp and all in the middle of the track. And they add some battle fury to it too. I like even better „Wildfire Season” due to its good introductory part and tighter tempo. Of course this song also has some mysterious soundtrack part, and in the second part the already mentioned similarity to Moonsorrow can be heard.
Then, in „Where Waning Winds Lead”, Nightwish comes into the picture, the chorus of the track could also be featured on any Nightwish record. In spite of that, this is an excellent composition. „Ascension Pyre” is interesting due to some oriental touch to it. The vocals alternate almost in every song, having a not too operatic female and appropriately raw male vocalist in the band. With this the balance between the two types of vocals is good, which isn”t a novelty but at least adds something to the varied nature of the music.

Coming back to the tracks, „Non Serviam” must also be mentioned with its bombastic instrumentation, but „Hundred Shores Distant” is also pleasant. After the 47 minutes of the material one can feel satisfied, and can feel the urge to push „play” again, and that is a good thing at a debut album. And I could also add that the stuff was recorded at the famous Finnvox Studio and the nice cover art was made by Kris Wervimp. To me, a bit more guitar could have been good but it”s really a personal observation of mine. However, fans of the mentioned bands, and people who like bombastic, folkish and not overcomplicated music, with several excellent tunes, can invest on Crimfall”s „As the Path Unfolds…” with no hesitation.
