Az 1993-as alakulás és a 1997-es debüt Glory To The Brave óta ez már a hetedik sorlemeze a metal vérkeringésbe új erőt és lendületet hozó Hammerfallnak. A tavalyi, exkluzívnak nevezhető, Masterpieces címmel megjelent, a nagy ősöket és hősöket felidéző feldolgozásalbum után a kalpácsosok ezúttal tíz (plusz egy) vadonatúj dallal jelentkeztek. Ez a Magnus Rosén helyére 2007-ben visszatért eredeti bőgős, Fredrik Larsson és a The Poodles-ból tavaly érkezett új gitáros, Pontus Norgren ilyen formában történő bemutatkozása. A borító és a design Sam Didier és Thomas Ewerhard, a hangzás és a keverés pedig Charlie Bauerfeind munkája.
Helyenként galoppozós, változatos énektémákat felvonultató, kicsit induló hangulatú, igaz metal nóta a nyitó Any Means Necessary. Akkordozós, melankolikus keretbe foglalt középtempós a Life Is Now szellős verzével, kellemes gitármelódiákkal és dallamos refrénnel. Hasonló tempójú a kicsit döngölősebb Punish And Enslave, mely tulajdonképpen extrák nélküli, de jól felépített, tipikus HM/HF nóta jófajta, énekeltetős kórusokkal. Teátrális, mesterkélt, belezős PC játékok hangulatát hozó hátborzongatással indul és zárul a Legion, mely egyébként lendületes, együtténeklős, zenei része pedig rögtön szólóval érkezik. Kiemelendő a szólók közül az ikergitáros rész. Orgonajátékkal kezdődő és azt színként később is elővezető akusztikus ballada a Between Two Worlds. Korábbi tapasztalatokból már tudhatjuk, hogy a srácok elég jó lassú nótákat tudnak írni, s bár ez sem rossz, hozzám csak bizonyos hangulatomban tudott közel kerülni. A bevezető riff után puska csőre rántásának hangja fokozza a hangulatot a szellős verzéjű, villázós-bólogatós, fülbemászó refrénű Hallowed Be My Name-ben, melynek szólója dallamos, végjátékában pedig visszatér a puska effekt, ezúttal egy lövéssel megkoronázva.
Kicsit meglepődtem, hogy egy tempós, középtájt kicsit lassabb, instrumentális tételbe, egyfajta fergeteges szólóorgiába, a Something For The Ages-bebotlottam a lemez közepén. Megkockáztatom, hogy a lemez legjobb szólói, gitárdallamai szerepelnek ebben a dalban. Átfutott az agyamon, hogy lehet, hogy érdemes lett volna őket kevésbé ütős nótákba beépíteni inkább… Számomra kissé Accept ízű témával nyit a címadó, No Sacrifice, No Victory, a tempó itt is mérsékelt, a szóló pedig tetszetős, hangulatfokozó. Dob, majd rövid gitárrígatás vezeti be a szaggatott verzéjű Bring The Hammer Down-t, melynek kétlábgépes refrénje nagyívű dallamokra épül, a dal közepén pedig basszusszólóból startol a kicsit kapkodósan induló, ízes gitárszóló. A One Of A Kind Oscarnak a régi harcos társsal, Strömbladdal közös szerzeménye, ennek megfelelően egy tipikus Hammerfall nóta, mely egészen magával ragadja az embert, főleg, hogy talán ennek a legemlékezetesebb a refrénje. Középrésze visszafogott, már-már merengős, szólója szerintem sajnos talán picit gyengébb az elvárhatónál. A lemezt záró My Sharona a csapattól már megszokott, ezúttal The Knack feldolgozás, melynek eredetije egy pop dal, mely 30 éve vezette a slágerlistákat. Bár nem rossz a dal, az eredeti ismerete nélkül, e verzió alapján nem tűnik zenetörténeti alapműnek. Még a HF előadásában is inkább hard rock, mint metal, monotonitását pedig egyébként ízes szólója sem oldja fel.
