Mostanában egyre több kitűnő olasz banda jelenik meg a folk metal színtéren. Ennek a talján folk metal közösségnek egyik jeles tagja a Furor Gallico („gallok/kelták dühe” latinul), akik, mint nevük is mutatja, a folk metalon belül is a kelta metal részműfaj tagjait gyarapítják. Előre bocsátva azt mondhatom, az egyik legjobb kelta metal album a szintén Furor Gallico címre hallgató debüt nagylemez!
A nyolctagú észak-itáliai csapat zenéje elsőre biztosan sokaknak az Eluveitie-t juttatja eszébe, nem a metalos vonal miatt, hanem a népi hangszerek garmadája (furulyák, hárfa, buzuki, hegedű, duda, bodhrán, tekerőlant) és a kelta népzenei alapok miatt. Ez a felhasznált kelta zene nem csak az általánosan ismert ír és skót kelta zene, hanem a ritkábban játszott breton és velszi zene is (ebben szintén hasonlítanak a helvétekre). A zenekar alapvetően a kelta mitológiából és történelemből meríti témáit, nagyon jól keverve a metal hangzását a sokféle népi hangszerrel, amik között dominál az ír buzuki és a hegedű, de különlegességet kölcsönöz a metalban igazán ritkán használt kelta hárfa is. Emellett a zenében nagyon pozitív a sokféle vokál (ebből a hörgést, károgás és a tiszta éneket egy személy, Pagan adja, míg ezeket női és háttérvokálok is erősítik). Nem egysíkú a Furor Gallico zenéje, az biztos!
A dalszövegeket nem egy ember írja, hanem többen, tagok és külső segítők is, ez a minőségen nem ront, sőt! Érdekessége még a dalszövegeknek, ami számomra hatalmas pozitívum, hogy nem csak angolul vannak, hanem az angol dalok mellett anyanyelvi, olasz dalok is vannak, sőt van egy dal helyi dialektusban is, nyugat-lombárdul (ez az olasz egyik nyelvjárása, Milánó környékén). A változatosságot növeli az, hogy az albumon instrumentális tételek, rövid, pörgős dalok, normál hosszúságú középtempós és gyors zúzós dalok is vannak, sőt, a zárótétel egy hosszabb lélegzetű, epikusabb nóta.
A 13 tételes lemez egy nagyszerű folkos intróval kezdődik. Ez aránylag hosszú, két perces, de szerintem egyik legjobb folk metalos intró, nekem nagyon bejön. A második nóta az olasz nyelvű Venti di Imbolc, igazi kelta ünnepély hangulatát kelti, hiszen arról is szól. Ebben a dalban szerepel az album egyetlen vendégzenésze, aki tekerőlanttal színesíti a dalt. A következő három dal (Ancient Rites, Cathubodva és a The Gods Have Returned) angol nyelvű, a kelta mitológia és élet egy-egy részről szólnak. Az Ancient Rites-nak nagyon fogós hegedűjátéka van és refrénje hatalmas. A rómaiak és gallok közti csatát és az ahhoz kötődő mondát elmesélő Cathubodva pedig úgy egészében csodálatos, a durva részek után egy lágy rész idézi fel a csata utáni jeleneteket és igen fogós a váltott hörgéssel és károgással előadott refrénje. A The Gods Have Returned pedig egy fülbemászó furulyadallamos tétel. Az instrumentális Golden Spiral egy Eluveitie albumra is elmenne, igazi keltás átvezető dal, gyönyörű hegedű- és hárfajátékkal. A Curmisagios az albumról a kedvenc nótám, egy gyors, mulatós, pörgős buzuki-hegedű párharc nyugat-lombard (inszubér) nyelvjárású szöveggel. A The Miracolous Child egy kifejezetten szomorú dal, középtempós és melodikus részekkel. Az olasz nyelvű Medhelan ismét egy jó kis hegedűjátékkal kezd, de nagyon jó kétlábdobos zúzás egészíti ki ezt, bár alapvetően középtempós nótáról van szó. A két olasz nyelvű nótát az instrumentális Bright Eyes köti össze, dallamos furulyajátékkal, akusztikus gitárral és törzsi dobjátékkal. A következő talján nóta a La Caccia Morta, mely a visszaszoruló pogányságról szól, kitűnő, death és heavy metalos gitár riffekkel és jó kis furulyás dallammal. A dal a végére begyorsul, amihez nagyon jól megy a kétféle hörgős ének, ezek nagyon tetszenek az egész albumon. Az utolsó előtti dal a gael (ír és skót kelta) mitológia halált jelző kísértetét megidéző Banshee, ami szerintem az egyik legnagyobb nóta. Lassú, lágy zenével indul, majd begyorsul, hogy aztán ismét lágyba csapjon át, majd a refrénnel újra visszahozza a népies zúzást, felidézve a dalszövegben is megjelenő örök körforgást. Ebben a dalban hallható a skót Felföld világát felidéző dudajáték is, de ez a gael téma miatt nem meglepő, viszont nagyon jó! Az elég hosszú lemezt a leghosszabb, legepikusabb tétel zárja, a bodhránnal és buzukival nyitó The Glorious Dawn. A dal különlegessége hossza mellett a középen található heavy metalos rész, amire már a dobjáték is utal, de igazán a közepén lévő heavy/power/speed metalos énekben és gitárszólóban teljesedik ki. A kitűnő népies részekkel és a végén lévő hangszer nélküli kórussal kitűnő zárótétel.
