Amikor először meghallottam, hogy az ír kelta metalos Cruachan hosszú idő után énekesnő nélkül folytatja útját (Karen Gilligan 2010 elején kilépett, mikor is a banda felbontotta a szerződését az AFM-mel), kíváncsian vártam a folytatást. A zenekar nyilatkozata alapján teljes megújulásra lehetett számítani, egyfajta „visszatérésre az extrém metalos gyökerekhez”. Őszintén szólva ettől kissé féltem, az első Cruachan lemez (a ’95-ös Tuatha na Gael) nem a kedvencem, főleg annak extrém black metalos volta miatt. Szerencsére nem ehhez tértek vissza!
A Candlelight Records-nál megjelenő új album, a Blood on the Black Robe egy ízig-vérig pogány kelta metal album lett. Tény, hogy a blackes elemek száma kissé növekedett az előző lemezekhez képest és a torz férfiének vette át a vezetést, megmaradt az ír-kelta népzenei világ fontos szerepe a dalokban. Emellett talán a zúzós elemek száma nőtt meg jelentősebben, és a női énekek rajongóinak sem kell csalódniuk, hiszen több számban jelen vannak kellemes női énekdallamok is.
Az új album 10 számot és egy intrót tartalmaz. Az első teljes szám, az I am Warrior egyértelmű közönségkedvencnek tűnik egyszerű, de fülbemászó refrénjével (I am Warrior, ready to fight, I am Warrior, ready to die!…), kitűnő hegedűdallamaival és a szám közepén lévő zúzdával. Nagyon jól rávezeti a hallgatót az albumra!
A további dalok is kitűnő hadba szólító nóták, amelyek az ősi írországi kelta királyságok dicsőségét és szabadságát hirdetik. A durva, menetelős riffeket duda-, hegedű-, és mandolinjáték tarkítja és lágyítja. Ezek mellett felcsendül még több ír népi hangszer is, amelyek még közelebb hozzák a pogány kelták világát. A durva ének végig vezeti az albumot, hiszen a korábbi lágy dallamokat biztosító énekesnő helyét csak egy-egy alkalomra vette át a koncerteken is fellépő Ashling Murphy. Így például az ötödik dal elején az akusztikus dallamokra gyönyörűen cseng a női ének, de itt is az énekes Keith felcsendülő karcos hangja vezeti a dal további részét és a metal elektromos hangszerei.
Engem a Voyage of Bran emlékeztet a leginkább a régi, megszokott Cruachan-ra, amelyben a pörgősebb női ének és a népi hangszerek is jelentősebb szerephez jutnak és nem is túl hosszú a dal. Emellett még az instrumentális Brian Boru’s March tekinthető a leginkább a klasszikusabb vonal egyenes folytatásának, de a többi dal sem tér el jelentősen tőle.
Az albumborító szép kivitelezésű, a hagyományos, kelta motívumokkal díszített, tehát egy megszokott Cruachan borítóról van szó.
Alapvetően akkora változás nem állt be a stílusukban, mint amit vártam volna, bár a blackes elemek megnőttek, a női ének pedig kiegészítővé vált. Ebből a szempontból és a dalok epikus hosszúságúvá növelésével tényleg a legelső albumhoz nyúltak vissza, de összességében hozzák az eddig megszokott színvonalat, sőt, minőségben talán meg is haladják azt.

When I heard, that the Irish Celtic Metaller Cruachan continues its way without female vocalist after a long time (Karen Gilligan left the band in early 2010, when they left the label AFM), I was curious to see the continuing. After the declaration of the band, we could count on a whole revival, a kind of „returning to the Extreme Metal roots”. Honestly I was afraid of this, because the first album of Cruachan (Tuatha na Gael, 1995) isn’t my favourite one, especially because of its Extreme Black Metal genre. Fortunately, they hadn’t returned to this!
The new album, Blood on the Black Robe (Candlelight Records) is an out-and-out Pagan Celtic Metal album. The fact is that the black elements increased in comparison to the last albums and the harsh male vocals became leading, but the importance of the Irish-Celtic folklore abode in the songs. Perhaps there are much more grinding parts and the fans of female vocals also wouldn’t be disappointed in the album, because in more track there are nice female vocal melodies.
The new album has 10 tracks and an intro. The first full length song, „I am Warrior” seems to be popular on gigs with its simple but catching chorus (I am Warrior, ready to fight, I am Warrior, ready to die!…), perfect violin melodies and the grinding in the middle. It gives the listeners good lead to the album!
The next songs are also excellent battle songs, which declare the glory and freedom of the ancient Celtic kingdoms of Ireland. The raw, marching riffs are lightened and varified by bagpipe, violin and mandolin playing. With these ones, more other Irish folk instruments are used to closen the world of the heathen Celts. The raw vocal leads the album, sith the session member; Ashling Murphy took the post of the female singer – who bore the blame of the earlier gentle tunes – for only some occasion. For example, in the beginning of the fifth song, the female vocals are beautiful to the acoustic tunes, but the singer Keith’s harsh sound and the electric instruments lead the next part of the track.
For me, the „Voyage of Bran” is the most old-styled, traditional Cruachan song, which isn’t too long, and the faster female vocals and folk instruments play more important role. And the instrumental „Brian Boru’s March” is also the part of the traditional line, but the other ones don’t differs too much from this, too.
The cover is scenic, decorated by the traditional Celtic motifs, so it’s a traditional cover of Cruachan.
Basically they hadn’t changed so many, that I waited, but the blackish elements increased and female vocals became just accessory. In this view – and with the epically longer tracks – they really returned to the first album, but they got the level of their earlier albums, or even they drew up it in quality.
