Ahogy elnézem, Svájcban jelentősen felpezsdült a metal-élet, egyre több jó, igényes és színvonalas banda lép ki az ismeretlenség homályából. A most taglalandó album is egy új helvét reménységtől, a Darkmoontól származik. Habár a csapat 1995-ben alakult, az Apocalyptic Syndrome még csak a második nagylemezük, viszont a csapat szinte az eredeti felállásban működik immár 13 éve, az interneten található információk alapján csupán egy dobost cseréltek fennállásuk alatt. Stílusukról még meghallgatás előtt csak annyit tudtam, hogy melodikus, atmoszferikus elemeket kevernek gyors témákkal, illetve, hogy a blacket vegyítik a death metallal. Ezek alapján egy érdekes, sötét zenét vártam.
A lemez első négy száma a meglepetés erejével hatott, ugyanis black metalnak eleve a nyomát sem fedeztem fel, inkább a melodic death metal, az, ami ezekre a számokra hatott, de azon belül sem feltétlenül a metalcore-os vonulat – bár a göteborgi érzet tagadhatatlan azért -, a gitártémák az ötletesebbek, technikásabbak közül valók, a leadek rendben vannak, bár sok helyen a szólókat próbálják pótolni, és ez bizony valamelyest ront az összképen. Ami még furcsa volt, hogy az ebben a stílusban írt számok – mert nem mind ilyen – javarészt középtempósak, ami miatt sokszor – például az Apocalyptic Syndrome-nál – az az érzésem volt, hogy egy kissé gyorsabban eljátszva akár igazi slágerek is születhettek volna (a My Miserynél egy fokkal jobb a helyzet ilyen szempontból). Természetesen ez a tempó nem mindig hátrány, a The Hate Still Burns például kifejezetten jól el van találva minden szempontból, a leadek is a helyükön vannak, a lemez egyik legerősebb tétele. Ugyanez elmondható az ezt követő Caravan of the Deadről, amely szintén melodikus death metal, ám inkább az Amon Amarth-ra emlékeztető vikinges beütésű stílust követi. Nos, ezek után már felbukkannak a black metal stílusjegyei, igaz, ez főként az eredetileg demo-s időkből származó, újra feldolgozott Black Domainban érezhető egyértelműen, meg talán a záró, igen hangulatos – szintén a lemez egyik csúcspontjának számító – Before the Storm-ban. Az „I Am The End” című számban pedig van minden stílusból egy csipet, a szám végére még egy jól eltalált groove-os részt is beleültettek.
Igazából ez egy egyszerű album mind hallgatás, mind kritikaírás szempontjából. És szerencsére azért, mert jó. Még ha nem is minden szám mondható erősnek – például a Human Plague kifejezetten gyenge eresztés, még jó, hogy rövidre fogták – még a gyengébb helyeken is megtalálható egyfajta sajátos atmoszféra, ami hol sötét, hol dühös, és mindezt valóban könnyen memorizálható dallamokkal színesítik. A hangszeresek tudnak bánni a hangszereikkel, és a minőségi hangzás sem gátolja meg őket, hogy ezt be is mutassák. Matthias Borer vokálos sem marad meg az egyszínű üvöltésnél, ami különösen segíti az anyag befogadását. Az igazi szólókat én ugyan hiányoltam, de talán csak azért, mert az első pár szám után valamiféle melodic death metalt vártam, viszont a sokféle stílus ügyes keverése és a valóban ötletes leadek talán kárpótolják a hallgatót.
Ha összegeznem kellene, akkor azt mondanám, hogy egy ha nem is stílusmegváltó, de mindenképpen erős anyag született, amelyet nagyon jó hallgatni, és amelyet bátran lehet ajánlani minden melodeath/black stílus iránti rajongóinak, hiszen ha nem is egy slágergyűjtemény, mindenképpen tele van ötlettel. Véleményem szerint ez az album akár az utolsó lépcsőfok is lehet a nemzetközi elitbe való kerüléshez, amelyre ennyi tapasztalattal és ilyen ötletekkel minden esélye megvan a Darkmoonnak. Én kívánom, hogy így legyen, és remélem, megörvendeztetnek még minket legalább ilyen jó lemezekkel!

As far as I see, Switzerland”s metalscene is definitely on the rise, high amount of nice bands are coming out from nowhere within that area. This album was also made by a promising Swiss band, Darkmoon. Although the group was formed in 1995, Apocalyptic Syndrome is still only their second full-length release, however, the line-up hasn”t been changed often up to now, according to the Internet only the original drummer was replaced. I didn”t know much about their musical style, I only knew that their music is kinda mixture of melodic, atmospheric elements and fast tempos, and I also heard that they cross the black and death metal. So I was prepared for an interesting, dark music.
The first four tracks of the album really surprised me, because it was pure melodic death metal without any trace of black metal. It is not the common metalcore-influenced style – although we can feel the presence of Gothenburg in some tracks – the guitarriffs are more technical and creative than usual, the leads are also okay but they were intended to replace the solos which derogates the album”s overall image a bit. Most of these melodic death metal songs were written in mid-tempo, and because of this I always had the feeling that If they were faster, they would be not only good songs but really outstanding. (I think, this opinion is clearly true for the song „Apocalyptic Syndrome” but also for „My Misery” which is a bit better-written in this case than the self-titled.) Of course, I have no problems with mid-tempo if the song demands it as it does in „The Hate Sill Burns”. It”s a really well-written track with nice leads, it”s a highlight of the album. Caravan of the Dead is also outstanding, it”s melodic death metal again but in Amon Amarth”s viking/death style. After this track we can hear the band”s other side and we can recognize the presence of the black metal. The most obvious black metal influenced track is a re-recorded song from the demo-era, titled „Black Domain”, but it”s easy to hear that the last track „Before the Storm” is also filled with black elements. The song titled „I Am The End” is a great mixture of the genres with a bit groove in it.
Honestly, it”s a simple album both for listening and the reviewing. And fortunately, this is because it”s good. I wouldn”t say that each song is really good and outstanding – for example „Human Plague” is a weak but short track – but you can feel the atmosphere within every little moment which can be either dark or filled with anger, moreover, the songs are flavoured with memorizable melodies. The high quality sound makes us able to hear that the musicians are really skillful. The singer Matthias Borer often switches his vocal styles making the album easier to listen to. As I mentioned earlier, I still miss the real solos, but the nice and creative mixing of the styles and the memorizable leads compensate for that.
All I can say is „Apocalyptic Syndrome” is not an oustanding but an absolutely strong release which is really good for listening and should be recommended for the fans of this melodic death/black genre. It”s filled with great ideas, though it”s not a top-hit collection. In my opinion, this could be the last step for the international appreciation. With these ideas and their experience, Darkmoon truly has the chance to move one step forward, into the metalscene”s elite. I wish that they grab this chance, and write many nice releases like „Apocalyptic Syndrome”.