Az egész album kitűnő és a hangzás minőségére sem lehet panasz, hiszen minden tisztán hallatszik, nagyon jól masterelték a lemezt. A borító is nagyon szép, jók a promó képek és a minta is. És eredetileg mindezt önköltségből hozták ki, saját kiadványként! Az albumot pedig a német Massacre Records kiadó 2011. július végén, nemzetközi szinten újra megjelenteti. Le a kalappal a fiatal taljánok előtt!

Recently more and more excellent Italian bands appear in the folk metal scene. One amazing member of this Italian folk metal community is Furor Gallico („wrath/fury of Celts/Gaulish” in Latin), who are – as their name shows – the part of the Celtic metal subgenre. I anticipate, the self-titled Furor Gallico debut full-length album is one of the best Celtic metal albums!
The music of the Northern Italian band of eight members will remind many people of Eluveitie, but not with the metal parts, but with their dozens of folk instruments (whistles, harp, bouzouki, violin, bagpipe, bodhrán, hurdy-gurdy) and the Celtic folk musical base. This Celtic music is not only the generally known Irish and Scottish music, but also the rarely played Breton and Welsh music (it’s also a similarity with the Helvetians). The topics come from the Celtic mythology and history, their metal music is well combined with their many folk instruments, the Irish bouzouki and the violin dominates their music, but the Celtic harp makes it very unique, because this instrument is very rarely used in metal music. Also very good is the using of the many kinds of vocals (the main growls, screams and clear vocals are by one person, Pagan, strengthen with female and backing vocals). The music of Furor Gallico isn’t boring for sure!
The lyrics are written by not only one person, but by the members and also other supporters, and this thing doesn’t make the lyrics weaker, even it makes them stronger! Also interesting, that the lyrics aren’t only in English but also in their mother tongue, Italian and there is one song in a local dialect, Western Lombard (this is one of the dialects of Italian, around Milan), and this is very positive in my view! The album contains instrumental songs, short, fast songs and normal, mid-tempo and also fast, grinding track, and even a longer, epic one, the last song and these things make the album more colourful.
The album contains 13 tracks, and begins with a great folk intro. The Intro is a bit longer, 2 minutes long, but in my opinion, one of the best folk intros, I like it very much! The second track is the Italian Venti di Imbolc, calling up the atmosphere of a true Celtic feast, because the song is about a feast. In this so song we can hear the guest musician, a hurdy gurdy player, too. The next three songs (Ancient Rites, Cathubodva and The Gods Have Returned) are in English, and tell parts of the Celtic mythology and life. The song Ancient Rites has a catchy violin melody and a great chorus. Cathubodva which tells a legend about a battle between the Romans and Celts is an amazing song. After the brutal parts there is a good, soft part calling up the moments after the battle and the chorus of the song with alternating growl and scream is very catchy. The Gods Have Returned is a song with a melodious whistle tune. The instrumental Golden Spiral could be on an Eluveitie album, a true Celtic interlude with beautiful violin and harp play. The song Curmisagios is my favourite track from the album, a fast, happy bouzouki-violin duel in Western Lombard (Insubrian) dialect. The Miracolous Child a typical sad song with mid-tempo and melodic parts. The Italian Medhelan also begins with a good violin melody but it’s supported by double bass drum grinding, but the song is basically in medium tempo. Between the two Italian songs there is the instrumental Bright Eyes with melodic whistle part, acoustic guitar and tribal drum parts. The next Italian song is La Caccia Morta about the dying Paganism with perfect death and heavy metal guitar riffs and great whistle melody. The song is becoming faster to the end and the two kinds of growl befit it well, I like the growls and screams on the whole album. The 12th song is Banshee about the spirit of Gaelic (Scottish and Irish Celtic) mythology who is the omen of death. In my view this is one of the best songs on the album. It begins with slow music and then become faster to become slow again, and with the chorus it returns with the folkish grinding, bringing up the eternal circle of life and death which is included in the lyrics, too. In this song we can hear a very good bagpipe them which calls up the world of the Scottish Highlands. The long album ends with the longest, epic track, The Glorious Dawn, with bodhrán and bouzouki at the beginning. The speciality of this song – along with its length – is the heavy metal sound in the middle, which begins with the drums and culminates with a heavy/power/speed metaller singing and guitar solo. The great folkish parts and the choir at the end make it a good ending track.
The whole album is amazing and the quality is also very, well mastered material. The cover is also very nice with good promo photos and picture. And originally all of these made from own budget, as an independent record! And the album will be internationally re-released at the end of July, 2011 by the German label, Massacre Records. Congratulations to the young Italians!
