Az északi mitológiára utaló név nem egy magyar viking Metal zenekart fed, hanem egy fiatal, Debrecen városában a 2008-as év folyamán megalakult Black Metal ötös fogatot. A tagoknak azonban nem ez az első próbálkozása a műfajban, hiszen a csapat nagy része a GARGARA nevű, szintén debreceni és szintén Black Metalban dolgozó alakulatban játszott, akik, ha jól tudom, három anyagot készítettek összesen. Énekesnek pedig sikerült megnyerniük azt a Georgius-t, akit a régebbi UG hívők már jól ismerhetnek a CASTRUM nevű Ungváron ténykedő (egyébként ma is aktív, bár Gyuri nélkül…) kitűnő Death Metal bandából. A „The Vicar of Satan” pedig a DOMHRING bemutatkozó demója, amely professzionális kivitelezésben (színes, nyomdai borító, nyomott CD-r) jelent meg. Illetve a magyar kiadású BURZUM feldolgozás lemezen is helyet kaptak a „Stemen Fra Taarnet” dallal. Ennyit a csapat történetéről illetve egyéb tudnivalókról.
A srácok a Black Metal stílust szerencsére a durvább végéről fogják meg, ami számomra mindenképpen egy jó pont. Persze nem kell a korai BEHERIT vagy akár a BLASPHEMY irányvonalára gondolni, hiszen attól azért valamivel kevésbé nyers stílusban tálalják ötleteiket. Tudom, hogy ilyenkor mindenki azt várja, hogy az összehasonlítási alap miatt nevekkel álljak elő, ám most mégsem ezt teszem. Konkrét bandákat ugyanis elég nehéz lenne említenem, és ez azt hiszem, jó hír egy debütáló demo esetében. Általánosságban azért az elmondható, hogy a másodgenerációs északi (inkább svéd, illetve norvég) zenekarok hatása tapintható ki zenéjükben, és ezt az egyik tavalyi fellépésükön eljátszott „Mother North” (SATYRICON) feldolgozás is alátámaszthatja.
A zenei elemek tekintetében kellő változatosságot tapasztalhat a hallgató az anyag három „tényleges” dalában, gyors, zúzós részek ugyanúgy előfordulnak, mint középtempós témák, valamint dallamok is. A hangszeres témák általában jók, igaz rendkívül kiemelkedő dalt még nem írtak, de a mai dömpingben is azt mondhatom, hogy jó ötleteket hallhatunk. A dalok felépítése is rendben van és a témaváltások gördülékenyek. Szerintem az is jó ötlet volt, ahogy a demot felépítették, ezért is írtam a „tényleges” dalokról az imént. A dalok között ugyanis (illetve introként is az első nóta előtt) egy-egy rövid, billentyűkre épülő, sötét hangulatú instrumentális felvétel kapott helyet. Meg kell dicsérnem a hangzást is (ami a CASTRUM-os Cornelius érdeme), ami szerintem jó lett, tiszta és arányos. A stílusnak megfelelően Georgius éneke is inkább magasabb fekvésű, ám jól illik a zenéhez, bár talán egy kis változatosságot nem lenne rossz belevinni a jövőben (három dalnál még nincs gond, de hosszabb távon kissé egysíkúvá válhat). És ha már a vokális oldalnál tartok, mindenképpen ki kell emelnem Georgius dalszövegeit, aki, afféle koncept-anyagként, a köpcsényi Listi László (Listius) viselt dolgairól ír (szándékosan nem írok erről többet, de érdemes utána nézni, akit érdekel a történelem Vlad Tepes, Báthory Erzsébet-féle ága…). Rendkívüli gonddal, alaposan megírt szövegekről van szó, amik témájukat tekintve a Black Metal világától abszolút nem idegenek. Azt hiszem, ez azért nem gyakori jelenség fiatal Black Metal csapatok esetében.
Összegzéséként azt mondanám, hogy egy jól kidolgozott, komoly és értékes debütáló anyag a „The Vicar of Satan”, aminek fényében mindenképpen kíváncsi vagyok a következő megmozdulásukra.
ENGLISH VERSION:
The name, referring to Northern mythology, does not cover a Hungarian viking Metal band but a young Black Metal five-piece formed in Debrecen in 2008. However, this is not the members’ first attempt in the genre since the majority of the band played in GARGARA, which was also based in Debrecen and played Black Metal, who, if I know it well, released three stuffs. And they managed to get Georgius on vocals who can be familiar to those older UG fans knowing the excellent Death Metal band (which is still active though without Georigus…) from Ungvár, CASTRUM. „The Vicar of Satan” is the band’s debut demo which has been released professionally (colour, printed cover, printed CD-r). And they also appeared on the Hungarian BURZUM tribute album with the cover of „Stemmen Fra Taarnet”. That’s all about the band history and most important things so far.
The guys play the genre in its raw form which is already a good thing for me. Of course you shouldn’t think of BEHERIT’s or BLASPHEMY’s direction since they present their ideas less harshly. I know that everybody would like to hear band names for reference but I won’t do that. Generally speaking, the second generation of Northern bands (mostly Swedish, and some Norwegian) can be felt in the music and this seems to have been verified by the cover of „Mother North” (SATYRICON) played on one of last year’s gig, too.
As far as the musical elements are concerned, we can hear varied things in the three „actual” tracks. There are fast, crushing parts as well as mid-paced themes and melodies. The themes are mainly good though they haven’t come up with a truly outstanding song yet but even in these days of mass production I can say we can hear good ideas. The structure of the songs is also alright, the changes are also flawless. I think that it was also a good idea to build up the demo as they did, that’s why I wrote „actual” songs some lines above. Between the tracks (and as an intro before the first one) they included short, keyboard-based, instrumental tunes. I also have to say some good words about the production (which is the work of Cornelius of CASTRUM), it’s clear and well-balanced. According to the genre, Georgius’ vocals are in the higher regions but it fits the music though a bit of variation could be good in the future I think (it’s good for these three songs but in the long run it could be a bit one-dimensional). And speaking about the vocal-department, I must point out the lyrics of Georgius who, as a sort of concept, wrote lyrics dealing with the deeds of László Listi (Listius) of Köpcsény (I deliberately do not write more of this, it’s worth looking after if you’re into the Vlad Tepes/Erzsébet Báthory-line of history…). These lyrics are written with utmost care, and the themes are not alien to Black Metal at all. I believe it’s not a frequent thing at young Black Metal bands.
As a summary, I’d say that „The Vicar of Satan” is a well worked-out, serious and valuable debut material in the light of which I’m really looking forward to their next move.
