Régóta az egyik titkos kedvencem az olasz Disarmonia Mundi. Második albumukkal, a Fragments of D-Generationnel (2004) ismertem meg őket, és – sok rajongóval szemben – nekem az ezt követő 2006-os Mind Tricks sem okozott csalódást. A Björn „Speed” Stridet is felvonultató side-project persze sok tekintetben a Soilworkre hasonlít, ám mégis megkülönbözteti attól a billentyű atmoszferikusabb használata, Claudio Ravinale lágyabb, popos énekhangja (Speed itt elsősorban a durva vokálokért felel, és csak ritkán szólal meg a tiszta hangján).
Jelen kritika tárgya 2002-es, Nebularium címre hallgató debütalbumuk újrakiadása, amelyhez hozzácsapták a Restless Memoirs c. EP-t is. Aki a bandát csak két újabb albuma alapján ismeri, az jó, ha tudja, hogy a Speed előtti korszakban legfeljebb nyomokban fedezhető fel a ma ismert Disarmonia Mundi. Sokkal lassúbb volt a tempó, a dalok átlaghossza bőven öt perc fölött, és egyelőre hiányzik a későbbi albumokon hallható azonnal bevésődő refrének átütő ereje is. A műfaj sem a később megismert modern melodikus death metál (nagy hangsúllyal a „modern” szón), sokkal inkább a 90-es évek pőre melodeath, számos más hatással megspékelve – van itt még doom és thrash metál, prog rock és blues is. Az összhatás kellemes és érdekes zene, de még kicsit kiforratlan. Annak ellenére, hogy semmire sem hasonlít nagyon, mégsem hat igazán karakteresnek és egyedinek.
Ez a változatosság jól látszik az egyes dalokon is. Így pl. a Blue Lake és a Guilty Claims a Brave Murder Day korszakos Katatoniára jellemző egyszerű ritmusra épül, amelyet itt az azóta kiszállt Benny Bianco Chinto mély hörgő hangja kísér. A borongós doomos hangzást mindkét nótában elszállós bluesos dallamok váltják föl, a Guilty Claimsben pedig egy megtört ritmusú váltás is hallható.
Ezzel szemben pl. a hármas Mechanical viszonylag tipikus korabeli melodic death metal stílusban íródott, amiről könnyen beugorhat a Dark Tranquillity első két lemeze. A gyors virgázást rock’n’rollos, szinte bulihangulatú pörgés egészíti ki.
Az ötös Burning Cellst leginkább azért lehet kiemelni, mert ez a dal idézi leginkább azt az irányt, amelyen a banda később továbbhaladt. Megvan benne a rikácsoló énekhang, a kétlábgép sűrű használata, és a poposan torzított énekhang. Sajnos Benny sem annyira jól nem rekeszt, mint Speed, sem annyira jól nem énekel, mint Claudio, és valahogy a nóta sem annyira egységes, mint a mai Disarmonia Mundi dalok. A szóló viszont már itt is kiváló.
A címadó Nebularium egyszerű, de hatásos középtempós riffre épül, amelyhez remekül illik az effektezett, üdének ható ének. Egyébként ez a nóta is már kicsit a zenekar későbbi arculatát tükrözi – kár, hogy később kicsit ellaposodik
Az albumot egy hangulatos, borongós outro zárja le, az „Awakening”. Nem különösebben fontos, de szerintem ez a cím nem illik ehhez a trackhez.
Lássuk a Restless Memoirs EP-t! Ezen a banda több különböző korszakából származnak dalok. A nyitó „Across the Burning Surface” a Mind Tricks stúdióidőkben íródott, és ez hallatszik is, mert a mai DM minden jegye felismerhető rajta: kemény verze, slágeres refrén, egyszerű, gyorsan bevésődő szintidallam. Ugyanez áll a Spiral Dance-re is, amely az együttes sötétebb nótái közé tartozik. Szemben az előbbivel, itt egy jól sikerült szóló is hallható.
Ezzel szemben a korong tanúsága szerint a Flared még 1999-ben írodott. Ez egyébként nehezen hihető, mivel jóval közelebb van mai zenéjükhöz, mint a három évvel későbbi Nebulariumhoz. Hol engedhette azt meg magának tíz évvel ezelőtt egy melodikus death metál banda, hogy az Eiffel 65-ot idéző refrént illesszen be akár egyetlen számába is?… És majdnem ugyanez áll az állítólag 2000-ben íródott Chesterre is: sokkal jobban hasonlít a mai Disarmonia Mundi számokra, mint a Nebulariumra. Mégsem üti meg azok színvonalát, egyrészt mert egyszerűen nem elég erős, másrészt mert hiányzik belőle a tiszta ének.
A Kneeling on Broken Glass-t nem igazán tudom hova tenni. Maga a dal nem lenne rossz – noha éppenséggel felejthető -, de a hangzása (főleg a tompán püfögő dob) mindent alulmúl, amit a DM eddig kiadott.
