A török (isztambuli) Gürz története még 2006-ban kezdődött, de 2010-2011 tájáig nem nagyon adtak magukról életjelet. Mint aránylag fiatal csapat, részben még saját stílusukat keresik, most megjelent első EP-jük leginkább az Ensiferum által fémjelzett hősi folk metal vonalba sorolható, de már jó néhány egyedi, kifejezetten törökös/orientális íz is felfedezhető a zenéjükben, ahogy enyhe progresszív hatás is. Dalszövegeik pedig egyértelműen új témát képviselnek a népies metal berkein belül: török népmesék, belső-ázsiai és közel-keleti mondák és a türk pogányság elemei képezik a dalok alapját.
A debütáló négyszámos, nem egészen negyedórás kislemezt egy rövid, keleties folk intró, a By the Sacred Stone nyitja, mely után a Göç című pörgős, epikus tétel robban az arcunkba. Nagyszerű dal, kitűnő billentyűtémával operál, nagyon jók a tiszta kórusok is és a technikás melodeathes riffek is tetszenek. A Storm Avenger lassabb akusztikus-népies intróval indul, de pár pillanattal később az előzőhöz hasonló erővel pörög fel. Talán a hörgés kicsit túlontúl háttérbe van szorítva, ahogy a refrént éneklő kórus is a gitárokhoz képest. A billentyűk váltottan hol epikus, hol orientális dallamot játszanak, a gitárszóló pedig kifejezetten progresszív. A fájóan rövid EP-t a címadó Sons of Earth and Sky zárja klasszikus heroikus ízzel. Epikus, fejrázós tétel, sok instrumentális résszel és melodikusabb tiszta kórussal, menetelős, törzsi jellegű dobjátéka miatt még talán filmzenének is elmenne.
A fenti pozitívumokat tovább növeli a nagyszerű grafika is. Talán a vokálok keverésére lehet egyedül panasz, de így is nagyon erős debütanyagról van szó! Jó hír, hogy az EP a csapat honlapjáról ingyenesen letölthető és az is, hogy valamikor a nyár folyamán hazánkba látogatnak egy koncert erejéig a Niburta társaságában!

ENGLISH VERSION:
The Turkish Gürz from Istanbul was founded in 2006 but they didn’t show so much sign of life until around 2010-2011. As a relatively young group, partly they are searching their own style; their first EP – which was released recently – mostly fits the heroic folk metal genre, hallmarked by Ensiferum, but we can also find more unique, really Turkish/oriental tastes in their music as well as some progressive influences. And the lyrics are about absolutely new topics in folk metal scene: the bases of the songs are Turkish folk tales, Inner Asian and Middle Eastern myths and the Turkic paganism.
The four-song- and nearly 15-minute-long debut EP is opened by a short, oriental folk intro, By the Sacred Stone, and after it a fast, epic track, Göç cannons into our faces. It’s an amazing song with excellent keyboard theme, the clean choirs are very good, too and I also like the technical melodeath riffs. Storm Avenger begins with a slower acoustic-folkish intro, but after a few moments, it becomes faster with the power of the previous track. Maybe the growls and the chorus-singing choirs are too effaced by the guitars. The keyboards play altering epic and oriental melodies and the guitar solo is really progressive. The painfully short EP is ended by the title-song, Sons of Earth and Sky which has a classic heroic atmosphere. It’s an epic, headbanging track with many instrumental parts and melodic clean choirs; even it could be a movie soundtrack because of its marching, tribal-like drum theme.
The positive things above are headed with a great artwork, too. Maybe I only have cause of complaint for the mixing of the vocals, but it’s a very strong debut material! There are some good news: this EP is available for free download from the band’s website and during this summer, they’ll give a gig with Niburta in Hungary!
