Death metal rajongók körében jól ismert a kanadai Maurizio Iacono neve, aki a kultikus Kataklysm vokalista frontembere (1998-ig basszere volt). Talán az itáliai gyökerek késztették arra, hogy 2008-ban önálló projektet indítson Ex Deo néven, mely epikus death metalba ágyaz ókori római témákat. A projekthez 2009-ben csatlakozott a Kataklysm többi tagja is, plusz egy szintis, így színpadképes zenekarrá váltak. Ebben az évben debütált a Romulus címre keresztelt nagylemez is. 2012. augusztus végén pedig jön az őrült császár, Caius Caesar (hírhedt becenevén Caligula) korát feldolgozó Caligvla album.
A lemezt az epikus, klipes címadó, az I, Caligvla nyitja, sok narrációval és filmzenés hatással. A The Tiberius Cliff (Exile to Capri) hátborzongató effektekkel operál, illik a véres, sötét témához. A harmadik Per Oculus Aquila a lemez egyik legerősebb tétele véleményem szerint, a római legionáriusok életéről szól, emelkedett, hősi darab. A cím nyelvtanilag ugyan nem helyes (jelentése „A sas szemén át” lenne, ami helyesen Per Oculum Aquilae latinul), de nagyszerű gitárszólóval operál. A Divide Et Impera („Oszd meg és uralkodj”) egy agresszív modern death tétel, amitől azonban nagyon elüt a popos női kórus. Ellenben a dal outrójában hallható népies/orientális témából több is elfért volna az anyagon. A Pollice Verso (Damnatio Ad Bestia) („Hüvelykujjal lefelé (A bestia megsemmisítése)”, helyesen Bestiam lenne) sötétebb darab, nagyszerű melodeath riffekkel és háttérkórussal. Itt hallhatunk egy kevés igazi brutális mélyhörgést is, ebből is lehetett volna több az egész korongon. A Burned to Serve as Nocturnal Light némi pogány metalos hatással rendelkezik, majd következik másik kedvencem, a germánok rómaiak feletti győzelméről szóló Teutoburg (Ambush of Varus). Ez egy melodikusan induló dal, majd részben átmegy brutálisan gyors zúzdába, de megmarad a melodikus gitár- és énektéma is. A narrációk miatt igazi filmzenés fílingje van. Az Along the Appian Way a Spartacus-féle rabszolgafelkelés véres leveréséről és megtorlásáról szól, e dalban helyet kapott egy kevés károgás is, ahogy a brutális Once Were Romans-ban is. A római dicsőség és értékek vesztéről szóló epikus zúzda után egy elég hosszú szimfonikus outró, az Evocatio: the Temple of Castor & Pollux zárja a lemezt.
Az 50 perces anyag jóval epikusabb lett, mint elődje és egyben érettebb is. A hangzás, a grafika, a római történelem megörökítésének ötlete mind-mind dicséretes dolgok, a hörgések azonban kissé egysíkúak, néha erőltetettnek tűnnek, emellett engem személy szerint zavarnak a latin címek hibái is, hiszen cél lenne a teljes autentikusság. Az epikus metal és a klasszikus death metal rajongóinak ugyanúgy ajánlott anyag, mint az ókor és Róma rajongóinak!

Among the fans of death metal, the name of the Canadian Maurizio Iacono, the vocalist frontman of the cultic Kataklysm (till 1998 on bass) is well-known. Maybe his Italian roots made him start an own project in 2008 called Ex Deo which combines epic death metal with ancient Roman topics. The other members of Kataklysm plus a keyboard player joined the project in 2009 so they became a live band. In the same year their first long-player, entitled Romulus was also released. At the end of August, 2012, their new album, Caligvla comes, evoking the age of the insane emperor, Caius Caesar (with his infamous nickname: Caligula).
The epic title- and clip-track, I, Caligvla starts the album with many narrations and movie soundtrack influences. The Tiberius Cliff (Exile to Capri) uses shivering effects, it fits the bloody, dark topic. In my opinion, the third song, Per Oculus Aquila is one of the strongest tracks on the album, it’s about the life of Roman legionaries; it’s an elevated, heroic piece. Although its title has grammatical mistakes (it’d mean “Through the Eye of the Eagle”, the correct form in Latin is Per Oculum Aquilae), but it has a great guitar solo. Divide Et Impera (“Divide and Rule”) is an aggressive modern death track, but its pop-like female choir absolutely doesn’t fit the song. On the other hand there should be more similar folkish/oriental tunes on the material than in its outro. Pollice Verso (Damnatio Ad Bestia) (“Thumb Turned Down (Condemnation Of The Beast)”, correct form would be Bestiam) is a darker one with great melodeath riffs and backing choir. We can also hear some really brutal low growls; there should be more from these on the album, too. Burned to Serve as Nocturnal Light has a bit of pagan metal atmosphere, and then comes my other favourite, Teutoburg (Ambush of Varus) about the Germanic victory over the Romans. This is a song with melodic beginning, which turns into brutal fast grinding, but the melodic guitar and vocal themes also remain. It has a strong movie soundtrack feeling because of the narrations. Along the Appian Way is about the bloody subjugation and retribution of the slave rebellion of Spartacus, it has some screaming as well as Once Were Romans. After this epic smashing about the extinction of the Roman glory and values, the album is finished by a long enough symphonic outro, Evocatio: the Temple of Castor & Pollux.
The 50-minute-long material is more epic and also more mature than its predecessor. The sound, the graphic artwork and the idea of the immortalization of the Roman history are all commendable things, but the grunts are a bit monotonous, sometimes they seem to be unnatural and personally I’m annoyed by the mistakes of the Latin titles, because authenticity should be the aim. It’s recommended for the fans of epic metal and classic death metal and also for the fans of the antiquity and Rome!
