Az Arvid Tjelta (ének), Espen Haaland (dob), Jonas Hovland (ének), Ken Ove G. Johansen (basszusgitár), Magnus Loining (gitár) felállású, klasszikus metalcore elemekkel dolgozó norvég banda 2002-ben alakult. A következő évben megjelent első demojuk „My Demise” címmel, majd némi stílusváltás és csapatépítés után 2006-ban az „Unleash The Power” CD, és tavaly egy hatszámos EP jött ki a mostani anyag munkacímén, mintegy előzetesként. Hatásként olyan zenekarokat sorolnak fel, mint a Killswitch Engage, Pantera, Korn vagy épp a Bullet For My Valentine. A hangzással semmi gond, és a főbb ötletvonalak is jók, bár meg kell mondani őszintén, hogy hiába uraik hangszereiknek, néhol jellegtelen, semmitmondó témák kapcsolódnak egymáshoz, és ez így csak egy egyszerűen egy sokadik metalcore próbálkozás.
A Fraction Of Time dal egyből dinamikusabb zúzással indít, amit ezután egyszer csak megtör egy teljesen nem odaillő hangulat, egy idegen érzés (többször is visszatér a számban). Nevezhetnénk épp refrénnek, de ebben a téma témára pakolásban csak egy a sok közül. Nem rossz az ötlet, a technikai részek is ki vannak dolgozva, viszont harmatgyenge a szerkezet felépítése, komolyabb munka nem áll mögötte.
A Pitch Black Eyes már más téma. Itt sokkal kicsiszoltabb a vonalvezetés, finomabb árnyalatokkal ugyanúgy játszanak, mint a törésekkel vagy épp a súlyosabb részekkel. Néhol az ének elüt az alaptól, és gyenge, dinamikátlan, a hangulat egész mást kívánna meg. A gitárok és a ritmusszekció pontos játéka itt sokkal kerekebb történetet mutat.
Vastagabb hangzással indít a My Inner Demons. Súlyos részek váltják egymást, jól fekvő hangsúlyozások, mindez az énekkel van feldobva. Viszont van benne egy iszonyat sablontéma, technikás játékot imitálva… ez bezavar a képbe, nem így kellene itt lennie, ennél többre is képesebb lett volna szerintem a banda. A szám vége egyszerűen cseng le, semmi utóérzést nem okoz. Nem rossz, de a vége semmitmondó lesz.
A Choose Your End ötletes, pusztító riffekkel tépi fel a valóságra a szemedet, kidolgozottság, egyedi íz, karakteres vonások jellemzik. Ezen az úton kellene kalandozni, bár itt is van egy-két gyengébb betét, nem annyira zavaró, mint a My Inner Demons-ban. Az erőteljes gitárjáték és a mély ének, a mindent szétromboló dob és basszus együttese itt kiválóan mutatja meg magát.
A Path Of Damnation is egy hasonló szám, kivéve talán azt, hogy itt nincs egyetlen zavaró elem sem, igaz, a dal sem bővelkedik egyediségben, inkább átlagosnak mondanám magát a koncepciót, ez viszont ott van a helyén. Megmozgatja az ember fejét a zene, az biztos. Korrekt verzék vonulnak fel, minden hang a helyén, egy egész számot hallhatunk végre a lemezen. Kár, hogy ez az utolsó track…
Összességében ez a lemez valahol ötletes elemekkel játszik, de sokszor marad inkább átlagos, mintsem kiemelkedő, hiszen egy-két számnál több egyedit nem nagyon találunk a korongon. Kitartás és kísérletezés, azután majd alakul. A műfaj kedvelői úgyis beszerzik, bár ebből nagyrészt tizenkettő egy tucat…

This Norwegian classic metalcore band (lineup: Arvid Tjelta – vocals, Espen Haaland – drums, Jonas Hovland – vocals, Ken Ove G. Johansen – bass, Magnus Loining – guitars) was formed in 2002. In the next year came their first demo „My Demise”, and then, after a genre switch and some changes in the line-up, „Unleash The Power” in 2006, and finally a six-track EP with the same title as the current release in the previous year, as a sort of preliminary. Among their influences they mention bands like Killswitch Engage, Pantera, Korn, and Bullet For My Vallentine. There’s nothing wrong with the sound, and the main ideas are also good, but it should be admitted that despite their mastery of their instruments the themes are at times dull and featureless, so it’s just on of the countless metalcore attempts.
Fraction of Time starts off with a dynamic crushing which is then broken by an absolutely not fitting atmosphere, alien feeling (it returns again and again in this track). We could call it a chorus, but actually it’s just one of the many themes. The idea is not bad, technically it’s also worked out finely, but the whole structure is wanting, there”s not much work invested in it.
Pitch Black Eyes is another matter. Here the main lines are much more developed; they play with the sophisticated shades as well as with the breakdowns and heavier parts. Sometimes the vocals differ from the bases and gets weak, powerless, the whole atmosphere would require something else. The guitars and the precise rhythm work show a much more mature image.
My Inner Demons starts with a thicker sound. One heavy part comes after another, the weights are put nicely, and all this backed with good vocals. But there is a pathetic cliché, imitating technical performance… this disturbs the song, should not be there, I think the band is capable of a lot more. The ending is simple, bringing about no feeling of any sort. Not bad, but the end of it has not point.
Failed Creation is based on staccato rhythm and has though, tight play; the vocal also fits nicely, though the structure is not dynamically flawless. The more technical linings are all finely worked out here, although I would have left out that something that is not quite melodic, not even singing…
Choose Your End opens your eyes to reality with smart, devastating riffs; it’s worked out, unique and characteristic. This is the way they should follow, even though there are weaker parts here and there, but they are not that annoying as in My Inner Dreams. The combo of powerful guitars, deep vocals and ruthless drums / bass is really kick-ass here.
Path of Damnation is a similar track except, maybe, that there is no disturbing element, although the song is not abundant of uniqueness. The whole conception is rather average, but at least adequate. It makes your head move, for sure. Correct verses, every sound at its place, we can eventually hear a track in its own right. Too bad it’s the last track…
In sum, this album is full with good ideas, but is mostly average instead of being great, since there are no more than one or two unique tracks on the disc. Tenacity and experimenting, and it will get better. Fans of the genre will get it all the same, but these bands are so much similar…
