A szibériai Omszkból származó orosz Last Wail egy tipikusnak mondható csata metal (folk melodeath metal) zenekar a nagy klasszikusok (pl.

Az első dal a Warrior of Justice in medias res induló hörgős szöveggel, fennkölt billentyűdallammal és speedes szólóval.

ENGLISH VERSION:

The Russian Last Wail from the Siberian Omsk can be called a typical battle metal (folk melodeath metal) band on the trail of the big classic ones (e.g. Ensiferum, Wintersun). The main inspiration of the group is the ancient Scandinavian world; their lyrics are about the ancient universal values; glory, heroism, bravery, generosity, etc., so those ideas which are mostly disappearing nowadays. But in one thing they differ from the most heroic metal bands, actually in the person of the vocalist, because in the songs (written in English) the brutal death metal growls dominate, growled by a beautiful young lady!

The demo album of the band had been released in 2010, entitled The Tale Of Endless Night, then – after signing a deal with Stygian Crypt – they released their first full-length album with the same title in 2011. With the bonus track it contains 10 pieces and it’s not too long, 35 minutes. The fans of the genre shouldn’t wait for many surprises; it’s a classic heroic/battle metal material with folkish and epic themes, mostly created by synths, heavy but melodic riffs, fast bass drums and brutal female growls.

The cd is framed by acoustic intro and outro in traditional way; these are really pleasant tracks with acoustic guitars and violas. The first song is Warrior of Justice with in medias res started growling, elevated keyboard theme and a speed metal-like solo. Revenge begins with a folk tune but it quickly turns into fast deathish smashing with good bass theme and grinding drums. The album is continued with similar tempo but with more keyboard parts in Fighting the Dark, then comes a soft folkish interlude titled Mystery. Merciless returns with the previous rage, with epic and sometimes atmospheric melodies. The seventh track is the title-piece, The Tale Of Endless Night. Its atmosphere is darker than the previous songs but the next The Doomed in Despair even overstrides it a bit. We can’t say that the Siberian guys are one of the happy rejoicing folk metal bands, but I miss some softer songs on the album!  By the way the artwork fits well this relatively dark, warlike atmosphere. After the already mentioned outro we can hear the strong cover of the band’s one foregoer’s, Ensiferum’s old opus, Windrider as a bonus number.

The debut material of the group is enjoyable, but not too various, it follows the well-beaten path of the big names. The guitar themes are hard, but not really technical and sometimes the growls seem to be a bit strained. As the first album of the band, it’s a good beginning, they have potential, but I hope, the style of their next album will be more mature, more unique.
