Miután egyik banda sem túl ismert, a zene egész egyedinek nevezhető.

A Zeitgeist (Ghost in a Machine)-ban sikerült őket a legjobban ötvözni, a torzított énekhang igen jól illik a szám hangulatához.

ENGLISH VERSION:

Hamburg-based Dark Age is one of the so many German bands I don’t know (Jörn Schubret was the guitarist of Holy Moses for two years, which probably makes him the most well-known member). This is the sixth album of this now 15-year old band; according to their own self-classification they are playing modern melodic death metal. However, this description is quite misleading, because it might invoke associations with bands like Soilwork or In Flames, but Dark Age doesn’t resemble these bands.

Dark Age’s music is actually a mixture of hard rock, heavy metal and modern-mechanic gothic/industrial, the death influences being exhausted in the grunting-growling vocals. In that they remind me of the Finnish band Gandalf, which unfortunately split up after two albums. Another Finnish band Deuteoronium also comes to my mind sometimes. Since none of these bands is very well-known, the music can be said to be fairly unique.

The variety of genres which may have had some influence on Dark Age makes their music eclectic, yet it is still unified and admirable. The guitar theme in the opening track is straightforwardly reminiscent of Red Hot Chili Pepper, but the Fear Factory / Crematory style staccato guitar riff / melodic vocal and synth combos are also there. Very nice is the darkish chorus then in then coming track Devote Yourself to Nothing, adding up to a good pair of opposites with its relatively airy rock verse.

This duality of dark / industrial choruses vs. rock verses accompany the whole album, and sometimes it works very well. Zeitgeist (Ghost in a Machine) is the song in which they manage to forge them best, and the distorted vocals fit the track’s atmosphere very nicely. Track six 10 Steps to Nausea is also worth mentioning, for this is the one closest to melodic death direction aimed at by the band. Here both the riffs and the vocals seem to be influenced by Amon Amarth at times. A very dynamic and catchy song, and the hard rock-like chorus is also great; too bad there’s no more of this on the release.

The basic idea is good and is not devoid of originality, yet the release is far from perfection. On the one hand, the speed could have stood more variety: practically all songs are played in mid-tempo, and this is only partly remedied by the fact that there are significant differences among tracks in the same pace. On the other hand, despite none being particularly bad, they are not very memorable either. Good ideas are placed among pretty dull formulaic riffs, not leaving much in the listener even after multiple listenings.

I came to know a likable and fun band with Dark Age, but the ideas could be brought out with more sophistication. For the time being, this is a bunch of ideas based on a good conception, rather than a really good full-blooded album. Those who like tough music but are open to hard rock may give it a try.
