Stílus: Progressive Atmospheric Death Metal

Ismét egy olyan újonc csapat debütáló anyagát vehetem górcső alá, amelynek a stílusmeghatározásával gondjaim adódtak. Egyrészt a kiadó által körvonalazott progressive black/death metal nem igazán állja meg a helyét, mert black metalt még nyomokban is nehéz találni a Deserted Soul-on (esetleg symphonic blacket néhol), másrészt a progressive death metalról legtöbbeknek mondjuk a Death vagy az Atheist ugrik be, de itt a zene egyikre sem hasonlít. A csapat zenéjének alapja valóban a death metal, amely olyan stílusokkal fuzionál, mint a klasszikus progresszív metal, a melodikus death metal, de helyenként tartalmaz melodic doom-os és metalcore-os elemeket is. Ez már önmagában is érdekes, de eleinte azért fenntartásokkal kezeltem a dolgot, tekintve, hogy ez az egyéves csapat bemutatkozó anyaga, így a végeredmény ilyenkor könnyen lehet széteső. A Deserted Soul esetén azonban nem ez a helyzet.
A csapat zenéje ugyanis kiforrott, és hangzásvilága valóban egyedinek számít a mai metaldömpingben. Legalábbis már régen volt olyan, hogy egy lemezen egy unalmas pillanatot se találjak, ráadásul úgy, hogy a legrövidebb számuk is 6 perc feletti (az introt nem számolva). A kezdő Darkening Horizon hallgatásakor ugyan még csak azt tudtam, hogy hangulatos, atmoszferikus zenét várhatok, de az I Am című számmal bebizonyosodott, hogy a számírási képességeiket sem kell véka alá rejteniük. Talán a legmozgalmasabb tétel az egész lemezen, szinte minden stílus felbukkan benne, mégis egységes. Említettem, hogy a progresszív metal erős hatásként említhető a csapat játékán, ezalatt pedig nem csupán a komplex dalszerkezeteket, és a tört ütemeket kell érteni, hanem a klasszikus progresszív metal hangulatát is. Érdekes például, amikor van egy borongós melodic death/doom rész, amely után egy Dream Theater/Zero Hour hangulatú billentyűs téma következik, ezután egy tiszta vokál, és így tovább, mégis, egyszer sem éreztem, hogy bármelyik rész kilógna a dal egészéből. Sok témáról egyébként eszembe jutott még a korai Amorphis, illetve az Eternal Tears of Sorrow is, néhány témáról pedig a hazai Dying Wish is beugrott. Kiemelném még az album egyik csúcspontját, ami a címadó tétel refrénje, ami annyira el lett találva, hogy szinte hátborzongató, David Sandvik frontembernek pedig a tiszta hangja is rendben van, és ezt itt meg is tudja mutatni.
Persze ki lehetne még ragadni momentumokat, de ami nagyszerű az In Grief munkásságában, hogy az egész album magas színvonalon teljesít. A lemez minden részét szinte teljesen maguk alkották, a frontember keverte és vette fel az anyagot, és csak a masterelést, meg a CD kinézetét bízták másra. Merész vállalkozás volt úgy felvenni egy nagylemezt, hogy a csapat nem ismert zenészekből áll, alig egy éves, ráadásul ebben a felállásban – közben volt egy doboscsere – csak 2008. októbere óta zenélnek. Merész, de sikeres, ami azt is mutatja, hogy ez az anyag már rögtön a Bombworksnél jött ki. Próbáltam szigorú lenni velük, hogy ne bízzák el magukat, de 9 pontnál kevesebbet akkor sem tudnék adni nekik, az In Grief nálam már megkapta az „év újonca” titulust.

In Grief is another newcomer with a musical style that is hard to categorize. The label’s promotional paper also didn’t help me because it said that their genre is progressive black/death metal which is not correct in many ways. Firstly, I can’t feel the presence of black metal here (there are parts that could have been influenced by symphonic black though). Secondly, when we say ‘progressive death metal’ we mostly think that it could be similar to Death or Atheist or bands like that, but In Grief’s music is really different. The base of their music is death metal though, but with many other influences such as classic progressive metal, melodic death metal, doom metal or metalcore. It sounds interesting but I knew that complexity and diversity is not everything, the album should be consistent and well-written According to the information that this band only exists since last year and this is their first release ever, I realized that I should lower my expectations. But now I know, I underestimated this band.
Their debut ‘Deserted Soul’ is a mature, unique album. It’s not boring for a single moment, even though their shortest song is over 6 minutes (if we don’t count the intro). The starter ‘Darkening Horizon’ sets the atmosphere and the sequel ‘I Am’ shows us that they are really good at songwriting. Maybe this is the most exciting track on this record, it contains many music genres but still consistent. As I mentioned above, the influence of progressive metal is strong and not just because of the complex structures and irregular beats, at some moments the atmosphere is similar to the feeling of the classic progressive metal. It’s quite exciting when after a gloomy melodic death/doom part comes a melody with a keyboard theme with a feeling similar to Dream Theatre’s/Zero Hour’s, which is followed by a clean vocal part and so on. And every single part fits into the song. Beside these two prog metaller acts, some moments reminded me some other bands too, such as the old Amorphis, Eternal Tears of Sorrow and Dying Wish. If I should pick a highlight from this album than I would choose the chorus of the self-titled ‘Deserted Soul’. It’s wonderful and eerie at the same time and David Sandvik shows us that his clean voice is really good, he should use it more often.
Of course there are many many outstanding moments on this record, but the most important is that the whole album is of high quality. In addition, almost the whole full-length was self-made including the mixing and the producing, only the mastering and the artwork was done by an outsider. It was a risky thing that a young band featuring unknown musicians starts with recording a full-length (with a fresh line-up, the „old” drummer was replaced in October 2008.) but it worked well, Bombworks signed them and this debut was released by them. I tried to be more strict with them because I don’t want them getting complacent, but I couldn’t. And if anybody asks me about the top bands of 2009: In Grief is the newcomer of the year.
