A négytagú – Bibbie Woning (gitár), Hans Spijker (dob), Ronnie Van Der Wey (gitár), Tom Van Dijk (ének/basszusgitár) -holland thrash/death banda 1999-es lemezének újrakiadása ez. A zenekar 1989-ben alakult meg, ezzel a felállással, de 1994-1999 között nem voltak igazán aktívak. Számtalan anyagot tudhat maga mögött a négyes fogat. Zenéjük old-school elemekből épül fel, tipikus nyers, dinamikus játék hallható, klasszikus keveréssel. A bónuszként (Live At Hedon, Zwolle 2006) plusz tíz számot tartalmazó korong megalkotói többek közt felléptek a Grave, Malevolent Creation, Gorefest, Sepultura, Suffocation társaságában is.
A Kill Division nyers gitártémával, klaffogó dobjátékkal indít, majd beindul az old-school thrash teljes erőbedobással, black metalszerű énekkel. A néhol megvariált ritmusok világa technikai bravúrokban ugyan nem jeleskedik, de tökéletesen eltalált.
A Cold Being szaggatós eleje, kalapálós üteme, death metal feelingje feszes összképet mutat, minden pontosan a helyén, és a sablon szerint felépített zene nem is annyira sablon. A Waste Of Skin a harmadik a sorban. Gyors tempóval nyitnak, a szélsebes témák lesodornak minden akadályt. Jól felépített koncepció, kidolgozott témák. A szám közepe táján a belassulás még jobban arra ingerel, hogy az ember nekiálljon headbanget tolni.
A Six hatalmas thrash nóta, ízig-vérig, alap old-school hangzás, tipikus szólóséma, dühös, kötelékeit feszítő zene, bármikor be tudnám tenni egy Possessed meg egy Celtic Frost nóta társaságába:)
A Mahler súlyos indítása, sötét hangulata felkavaró. Az utána következő, inkább old school black metal pusztító hatása elképesztő. Az egész egy nagyon jól felépített track a ’90-es évek végéről úgy, ahogy ezt egy old-school bandától elvárhatjuk! A Sprayed Into Oblivion egy-egy témájáról a korai Voivod lemezek ugrottak be – persze nem plágiumról beszélek itt, hanem hangulati hasonlóságról, néhány betéttéma esetében. A játék keveréke a finom és a durva, primitív vonalvezetésnek egyaránt, a hangulata sötét, nyomasztó.
A Wings On Fire felébreszti a ’80-as évek thrash/black metal szellemét, és hiteles módon közvetíti is azt. A monoton, menetelős rész ugyanúgy megtalálható benne, mint a szélviharszerű gyors témák, a szóló jellemző, igazi metal ez a javából!
A Where Silence Dwells ismét merít egy keveset a modernebb hangzású metal dallamokból, de szerkezete nagyrészt ugyanarra a karcos thrash alapra épül, mint amit megszokhattunk eddig is a lemezen. Már-már death metalba hajlik némelyik rész, de inkább a thrash a domináns.
A The Hustler elsöprő erejű taktusokkal kezd, a témák ütősek, feszes végig minden, és elég erősen is szólal meg, köszönhetően a keverésnek is. A ritmushangszerek betonkemény alapjain bontakozik ki teljesen a szám.
Az Until The Sun Appears szintén egy tömény, fekete fém nótához hasonlít leginkább, telis-tele old-school riffekkel. Az ének karakteres, a hangszeresek lassú, lüktető témákat vonultatnak fel főképp, csak a legeleje, és a vége van megtolva egy-egy pörgős szakasszal.
A Souls Of Ice tört ritmusokkal indít, de azután erőszakosan berobbannak a riffek. Pörölyként csapnak le a hangok, mindent elpusztítva egyetlen, jéghideg csapással.
A bónusz anyag első felvétele a Heavy Metal Thunder címet viseli, és abszolút érzékelhető rajta a zenekar vonalvezetésének megmaradása. Stílusosan „primitív” nóta, monoton dob és basszus alapok, a gitárok sincsenek túlvariálva, mondhatnám, hogy a klasszikus iskola mintapéldánya ez a darab, ugyanúgy, ahogy az ezt követő Kill Division és Cold Being élő felvétele is. Mivel ezekről a számokról már esett szó, menjünk tovább annyival, hogy élőben ugyanúgy megszólal. A Supreme Forgery az első olyan nóta, amin hallatszik is, hogy egy koncertfelvétel része (az előző háromnál kicsit kételkedem). Kicsit tompa a felvétel, de ez nem vesz le a zene minőségéből. Igaz hangosabban jobban ütne súlyos és darálós témáival, de így is nagyon jól szól.
Az In Your Room igazi black metal hangoktól terhes, vészes hangvételű darab, komoly technikai tudással megtámogatva. Azt hiszem minden rajongó megtalálja ebben az élvezetét.
A Phantom Palace egy technikásabb részeket felvonultató, enyhén modernebb külsőt is kapott thrash metal nóta. Klasszikus fogások, témaalapok, fura víziók nehézkednek ránk, néhol a Mekong Delta és a Voivod jut az eszembe egy-egy témának a hangulatáról. Az Unholy egy az egyben egy black metal nóta, nincs itt semmi kecmec, itt csak súlyos riffek, kőkemény zúzások hallhatóak. Minden a helyén, jól szól, brutál.
