A klasszikus metal gyökerekkel (Maiden, Sabbath Priest) rendelkező, 98-ban még Iliad néven alapított ausztrál melodikus metal csapat az előző lemezekhez a hangját adó Lord Tim egyéb elfoglaltságai miatt ezen az albumon új énekessel jelentkezik. Rövid ideig az Eyefear és ex-Pegazus torok Danny Cecati is próbált velük, de végül neki sem jutott elég ideje az Iliumra, így kerülhetett a csapatba a korábban a legendás Riotban, majd a Masterplan legutóbbi albumán is éneklő, rutinos Mike DiMeo. Az ő révén került később az anyag Dániába Tommy Hansenhez, aki a keverésért és maszterért felelt, a hangzás ennek köszönhetően rendben is van.
Jófajta gitármelódiákkal indul, és azok köré épül a tempós Mothcaste. Akkordbontós lassú témára játszott, igen hangulatos szólócska nyitja a középtempós Hibernal Thaw-t, melynek refrénje lendületes, kétlábgépes. Zakatolós, billentyűs betétje és második szólója figyelemre méltó.
Itt-ott kissé disszonánsnak ható dal a Tar Pit, mely összességében talán a leggyengébb szerzemény a lemezen, még úgy is, hogy a dal végén hangsúlyosabb szerepet kapó, belassulós, refrénszerű rész kimondottan tetszik. Az Omnipaedia riffelősebb, középtempós nóta egy középtájra beillesztett keleties hangulatú és egy dalt záró hosszú, jól megkomponált szólóval.
A saját intró után már-már punkosan kattogó tempóban vágtat a később bólogatósra váltó Xerophyte, melynek újfent a zárása a legjobb. Stílusosan keleties dallamokat hoz a Nubia Awakes, melyben a már megszokott módon az instrumentális részeké a főszerep. A CD egyik legjobb dala a sodró kétlábgépre épülő Ageless Decay, mely tempójával és izgalmas basszusfutamaival kicsit a korai Helloween-t jutatta eszembe. Az Eocene Dawning egy billentyű centrikusabb, epikus nóta, a Fragmented Glory pedig egy, a címadóhoz hasonló stílusban és minőségben fogant darab. Zakatolósabb, riffelősebb, a refrénre – főleg dob és basszus tekintetében – kissé felpörgő tétel a The Neo-Mortician. A jobbak közül való energikus, lendületes dal a The Little Witch Of Madagascar, amit követően egy több mint 7 perces lassabb és gyorsabb témák váltakozására épülő, elég jó érzékkel összerakott, sok melódiával megfűszerezett, összetett eposz, az Idolatry zárja a lemezt.
Érdekes lemez az Ageless Decay. Szinte minden tényező megvan rajta ahhoz, hogy sikeres legyen. Kitűnő hangszeres megoldások, jó dalvázak, élvezetes instrumentális részek, és egy kiváló hangú, tapasztalt énekes. A hangzás jó, a dalok felépítésével sincsenek gondok, valami azonban mégis hiányzik. Ez pedig a fogósság, mely nélkül a dalok nem robbannak, nem ragadnak bennem, nem ragadnak magukkal. Pedig az ilyen zenéknél ez nálam – és gyanítom, a műfaj szerelmeseinél is – alapvető elvárás.
Érdekes, hogy pont ezzel van gond, ugyanis egy ilyen rutinos toroktól igazán emlékezetes témákat várna az ember, főleg az után, hogy a zenekar szerint friss levegőt és extra dinamikát hozott a csapatba. Sajnos az ének viszonylagos szürkesége miatt némiképp olyan, mintha instrumentális lemezt hallgatnék, viszonylag kevés fogódzóval. Kár érte.

That classic metal rooted (Maiden, Sabbath, Priest) Australian band founded in ’98 on the name Iliad is returning with a new singer on this album because of Lord Tim’s other stuffs. For a short period the Eyefear and ex-Pegasus throat Danny Cecati practiced with them, but at the end he also didn’t had enogh time for Ilium, so that’s how the legendary Riot singer, then Masterplan singer, the accomplished Mike DiMeo came into the band. Through him later the footage got to Denmark to Tommy Hansen who did mixing and the mastering, thank’s to this the sounding is fine.
With nice guitar melodies starts and around them builds the hasty Mothcaste. On an accordish slow theme a really moody solo opens the mid-tempoed Hibernal Thaw, which has a breezy, doublebassed refrain. It’s keyboard inlay and it’s second solo are notable. Sometimes a bit dissonent song is Tar Pit, which on the whole is the weakest song on the album, despite that I like the articular, slow, refrainish part at the end of the song. Omnipedia is a riffing, mid-tempo song with an oriental solo at it’s middle and another finely composed solo at the end.After it’s own intro Xerophyte rides nearly on a punkish speed then changes to a nodding tempo, and once again it’s closeing is the best. Stylishly oriental melodies are brought by Nubia Awakes, where commonly the instrumental part is the main act. One of the CD’s best songs is the drifting, double bassed Ageless Decay, which whit it’s tempo and bass runs reminds me of early Helloween. Eocene Dawning is a more key centered, epic song, and Fragmented Glory is similar to the album’s title giver song in it’s style and quality. A more rhythmic, more riffing, on the refrain – mostly on the drums and the bass – a bit quickening title is The Neo-Mortician. From the better energetic, dynamic songs comes The Little Witch of Madagascar, then the more than 7 minutes long Idolatry closes the album, which is built upon the changeing of slower and faster themes and which is a finely composed, melody filled, complex epic.
Interesting album is the Ageless Decay. Nearly all of the considerations are there to be succesful. Excellent instrumental solutions, good songstructures, amusing instrumental parts, and a prominent voiced, experienced singer. The sound is good, neither there is a problem with the structure of the songs, but something’s still missing. And it’s the catchyness, witch without the songs will not blow, do not adheres in my mind or fascinates me. But at such music for me – I suspect for other fans of the genre too – this is essential.
It’s interesting that there’s a problem with this, since from a such accomplished throat one would expect really memorable themes, mostly after the band said that he brought fresh air and extra dynamics into the band. Sadly because of the vocals’ tediousness it’s somewhat like I’m listening to an instrumental album with relatively few handholds.
