Igen, azt hiszem, ez várható volt előre is, hogy az éppen nem is tudni, milyen státuszban lévő norvég banda Inferno-fesztiválos fellépése felvételre illetőleg kiadásra kerül majd. Ráadásul dupla CD-vé dagasztva, a Wackenes fellépést hozzácsapva.

Úgy gondolom, a számok listáját áttekintve elmondható, hogy a zenekar Black Metal oldalát helyezték előtérbe, teszem hozzá szerencsére. Legalább is számomra. Nem mennék itt és most bele a csapat pályájának taglalásába, de tény, hogy számomra az első két teljes nagylemez (meg természetesen, az Emperor mini és a Wrath of the Tyrant demo), nyújt teljes körű élvezetet, ha EMPEROR-ról van szó. A későbbi albumokról csak szinte mutatóba van itt némi anyag: „Curse Ye All Men!”, „An Elegy of Icaros”, „In the Wordless Chamber”, és ez minden. Van viszont egy sor klasszikus EMPEROR dal, tökéletes hangzással, tüzes előadásban. Tényleg nagyon jó dolog szinte majdnem lemezminőségben hallani ezeket a gyöngyszemeket (főként „The Majesty of the Night Sky”, „Towards the Pantheon”, „Thus Spake the Nightspirit”), amik a Black Metal örökérvényű darabjai maradnak mindig is, azt hiszem, ezt bizton mondhatom. Nagyon jó az is, hogy a billentyűs részek is úgy szólalnak meg majdnem 100%-ig, ahogy anno a lemezeken, és a dalok tempója sem szignifikáns mértékben gyorsabb az eredeti verzióknál.

Ami viszont kissé rontja az összképet, az az, hogy a két koncert programja majdnem teljes mértékben megegyezik egymással, így kissé van egy fura érzése az embernek, ha egyvégtében meghallgatja a több mint 2 órás felvételt (jó, alapvetően nem rossz az anyag, hogy kétszer egymás után ne hallgathatnánk meg, de mégis, kicsit becsapva érezheti magát a hallgató, mert a 2. lemezre kerülhetett volna más program is…). Illetve a lemez összevágásakor egy hiba is becsúszott, miszerint az Inferno-s buli „Inno a Satan” dalának felkonferálása előtt az „In the Wordless Chamber”-t jelenti be Ihsahn… Ez azért elég kellemetlen szerintem. Illetve azt sem értem, miért kellett a nagyszerű „Into the Infinity of Thoughts” és „The Burning Shadows of Silence” dalokból egy medley-t csinálni, mindkét nótát megrövidítve. Szerintem minden rajongó szerette volna ezeket egyben hallani, ráadásul pont a buli legelején elég fura ez számomra. De ezeken a hibákon többnyire felül lehet emelkedni, mert maga a hangzóanyag tényleg osztályon felüli, és képes feledtetni a zavaró tényezőket. Gondolom, rajtam kívül még sokan mások is szerették volna élőben látni a bandát ezekkel a régi dalokkal. Ezzel az anyaggal az audiális oldalra legalább lehetőség nyílik.

Yeah, I think it could be expected. I mean that the Inferno live gig of the don’t-know-what-status-the-band-has-now EMPEROR would be recorded and released. Moreover, to have been enhanced with their Wacken gig, thus making up a double CD stuff.

I believe that looking at the tracklist one could say the Black Metal side of the band has been emphasized, fortunately. To me, at least. I wouldn’t go for the discussion of the band’s career here and now but that’s a fact that to me the first two full-lengths (together with the Emperor mini and Wrath of the Tyrant demo of course) mean complete enjoyment when it comes to EMPEROR. From later albums, there is hardly anything here with the exception of „Curse Ye All Men!”, „An Elegy of Icaros” and „In the Wordless Chamber”, and that’s all. There are, however, a lot of classic EMPEROR tunes performed with a perfect sound and fire. It was indeed great to hear these pearls (especially „The Majesty of the Night Sky”, „Towards the Pantheon”, „Thus Spake the Nightspirit”) in almost studio-quality which are for sure eternal pieces of Black Metal. It’s also very good that the keyboard parts sound almost exactly like on the records back then, and the tempos are not significantly faster than those of the original versions.

Which ruins the whole a bit is the fact that the programme of the two gigs are almost exactly the same so you’ve got a strange feeling if you are listening to the more-than-two-hour-long album in full (okay, it’s not a bad stuff to listen to it again, still, I think the second disc could have been different…). And during editing, there was a mistake namely before the Inferno-version of „Inno a Satana” where Ihsahn announces it’s gonna be „In the Worldess Chamber”… It’s rather unpleasant in my opinion. And I also do not understand that why the band made a medley out of „Into the Infinity of Thoughts ” and „The Burning Shadows of Silence”, thus shortening both tracks. I think every single fan would have been glad to hear these songs in full version, the more so at the very beginning of the gig. But these mistakes can be overcome since the material is that great, and is able to make you forget those disturbing factors. I believe, besides me, there are a lot of people out there who wanted to see the band performing live with these old songs. With this release, we can have access to the audial side at least.
