A Spirit of the North nagyszerű zongoradallamokat használ, riffjeivel és tiszta kórusaival igazi régi vágású viking metal himnusz. A dal dobjátéka erősen menetelős, míg a szimfonikus jellegű háttérzene hátborzongató északi légkört varázsol.

ENGLISH VERSION:

Fortid (or Fortíð with Icelandic spelling, it means “past”) was started in 2002 as a solo-project of Elnar Thorberg Guðmundsson, also known as Eldur (from Curse or Potentiam). The Icelandic musician’s goal was to make a musical form for the most important work of the Old Norse literature and mythology, the Völuspá. Its manifestations were released in 2003, 2007 and 2010 as an album trilogy – the last album was partly recorded in Norway, where he moved in 2008 to. But after finishing this great goal, Eldur decided to continue Fortíð but now as a real band. So after three Norwegian members joined and they had some gigs, they started to work on the first material of the new era. This album, entitled Pagan Prophecies was released on August 24th, 2012 via the German label, Schwarzdorn Production, which released the last part of the Völuspá trilogy, too.

The album’s opener is the title-track, Pagan Prophecies, where the blackish blastbeats are supported by epic and melodic guitar and keyboard themes and an acoustic interlude. (By the way most of the new album’s lyrics are in English.) Spirit of the North uses great piano melodies; with its riffs and clean choirs it’s a true old school viking metal anthem. On the other hand, Electric Horizon is an aggressive black metal track with strong growls and screams and modern topic. Lesser Sons of Greater Fathers is a melodic, sometimes atmospheric song with acoustic intro and clean vocals. The fifth Sun Turns Black is another heavier piece but it also has surprisingly melodic guitar themes and great keyboard tunes in the background and the solo. Ad Handan starts with organ-like keys and acoustic guitar but after one and a half minutes it turns into pagan metal. The drum theme is marching, while the symphonic-like background music creates a shivering Nordic atmosphere. We can call the 3-minute-long acoustic Endalok an outro, but after it there’s an 18-minute-long hidden bonus, too, which contains only sounds of thunder and rain.

The front cover has a good atmosphere, fits the album. The sound is also very good and strong, I have no cause of complaint about it. And above this all, Fortíð gets ahead of most of the similar bands both in quality and in variety/richness in melodies. So if you want to listen to good pagan/viking black metal, get acquainted with this Icelandic-Norwegian horde, as soon as you can!