A Mesfeken-el körülbelül ugyanez a helyzet. Nem lehet igazán a thrash metal kötelékébe sorolni, annál sokkal nyitottabb, mégis az underground keretein belül marad. A finom betét megtöri egy pillanatra az egészet, majd visszafordulunk a teljes kétségbeesés felé.
A The Fastering is inkább a régi idők szellemét eleveníti fel, a festett arcokat, a ködfátyolba bújt csatateret, ahol nemsokára mint két nagy szélvihar, úgy tör egymásra a két sereg. A gitárok feszes tartása és a ritmusszekció pontos kísérete kovácsolta ilyen nyerssé és széppé egyszerre ezt a dalt.
Az utolsó track a korongon az Until The Sun Appears, ami fentebb szintén kapott kritikát. Én minden thrash/black metal rajongónak ajánlom a figyelmébe ezt a korongot és a bandát egyaránt, de bárki ismerkedhet nyugodtan velük.

This album is a reissue of the 1999 stuff of the Dutch four-piece – Bibbie Woning (guitar), Hans Spijker (drums), Ronnie Van Der Wey (guitar), Tom Van Dijk (vocals/bass) – thrash/death act. The band was formed back in ’89 with this line-up but they weren’t really active between ’94 and ’99. And they have a lot of releases behind their back. Their music is based on oldschool elements, typically raw, dynamic play with a classic production. The creators of this band, having shared the stage with acts like GRAVE, MALEVOLENT CREATION, GOREFEST, SEPULTURA, and SUFFOCATION, have added 10 bonus tracks (Live At Hedon, Zwolle 2006) to this stuff too.
Kill Division starts off with a raw guitar theme, crushing drums, and then comes the oldschool thrash with full force, with BMish vocals. Although they don’t have the technically most challenging stuff in the music in which the rhythms are varied here and there but it’s perfectly okay.
The staccato opening, hammering rhythms, death metal feeling of Cold Being show a tight picture everything’s on its place and the music build in a stereotyped way is not so much stereotyped after all… Waste Of Skin is the third track. The tempo here is fast, the whirlwind themes sweep away everything on their way. The concept is well.-built and the themes are worked-out. And the mid-tempo slower part in the middle of the song makes you bang your head.
Six is a great thrash tune to the bone, basic oldschool sound, typical solo, and music is tight as a rope… I can put this any time beside a POSSESSED and CELTIC FROST track.
The heavy opening and dark mood of Mahler is stirring. The effect of the rather black metal destruction, which comes after that, is incredible. The whole track is a really well-built one from the end of the ’90s the way it should be done by an oldschool band! Some themes of Sprayed Into Oblivion remind me of early VOIVOD records but of course they’re not plagiarizing the Canadian it’s just the mood of some themes that is similar. They mix fine and raw, primitive ideas, and the mood is dark, oppressing…
Wings Of Fire evokes the spirit of ’80s thrash/black and presents it in an authentic way. It has both a monotonous marching part as well as real fast themes, solo, it’s real metal!
Where Silence Dwells again takes a bit of inspiration from the more modern sounding metal and it sounds strong but its structure is also built on an a raw thrash base which we can be used to on the album. Some parts can even be considered as death metal but thrash is the dominant.
The start of The Hustler is overwhelming, the themes shred, everything’s tight, and production is also good. The rhythms section’s play is rock hard.
Until The Sun Appears is also a massive BMish song and is full of oldschool riffs. The vocals are unique, the instruments bring slow and pounding themes mainly, only at the beginning and end there are some faster parts.
Souls of Ice starts with staccato rhythms but then the riffs burst out violently. The notes strike like a hammer crushing everything on their way with a single, icecold blow…
The first recording of the bonus material bears the title Heavy Metal Thunder and the direction of the band can also be felt here. It’s characteristically „primitive” with monotonous drumming and bass, and the guitars do not bring too complicated things either… I’d say it’s a fine example of the classic school like the following ones, namely the live version of Kill Division and Cold Being. Since these tracks have already been reviewed above, let it be enough that these also sound as the album versions… Supreme Forgery is the first tune that really sounds a live track (I have some doubts in the case of the preceding three…). The recording is a bit muffled but it does not ruin the quality. True, it would shred better at a higher volume with its heavy and grinding parts but it’s also okay.
In Your Room is a real black metal track, a threatening one, with seriously technical parts.
I guess every fan will find enjoyment in this.
Phantom Palace presents some technical themes also and it’s actually a thrash metal song in a modern dressing. Classic ideas, basics, and strange visions here… here and there MEKONG DELTA and VOIVOD come to mind concerning the mood. Unholy is an entirely black metal song it’s just heavy riffs and crushing. Everything’s alright, sounds good… brutal.
Mesfeken is also in that league. It cannot be simply ranked as a thrash metal track it’s more open than that, still, it remains within the domain of underground. The fine inset breaks is for a second though and then we turn toward complete despair…
The Festering also reminds us the spirit of old times with painted faces, the battlefield covered in fog, where soon the two armies will fight like storms. It was the tightness of the guitars and precise rhythm section which forged this track both raw and nice.
The last song on the record is Until The Sun Appears, reviewed also above. I recommend this album and the band to every thrash/black metal fan, but everybody can have a try with them.