A záró Ghost Song viszont nagyon jól sikerült. Leginkább fülbemászó, rádióbarát rockként lehet kategorizálni ezt a dalt, és lehet, hogy még a mai rajongók közül is sokan túlzásnak fogják tartani. Claudio ha akarna, sem tudna ennél is kevésbé metálosan énekelni, a nyitottabb hallgatóknak azonban nagyon bejöhet ez a szám.
Mint mondhatnék összességében? Miután soha nem kapott nemzetközi terjesztést, a Nebulrium talán megért egy újrakiadást, a Restless Memoirs EP viszont vegyes érzéseket keltett bennem. Vannak rajta jó dalok, de azért nem véletlen, hogy az utóbbi két albumra nem ezek kerültek fel. A dupla CD nagyon szép digipak csomagolást és igényes bookletet kapott, úgyhogy rajongóknak érdemes lehet beruházni rá, de csak akkor, ha még nem birtokolják a Nebularium CD-t. Akik viszont csak most ismerkednének a bandával, azoknak inkább a másik két albumot ajánlanám.

Italy’s Disarmonia Mundi is a secret favorite of mine for quite a while. Having come to know them with their second album Fragments of D-Generation (2004), the follow-up „Mind Tricks” (2006) didn’t diasappoint me either (unlike many fans). The act featuring Björn „Speed” Strid is of course in many respect like Soilwork, but the rather atmospheric use of synths, Claudio Ravinale’s softer, pop-like voice all make it different (Speed is here responsible for the harsh vocals in the first place, using his clean voice only occasionally.)
The subject of this review is the re-release of their 2002 debut album titled „Nebularium”, supplemented by their recent EP „Restless Memoirs”. For those whose knowledge of the band is exclusively based upon their two latest albums it is nice to bear in mind that Disarmonia Mundi as we know nowadays can be noticed here only in traces. The pace is much slower, the average length of the songs being considerably above five minutes, and those immediately memorable, smashing choruses we got used to the newer albums are not yet there. The style is not really the later modern melodic death metal (with a strong emphasis on „modern”), but rather the ’90s bare melodeath, with many other influences – there is also some doom and thrash, prog rock and even blues. The overall image is pleasant and interesting, if somewhat half-baked, music. In spite of not being obviously similar to anything else, it still doesn’t feel very characteristic or unique.
This variety is also nicely represented by the individual songs. For example, „Blue Lake” and „Guilty Claims” are based on a simple rhytm characteristic of Brave Murder Day era Katatonia, followed by the deep growls of (since then departed) vocalist Benny Bianco Chinto. The gloomy doom sound in both tracks is soon changed for airy blues melodies, and we can even hear some twisted changes.
In contrast, the third track „Mechanical” is written in the style of contemporary melodic death metal; the first two Dark Tranquillity albums can easily ring a bell. The fast paced winding guitars is followed by rock’n’rollish reeling with an almost party-feeling
Burning Ceels can be mentioned, because this is the track that best represents the route later taken by the band. There is the screeching vocals, frequent use of the double pedal, and the pop-style distorted singing. Unfortunately, Benny’s screaming is not as good as Speed’s, and his singing is not as good as Claudio’s, nor is the song as compact as today’s Disarmonia Mundi’s songs. However, the solo is excellent here.
Title track „Nebularium” is based on a simple yet effective mid-paced riff, which nicely fits the effected, fresh clan vocals. By the way, this song also predicts the band’s later profile – too bad it gets stale toward the end.
The album is closed by an atmospheric gloomy outro titled „Awakening”. Although it is of no much importance, but the title doesn’t really fit this track.
And now to the Restless Memoirs EP! This one features songs from various periods in the band’s history. Opening track „Across the Burning Surface” was written in the Mind Tricks studio era, and this can be heard, for all trademarks of recent DM can be recognized here: tough verse, hit-like chorus, simple, quickly memorable synth melody. The same goes for Spiral Dance, one amongst the band’s darker songs. As opposed to the previous one, this song features a nice solo.
Ont he other hand, Flared was written in 1999 according to the disc. By the way, this is hard to believe, for it’s much closer to their music as it is today than to Nebularium, which was also released 3 years later. How on earth could a melodeath band afford to use Eiffel 65-ish choruses in even one track ten years ago?!… And the same applies to Chester, allegedly written in 2000: it resembles today’s DM much more than Nebularium. Yet it doesn’t hit the ground; first, because it’s simply not well-written enough, second, for the lack of clean vocals.
I don’t really know where to put Broken Glass. The song itself would not be that bad – although it’s forgettable -, but its sound (especially the hollow drums) is inferior than anything DM has ever thrown to market.
However, the closing track „Ghost Song” is very good. It can be categorized mostly as catchy, radio-friendly rock, and possibly even their contemporary fans would find it an exaggeration. Claudio could not sing less metally, even if he wanted, but the more open-minded fans may admire this song a lot.
What can I say, in the end? Never having been distributed internationally, Nebularium is worth a re-release, but the Restless Memoirs EP makes me ambivalent. There are good tracks on it, but it’s no accident they haven’t made it onto the last two albums. The two CDs come with a nice digipak cover and the booklet is also of a high standard, so the fans may want to purchase for it – if they don’t yet own the Nebularium CD. But for those who have not yet made themselves familiar with the band I would rather recommend the other two albums.
