Úgy kaptam a CD-t a főszerkesztőtől, hogy a Death egykori fenoménjének, Chuck Schuldinernek a Control Denied nevű projektben elkövetett muzsikájához hasonlót fogok hallani. És valóban valami hasonlóról van szó. A kiadó Kanada progresszív metal titánjaiként említi őket egy beharangozóban, és ez elég helytálló is. Legalábbis a hangszeres teljesítményeket tekintve. A csapat még a 90-es évek végén alakult, első lemezük 2000-ben jelent meg egy kis kiadónál, a második, 2002-es Dead Or Dreaming? című anyaguk azonban már a Century Mediánál látott napvilágot, s már akkoriban olyan bandákkal játszottak, mint a Dying Fetus, a Kataklysm vagy a Hate Eternal. Durva névsor. Főleg zeneileg. Azóta egy színpadon zúzhattak már többek között a Megadeth-el, az Arch Enemy-vel, az Opeth-el, de a Dream Theaterrel is.
Ez az új anyag, mely ötödik a sorban, a zenekar első, egyetlen koncepció köré épülő lemeze, s azt kell mondjam, hogy jól felépített, jól megszerkesztett anyagról van szó. Változatos, izgalmas a zene, van itt minden: heavy metal, black metal, progresszív elemek, és death-be hajló hörgések is. Hogy ez így kuszának hangzik? Nem kell aggódni, nem az. Jól használják fel és építik be az egyes stíluselemeket a szöveg és a hangulat igényei szerint. A sztori, ahogy a cím is mutatja, nem túl vidám. Tim Roth gitáros/énekesnek előbb két barátját, majd édesapját ragadta el a rák, ez adta az inspirációt és a fájdalmas, olykor dühös érzelmi töltést.
A CD-t nyitó Prelude To Woe egy szívhanggal induló, akusztikus gitárral és szintivel készült, egészen kellemes bevezető. Írom ezt annak fényében, hogy mára szinte teljesen intróellenessé váltam. A következő dal, a Tides Of Blood metalos sikollyal és gyors témával indul, majd kb. fél perc alatt felvonultatja, hogy milyen típusú, jellegű énekvariációkra számíthatunk a következő szűk negyven percben. Lesz King Diamondot idéző, üvegrepesztő magasságú hang, klasszikus, középtartományban mozgó dallamos verzió, black-es károgás, és mélyről feltörő, de nem túl durva hörgés is. Persze amilyen változatosak az énektémák, hasonlóan sokszínűek a hangszeres részek is. Már ebben a számban felbukkan két igazán frappáns gitárszóló, melyeket sok hasonló követ a többi tételben is.
A Spent Years Of Regret egy szaggatósabb riffel nyitó, tempós darálást és középtempós, dallamos refrént is felvonultató opusz. A klasszikus metal alapokon nyugvó, instrumentális Symptoms egyfajta átvezető tétel, de akár az azt követő Diagnosis Terminal intrójának is tekinthetjük. Ez utóbbi egy tempós, sok helyen black-es zúzda, progos tekerésekkel fűszerezve. A dal összességében nem kiemelkedő. Vagy legalábbis nekem nem igazán jön be. Valahogy mintha nem akarna összeállni, a refrén viszont annyira rendben van, hogy képes eladni, magával vinni az egész nótát.
Szimfonikus hatású billentyűvel és zongorával alapoz a lassú, kiváló ének- és vokálteljesítményeket felmutató The Incurable Tragedy I, mely üde színfoltja az egyébként lendületes, harapós lemeznek. Az Indignation egy újabb gyors szerzemény, a várakozásoknak megfelelően változatos énektémákkal, kiváló refrénnel, ikerszólóval, súlyos málházással és géppuskaropogás-szerű lábdobbal. Talán a legjobb dal a CD-n az akusztikus gitárral nyitó Time Immemorial, mely melodikus black-es témával robban be, hörgéssel fűszerez és természetesen nagyon ütős a refrénje. Akkordbontogatós gitárjátékra épül a filmzenei hatású és érzésvilágú The Incurable Tragedy II, melyben érdemes odafigyelni a basszusszólamra is. Sztakkátós riffelés és még a refrénen is végig vonuló száguldás jellemzi az A Black Light Ending-et. Érdekes a középrészében a szóló és a kíséretek játéka, egymásra épülése. Ez az anyag legdurvább nótája. A One Funeral Hymn For Three az előző dalhoz hasonlóan szaggatott gitártémákat és progos tekeréseket váltogat szélvész tempókkal. A lemez és a címadó trilógia befejezője, a The Incurable Tragedy III egy újabb lassú, instrumentális tétel, gitárhősökre jellemző dalfelépítéssel és szólóorgiával, a végén a tragédia bekövetkeztét jelző pittyegő majd sípoló hanggal.
