Chris Bowes alapvetően a humoros skót kalózbrigád, az Alestorm frontembereként és zenekarvezetőjeként közismert, és aki csak egyszer is találkozott vele testközelben, tudja, hogy egy iszonyat komolytalan figuráról van szó. S mivel az Alestorm fedélzetén is gyakran felzeng a klasszikus power metal, ez érezhető a dalokban, így nem lepett meg, mikor híre kelt, hogy Chris fantasy power metal bandát alapít Gloryhammer néven. Túl sok komolyságot nem vártam e projekttől sem, főleg a név, a promó videó és promó fotók láttán, bár azért az, hogy a svájci származású, de magyaros nevű Thomas Laszlo Winklert (Emerald) kérte fel Chris vokalistának, előremutató lépés volt. Szerintem végül még túlontúl komoly is lett az összkép, de erről majd később.
A Gloryhammer bemutatkozó lemeze 2013 márciusában jött ki a Napalm Records gondozásában Tales from the Kingdom of Fife címmel. Az epikus power metal muzsika mellé történelmi alapú, de fiktív, fantasztikus sztorit kerített a főmágus Chris (itt egyébként csak billentyűsként tevékenykedik). Fife királysága egy ősi pikt, majd skót államocska volt a mai kelet-skót partokon, Dundee pedig e királyság északi határán állt/álló város, ahogy a dalszövegekben előkerülő többi földrajzi terület is létező skót vidék. Viszont a mesélős dalszövegek egy fantáziavilágot vázolnak elénk. Koncepciója elég tipikus: a sötét varázsló (itt Zargothrax néven) gonosz erők és lények segítségével leigázza a hatalmas királyságot (ez esetben Fife-ot), felprédálja a fővárost (jelen esetben Dundeet) és foglyul ejti a gyönyörű hercegnőt. Ezt követően jön a hős (itt Angus McFife), aki más héroszok (pl. Crail lovagjai), lények (sárkányok, jó varázslók, istenek) és csodatárgyak („a Dicsőség Kalapácsa”, „az Igazság Amulettje”) segítségével végül legyőzi a sötétséget, kiszabadítja szerelmét és helyreállítja a világ rendjét.
Tehát ebben semmi újdonság nincs és sajnos az általam nagyon várt humor sem fűszerezi igazán a szövegeket, az egyetlen komikusabb momentum talán az, hogy itt az unikornisok a gonoszt szolgálják, de még ezt is megmagyarázzák a The Unicorn Invasion of Dundeeban, miszerint ezt csak a varázsló sötét bűbája miatt teszik. Ha szövegileg elég sablon is a sztori, mi a helyzet a zenével? E téren szerencsére több a pozitívum, a billentyűtémák bombasztikusak és magasztosak (több helyen erősen érződik az Alestormos kötődés), a gitárok erős, magukkal ragadó speedes riffeket tolnak és az egész hangulatot több helyen emelik vonósok, rézfúvósok és akusztikus gitárok, így kölcsönözve némi középkori beütést a muzsikának. Winkler hangja zseniális, a kórusok is kellemesek és az utolsó, hosszú számban, a The Epic Rage of Furious Thunderben még egy kevés szépséges női éneket is hallhatunk. Tempóváltások terén sincs panasz, fennkölt intró (Anstruther’s Dark Prophecy), gyors, zúzós tétel (Angus McFife, Beneath Cowdenbeath, Magic Dragon), bólogatós középtempó (Quest for the Hammer of Glory, Hail to Crail) és lágy, melankolikus dal (Silent Tears of Frozen Princess) egyaránt került a lemezre.
Persze mindez nem azt jelenti, hogy a Gloryhammer bármi újat felmutatna kardlengetős-sárkányölős hősi metal színtéren, egyszerűen csak jól gazdálkodik a műfaj fegyvertárából. Ez persze nem baj, de egy kicsit én többet vártam ettől az anyagtól: több humort, egyedibb témaválasztást, zeneileg pedig még több középkori hatást. Debütáló anyagnak nem rossz, a klasszikus power metal szerelmesei zabálni fogják a lemezt, de bízok benne, hogy a második matéria már jóval komolyabbra (avagy éppen komolytalanabbra) fog sikerülni!

Basically Chris Bowes is well-known as the frontman and band-leader of the funny Scottish pirate troop, Alestorm and if you’ve met him alive even only once, you know he’s a very jocund guy. On the board of Alestorm they often listen to classic power metal, we can feel that in their songs, so it wasn’t surprising for me when the first news appeared about Chris founding a fantasy power metal band, called Gloryhammer. I thought this project will be also a jocund one, especially after seeing their name, the promo video and the photos – although the fact that Chris chose the Swiss (or partly Hungarian?) Thomas Laszlo Winkler (Emerald) as main vocalist, showed a more serious direction. In my opinion the general aspect became far too serious, but I’ll explain this later.
The debut album of Gloryhammer was released in March, 2013 via Napalm Records entitled Tales from the Kingdom of Fife. To complete the epic power metal music, high wizard Chris (he plays only keyboards here) wrote a fictive, fantasy story with historical roots. Kingdom of Fife was an ancient Pictish and later Scottish tiny state on the eastern shores of modern Scotland, Dundee was/is a city on the northern border of this kingdom and the other geographical locations appearing in the lyrics exist in Scotland, too. But the story-telling lyrics describe a fantasy world. Its concept is quite typical: the dark sorcerer (here he’s called Zargothrax) subdues the mighty kingdom (Fife here) and pillages its capital (Dundee now) with the help of evil forces and creatures and enslaves the beautiful princess. Then a hero comes (he’s Angus McFife in this story) who – with the help of other heroes (like knights of Crail), creatures (dragons, good wizards, gods) and magical artefacts (“Hammer of Glory”, “Amulet of Justice”) – beats darkness, rescues his beloved one and restores the order of the world.
So there’s nothing new in the story and unfortunately the much awaited humour also doesn’t really spice the lyrics; the only relatively funny moment is that the unicorns serve the evil in the story, but it’s also explained in The Unicorn Invasion of Dundee: only the sorcerer’s dark spell make them to do this. Although the topic is absolutely typical, what’s about the music? Fortunately there are more positive things here: the keyboard themes are bombastic and elevated (I can strongly feel the Alestorm link in some parts), the guitars play catchy, strong speed riffs and the entire atmosphere is raised by strings, brasses and acoustic guitars giving a bit medieval-like influence. Winkler’s vocals are genial, the choirs are pleasant and in the last, long track, The Epic Rage of Furious Thunder we can hear some nice female vocals, too. I also don’t have ground for complaint about the tempo: there are also a hymnic intro (Anstruther’s Dark Prophecy); fast, smashing tracks (Angus McFife, Beneath Cowdenbeath, Magic Dragon); headbanging mid-tempo (Quest for the Hammer of Glory, Hail to Crail) and soft, melancholic song (Silent Tears of Frozen Princess) on the album.
Of course all of these don’t mean that Gloryhammer invented something new in the scene of sword-waving–dragon-killing heroic metal; they only use the instruments from the armoury of this genre very well. And this is not a problem, but I expected more from this material: more fun, more unique topic and musically more medieval influences. Not a bad debut material, the fanatics of classic power metal will love the album, but I hope that the second album will be much more serious (or even more jocund)!
