Bár a folk metal, mint önálló műfaj már a ’80-as évek végén (gondoljunk csak a magyar Swetterre) illetve a ’90-es évek elején megszületett (vegyük nemzetközi szülőatyát, az angol Skycladet), az, hogy mára „divathullámként” illetve „trendként” emlegetik és vezető bandái nem hiányozhatnak egy komolyabb fesztivál headlinerei közül sem, leginkább egy a ’90-es évek második felében meginduló finnországi zenekarnak köszönhető. A „trendteremtő” finn trollok, azaz a Finntroll nem is annyira finn, hiszen tagjainak egy része a helyi svéd kisebbség fia, ez és a nyelv „trollos” hangzása miatt aztán a csapat minden dala svédül szólal meg, immáron a hatodik nagylemezen. A Blodsvept („Vérrel borított”) 2013. március 22-én jelenik meg Finnországban, 25-én pedig Európa többi országában ismét a Century Media gondozásában.
A nagysikerű korai albumok után a kicsit sötétebb hangulatú Ur Jordens Djup jött, majd ezután ismét egy erős, trollosabb anyag született a 2010-es Nifelvind személyében, így nagy kérdés volt, hogy milyen szintet üt meg a Blodsvept. Indításként egyből az erős, blackes, beharangozó single-ként is szolgáló címadóval szembesülünk, ami egyből elvarázsol minket a trollok finn erdeibe. A promóanyagokban sokfelé olvashattuk, hogy a lemezen ska, klezmer és salsa jelennek meg új elemekként, de szerintem ezek eddig sem hiányoztak a Finntroll arzenáljából, viszont az Ett Folk Förbannat chiptune-hatású billentyűjátéka már inkább meglepetésként ért. A När Jättar Marscheraban és a szaxofonos Mordminnenben megtapasztalhatjuk azt is, hogy Vreth mély hörgése erősebb lett, ami nagyon pozitív, hisz így élőben is jobban elő tudja adni a régi vokalisták hangszínére írt korai dalokat. A mesélős, trollkórusos Rösets Kung és a népi pengetőssel operáló, lassabb Skövlarens Död a korai és a modern hangzást és irányvonalat egyesítik nagyon jól. A lemez csúcspontja vagy kiteljesedése számomra a Skogsdotter–Häxbrygd–Två Ormar–Fanskapsfylld négyes, az első dalnak komoly jövőt jósolok, kitűnő swinges bendzsópárbajt hallunk benne. Ha ehhez is készül egy a Trollhammarenhez és az Under Bergets Rothoz hasonló bohókás klip, igazi slágerré válhat, bár ugyanez akár a blokk másik három daláról is elmondható! A korongot a kezdő Blodsvepttel együtt egyfajta zúzós keretbe foglalja a Midvinterdraken, így lesz igazán teljes a kép.
A zenekar előzetesen a Nattfödd és a Nifelvind illetve a Boney M és a Borknagar közti átmenetként írta körül a friss kiadvány irányvonalát és azt mondhatom, ezek a hasonlatok igen találóak! Tempóváltások, stílusvegyítések és stílusváltások egy-egy dalon belül, laza táncolós dallamok és sötét zúzdák váltják egymást végig. Talán az utóbbi idők egyik legváltozatosabb lemezéről van szó! Persze ez mindig jellemző volt a Finntrollra, de ez a korong még a Nifelvind amúgy magas színvonalát is megüti, sőt megközelíti az első három nagylemez szintjét is. Minimális hiányérzetem támad csak e lemez kapcsán: talán egy, a Blodmarsch-hoz hasonló önálló intró és az utóbbi lemezekről úgy általában hiányzó hangulatos, rövid átvezetők elfértek volna még rajta. Emellett néhol a billentyűt és a népi hangszereket kicsit túlságosan háttérbe szorították, főleg a vokálokhoz és gitárokhoz képest. Persze ezek az apróságok nem változtatnak a törzsanyag értékén, amit tovább növel a Skrymer gitáros által készített látványos és mókás grafika is. Bízok benne, hogy egy lemezbemutató turnéval legkésőbb ősszel Magyarországra is elér a horda az északi erdőségekből!

ENGLISH VERSION:
Although folk metal as an independent genre was already born in late ‘80s (think of the Hungarian band, Swetter) or in early ‘90s (see the international pioneers, Skyclad from England), it could only become a so-called “trend” or “mainstream/popular genre” primarily with the help of a band from Finland, started in the second half of the ‘90s. The “trend-starter” Finnish trolls alias Finntroll isn’t so Finnish, because more members are sons of the local Swedish minority so this and the “trollish” sound of the language are the reasons why all of their songs are in Swedish – even now, on their sixth full-length album. Blodsvept (“Wrapped in Blood”) is out on March 22nd, 2013 in Finland and on 25th in the rest of Europe, again via Century Media.
After the early cultic albums the quite darker Ur Jordens Djup was unleashed and then another strong, more trollish material was born in 2010 entitled Nifelvind; so it was a big question if Blodsvept can reach the same level. As a starter we are assaulted by the strong, blackish title-track which immediately transports us to the magical Finnish forests of the trolls. In many promo materials we read that ska, klezmer and salsa appears on the album as new elements, but I think these stuff haven’t been missing from the arsenal of Finntroll before, but on the other hand, the chiptune influenced keyboards in Ett Folk Förbannat was more surprising for me. In När Jättar Marschera and in Mordminnen – which also has saxophone tunes – we can experience that Vreth’s low growls have became stronger and this is very good, because now he can perform the early songs better on gigs – they were originally written for the tones of the old vocalists. Rösets Kung with its story-telling theme and troll choir and the slower Skövlarens Död with ethnic plucked instrument theme unite the early and modern sound and direction very well. The heyday or peak of the album is the quartet of Skogsdotter–Häxbrygd–Två Ormar–Fanskapsfylld for me, I predict a serious future for the first song, it has an awesome banjo duel and swing feeling. If they shoot a droll music video for it, similar to Trollhammaren or Under Bergets Rot, Skogsdotter can become a real hit – although this can be true for the three other tracks in the block, too! The album has a frame of grinding pieces, Blodsvept in the beginning and Midvinterdraken at the end, this makes the picture complete.
Previously the band described the direction of the fresh material as a crossover between Nattfödd and Nifelvind and between Boney M and Borknagar and I should say: these are absolutely pertinent descriptions! Tempo changes, mixing of genres, altering between styles inside one song, fancy dance melodies and dark grindings are altering during the whole release. Maybe this is one of the most diverse materials recently! Of course this has always been typical in Finntroll, but this longplayer is up to the high mark of Nifelvind and it even approaches the level of the first three LPs. I miss only a few things: the album should also contain an independent intro, similar to Blodmarsch and some short, atmospheric interludes – which aren’t included on the later materials at all. Besides these, sometimes the keyboard and the folk instruments are unnecessarily pushed into the background, especially in comparison to vocals and guitars. But of course these fillips don’t change the value of the main material, which is enriched by the scenic and funny artwork, made by the guitarist Skrymer, too. I hope that the horde will return to Hungary from their Nordic woodlands during a release tour in the autumn or earlier!