Egységes, keretbe foglalt, a három a többitől eltérő felépítésű, hangvételű és hangszerelésű dalnak köszönhetően igen lélegző, az egysíkúvá válás lehetőségét is elkerülő anyag a The Incurable Tragedy. Sok lendületes téma, emlékezetes és/vagy virtuóz szólók, kiváló énekhangok, dallamok és egyéb vokális megoldások teszik színessé, végig izgalmassá. Csak gratulálni lehet a srácoknak, akik szeptember végétől Észak-Amerikában turkálnak majd az Iced Earth-el. Nem érdemtelenül.

I got the CD from the editor in chief that I will listen to a music similar to the one of Chuck Schuldiner’s (the ex-genius of the Death) project called Control Denied. And it is really similar. The label mentions them in a recommendation as the titans of the progressive metal of Canada and this is quite relevant, at least when you consider their instrumental performance. The band was founded in the late ’90s. Their first album came out in 200 at a small label, however, their second one, the „Dead or Dreaming” was released by the Century Media, and they shared the stage with such bands as Dying Fetus, Kataklysm or Hate Eternal. It is a brutal list, mainly in music. Since then they played together with Megadeth, Arch Enemy, Opeth or Dream Theater.
This new material being the fifth in sequence is their first album based on only one conception, and I must say, it is a well-built and well-organised material. The music is various, exciting, and there is everything: heavy metal, black metal, progressive elements and howls bending to death metal. Does it sound as a mess? You need not worry, it is not. They use and build in the given style elements according to the demand of the lyrics and the feeling. The story, as it is shown by the title, is not so happy. Two friends of Tim Roth (guitar/vocal) and his father were all died in cancer; this gave the inspiration and the painful, sometimes angry feeling.
The first track of the album „Prelude To Woe” starts with the sound of a heart and is made with an acoustic guitar and a keyboard; it is quite a pleasant intro. I write it in the light of the fact that I am getting more and more fed up with intros. The next song „Tides Of Blood” starts with a metal-taste scream and a fast theme, and it aligns in ca. half a minute what kind of vocal variations should be expected in the next less than 40 minutes. There will be an extremely high voice, evoking King Diamond, a classic, melodic version in the middle region, black-like shrieks and a not-so-brutal growl coming from deep. Of course, the vocal themes are similarly various as the instrumental parts. Even in this track there are two striking guitar solos, followed by many similar ones in the other tracks.
The „Spent Years Of Regret” opens with a more staccato riff with a fast grinding and a middle-paced melodic refrain. The „Symptoms” based on classic metal is an instrumental, a kind of bridge track, but it can be considered as the intro of „Diagnosis Terminal”, which is a fast song, spiced with black-like grind and progressive-like fast parts. To sum, the song is not outstanding, at least it is not really for me. It seems not to be a whole, but the refrain is so OK, that it is able to sell and carry the whole song.
„The Incurable Tragedy I” is based on a symphonic keyboard and piano part and gives perfect main and backing vocals; it is a pearl in the dashing, biting album. „Indignation” is again a faster one, according to the expectations with various vocal themes, perfect refrain, a twin-solo, heavy parts and a machine gun-like bass drum. Maybe the best song on the album is the „Time Immemorial”, which opens with acoustic guitar, explodes in with a black-like theme, spiced with growl and has, of course, a brilliant refrain. „The Incurable Tragedy II” is based on a guitar play with chord resolution, and has an effect and feeling similar than a music of a film, and you should take a look at the bass melody. Staccato riffs and rushing tempo even in the refrain are characteristic to the „A Black Light Ending”. The play of the solo and accompaniment and their building on each other is interesting. This is the rudest song of the album. „One Funeral Hymn For Three” alternates the staccato guitar themes and progressive-like fast parts similarly to the previous song with an extremely fast tempo. The last track of the album and the title trilogy „The Incurable Tragedy III” is again a slower, instrumental song with a song construction and solo orgy characteristic to guitar heroes, and with a beeping sound indicating the tragedy.
„The Incurable Tragedy is a solid, framed, breathing owing to the three songs being different in construction, intonation and instrumentation than the others material which avoids even the possibility of getting monotone. Many lilting themes, memorable and/or virtuoso solos, perfect vocal voices, melodies and other vocalic solutions make it colourful and exciting until the very end. We can only congratulate to the guys, who will have a tour in North-America with Iced Earth. It is not undeserved.
