Az Alexander Hilzensauer (basszusgitár), Günter Maier (gitár, szintetizátor), Peter „Beda” Bachmayer (dob), Walter Stuefer (ének) alkotta osztrák quartett tavaly alakult meg, és ez a debütalbumuk, ha nem is sikerült a legjobbra, azért talán reménykedhetünk.

Az Evil Design egy alap metal induló, ami ugyan sem hangzását, sem összjátékát tekintve nem szól rosszul, de magához a műfajhoz semmi újat nem tesz, és így számomra sokat nem is ad. A ’80-as, ’90-es években, és azóta is sok hasonló lemezt végighallgathattam már, és igaz, hogy ma már nehéz újat alkotni, de nem lehetetlen egyéni ízekkel operálni. A szám jól van összerakva és pontos a játék is, de max. ennyi benne a pozitívum. Az Undead dallamorientáltabb nóta, amitől ki is emelkedik egy kissé – jók a gitárriffek, a dob Pazar lüktetése is odateszi magát, így a szerkezet sem olyan lapos, mint az előző track-nél. Nem mondom, hogy rám szakad tőle az ég, de sokkal erősebb és nyugtalanabb a szólógitár játéka is. A Land of The Crimson Night enyhe progresszív hatásokkal bír, és némi szimfonikus jelleget kap az elején. A folytatás egy része ötletes és kiemelkedő, de a szaggatós részek abszolút nem illenek a témák közé. Az ének és a zene finoman árnyalják egymást, a dallamos refrén pedig jól üt nagyon. Na, ez majdnem tökéletes.

Az In The Eyes már súlyosabb témákkal, és sokkal teljesebb zenei világképpel nyit. A szikár témák fölött néhol gyengének találom az éneket, de pótolnak a dallamos részek, a kimunkált gitárhangok finomságai. Ez is egy közepes dal csak, de legalább ötletekkel tele van. A Lava Machine-t nem nagyon értem, azaz hogy inkább nem tudom hová tenni. Az elején felesleges a gitár, főleg, hogy utána egy átlagos szám bontakozik ki, megint egy a sok közül, amit lehetett volna még csiszolgatni (hacsak nem nosztalgiázás az egész). A Dirty Demon egy szép szám – de ennyi. Hogy mit hiányolok amúgy az ötletes nótából? Az erőt. Lehet, hogy élőben sokkal nagyobbat szól, de itt nincs meg az a húzás benne, amitől ütne. Kár. A Misanthrope-pal ugyanez a helyzet, lapos, gyenge, és semmi újat nem mutat fel. Nem tudom ragozni és nem is akarom: itt is vannak villanásnyi jó részek, de a hangzás túl vékony maradt, ide brutalitás kellett volna. A 2000 Lights szintén ezt a sematikus vonalat viszi tovább – jó, jó, de a gitárok mellett minden más hangszer az alapokra épül, ennél azonban azt hiszem többre képes ez a banda. Szimfonikus hatások itt is megfigyelhetőek, de semmi kiemelkedő. Az Amok finomabb témavezetése, és a durvább hangsorai jók, és minden jól van összerakva – végre egy újabb értékelhető nóta a lemezről. Az egyes hangulati képek karakteresen formálódnak, és adják át hangulatukat.

A záró dal a Centre of The Universe, ami jól indul, de azután ez is csak „elmegy” marad. A legjobb érzéssel is csak azt tudom mondani, hogy csak a fanatikusok szerezzék be – én kihagynám.

ENGLISH VERSION:

The Austrian quartet of Alexander Hilzensauer (bass), Günter Maier (guita, synth), Peter „Beda” Bachmayer (drums), Walter Stuefer (vocals) was formed last year, and even if this debut album of theirs did not turn out the best we may still have hopes.

Evil Design is a basic metal hymn which sounds good both sound- and playing-wise but it does not add anything new to the genre so to me it does not give much. I”ve heard so many records in the ’80s and ’90s, and after that, and it’s true that it’s not easy to bring something new but it’s not impossible to operate with a unique taste. The song is well-built, their play is precise, but that is all as far as the positive things go about it. Undead is a more melody-centered piece due to which it stands out a bit – the guitar riffs are good, the pulsing drums are also excellent thus the structure is not as uninspired as in the opener. It’s not that groundbreaking but the play of the solo guitar is much powerful and relentless. Land Of The Crimson Night bears slightly progressive overtones and, at the beginning, bears some symphonic touch to it. A part of the following songs is creative and outstanding but the staccato themes do not fit the whole at all. The vocals and music finely shade each other and the melodic chorus kick ass. Well, it’s almost perfect.

In The Eyes opens with heavier themes and a fuller musical worldview. I find the vocals on the morose riffs weak at certain places but the delicacy of melodic parts and the worked out guitar sounds compensate me. It’s also only an average song but at least it’s full of ideas. I don’t really understand Lava Machine, or, to be exact, I cannot put in anywhere. At the beginning, the guitar is needless, especially that after that comes an average song, again one of the many, on which they scould have worked a bit more again (or they wanted some nostalgia). Deirty Demon is a nice song – but that’s it. What am I missing from the anyway creative song? It’s power. Maybe it would shred live but here it does not have that driving force. It’s a pity. The same with Misanthrope. It’s plain, weak, and does not bring anything new. I cannot discuss it more thoroughly, neither I want it: there some good moments but the sound is thin, they should have here brutality. 2000 Lights also carries the same schematic line – it’s okay but beside the guitars all instruments is based on basics but I think the band is capable of more than that. There are also symphonic touches here but nothing outstanding. The finer themes and rawer sounds of Amok are good and it’s put together well – at last another valuable track. The mood is presented well by the characteristic sounds.

The closing song is Centre Of The Universe which starts off well but then remains just okay. I can say with the best of my intentions that it’s recommended only for fanatics – I’d skip this.