Nálam az első két Hammerfall lemez alapmű, bármikor szívesen veszem elő őket és üvöltöm együtt Joacimmal a zseniális dallamokat. A Renegade-től azonban lelkesedésem visszaesett, úgy éreztem, kicsit visszaesett a színvonal. Minden albumon akadnak jófajta metal slágerek, de nem olyan kiegyensúlyozott a helyzet, mint anno. Be kell, valljam, az új lemezt is kicsit kétkedve vártam, de egyúttal reménykedtem is, hátha újra… De úgy tűnt, nem. Első hallásra eléggé lelombozódtam, szinte semmi nem ragadt meg bennem a dalokból és ezt igen rossz előjelnek véltem. Aztán átrágtam párszor az anyagot és fel kellett ismernem értékeit, akaratlanul is meg kellett jegyeznem dallamait. Bár ez már nem az a kalapács, mely anno először lecsapott rám, még most is súlyos, és így, pár hallgatás után már biztos vagyok abban, hogy négy-öt – ha nem is azonnal ható – HF sláger van a CD-n, és hogy érdemes lesz elmenni április 12-én a PeCsá-ba, megnézni az új felállást a tavaly méregerős lemezzel jelentkező Sabaton társaságában.

Since their 1993 formation and 1997 debut „Glory to the Brave” this is the seventh full-length of HAMMERFALL, the band that gave the Metal circulation new power and impetus. After last year’s „Masterpiece”, which can be regarded as a sort of exclusive stuff including cover versions summoning the great ancestors and heroes, the hammer men came up with ten (plus one) new tracks this time. This is actually the debuting of the returning original bassist Fredrik Larsson (replacing Magnus Rosén in 2007), and the guitarist coming from THE POODLES Pontus Norgren. The cover art and design was made by Sam Didier and Thomas Ewerhard, while the sound and mixing by Charlie Bauerfeind.
The opener Any Means Necessary is a here and there galloping true Metal track, which includes varied vocals, and a bit of marching mood. Life is Now is mid-paced, melancholic song with chords, with a lighter verse, pleasant guitar melodies and melodic chorus. The bit more pounding Punish and Enslave has a similar tempo, which actually has no extra things in it, still it’s a good HM/HF song with a nice, sing-along chorus part. Legion starts and ends with spine-chilling themes reminiscent of theatrical, dandified, gory PC games, and the track is itself is dynamic, mandatory-to-sing-along-with, and the musical part opens with a solo. Of the solos, the twin guitar part is outstanding. Between Two Worlds is an acoustic ballad with organ play at the beginning and with some colouring with the same effect. Based on previous experiences, we know that the guys could write quite good calmer tracks, and this isn’t bad either, yet it can get closer to me in certain moods only. In the light-versed, headbanging Hallowed by my Name, after the opening riff, the clicking sound of loading a gun increases the mood, the solo is melodic, and at the end the gun sound returns, this time together with a shot.
Something for the Ages in the middle of the record was a bit surprising being faster, with a slower theme in the middle, and instrumental, and it’s actually a sort of solo orgy. I would also say that these are the best solos and guitar melodies of the record. I even thought that maybe these solos should have been included in tracks that are less killer….
To me, the title track opens with a bit of ACCEPTesque theme. Here the tempo is also more modest, and the solo’s cool and adds something to the mood. The double-bass chorus of Bring the Hammer Down, introduced by drums then a short guitar crying, is based on vast melodies, and the tasty solo, sounding a bit rushed at the beginning comes out of the bass solo in the middle of the track. One of a Kind was composed by Oscar together with his old fellow warrior, Strömblad, thus this is a typical HAMMERFALL song that takes the listener, mainly due to the fact that this tracks includes the most memorable chorus. The middle part is a bit modest, but the solo is, unfortunately, a bit weaker than expected. The closing My Sharona, as we are used to it by now, is a cover, this time of THE KNACK the original of which is a pop song leading the charts 30 ago. Although it’s not bad, having not heard the original this version does not sound a milestone in music history. Even performed by HAMMERFALL this seems to be rather hard rock than Metal, and the monotonous nature of the track isn”t eased either by the otherwise tasty solo.
To me, the first two HAMMERFALL records are mandatory works, and I’m ready for them any time, screaming along with Joacim the great melodies. Starting from „Renegate”, however, my interest has decreased, I felt that the standard got lower. There are nice Metal hits on every album but the situation is far less balanced than it was back then. And I have to admit too that I was waiting this record with great anticipation, and also hoping they maybe… But it seems they didn’t. At first listen, I was rather sad because nothing memorable came my way and that was a real bad omen. Then, after a few more spins, I started to notice the values of the material and the melodies. Although it’s not that hammer that stroke me back then, it’s still heavy, and I’m sure there are 4-5 hit songs – not necessarily working at first listen – on the CD, and it’ll worth going to their gig on 12 April together with SABATON who released a really strong record last year.
