Funeral doom metalban utazik a számomra eleddig ismeretlen Longing For Dawn nevezetű zenekar. A kanadai ötös még 2002-ben alakult és most idén jelent meg harmadik alkotásuk a „Between Elation and Despair”. Már a stílusból következtetni lehet egyes dolgokra. Például, hogy nem a sebességről szól ez a korong a másik meg, (gondolom, nem árulok el nagy titkot vele), hogy a lemez 52 perces hossza alatt mindössze négy dal csendül fel. Az előítéleteket félretéve, számomra nem is az a fontos, hogy ezek a dolgok meglegyenek vagy, hogy megvannak-e, hanem, hogy van-e hangulata az adott muzsikának. Na, a kanadai srácokkal ebből a szempontból nincs probléma. Természetesen a szokványos sémákra építkeznek, ebből tevődik össze a muzsika nagy része, de mégis van hangulata a produkciónak. A nóták hosszú jellegéből fakadóan számos hangulati elem egészíti ki a zenei vázat. Ez köszönhető Frederic Arbour-nak, aki különböző effektekkel, zajokkal, misztikus más dimenzióból jövő hangokkal, sötét hangulattal ruházza fel a dalokat. Ennek szellemében a gitárok is nagyon mélyre hangolva hömpölyögnek a nótákban, és Stefan Laroche hörgése sem lóg ki a lemezről.
Ha végighallgatom a lemezt, nem az fordul meg a fejemben, hogy valami szikéhez nyúlva adjam át magam a túlvilágnak, hanem a természet örökléte nyílik meg elméim előtt. A táj szinte mozdulatlan képként elevenedik meg előttem. A dalok lassú vánszorgása kísér végig hegyek és felhők felett. Erre utal a csodálatosan szépre sikerült borító is. Azonban, hogy ne csak jót említsek, egy-két emlékezetesebb téma még elfért volna a lemezen, mert néha eléggé egyformák a témák. Ezen kívül azonban nincsen baj a koronggal. Mindenképp egybe érdemes végighallgatni, úgy, hogy közben az ember becsukva a szemét kizár mindenfajta külső zajt ebből a világból. Ez a fajta zene még mindig csak egy szűk rétegnek szól, és azt hiszem, ez így is van rendjén.

ENGLISH VERSION:
The Canadian band called Longing For Dawn – formerly unknown by me – plays funeral doom metal. They consist of five members. They were formed in 2002, and „Between Elation and Despair”, their third album, was released this year now. There are some things which result from their style. For example, it’s not a big secret to know that this CD is not about fast tempo songs. It’s also not surprising that during the 52 minutes of the tracks, we can hear only four songs. Setting aside my preconceptions, these features aren’t that important for me, the key factor is the atmosphere of the music. And as for this, the Canadian guys do a great job. The music is built of the usual structures, but still, the music has a great atmosphere. The musical frame is completed by many mood changing elements, which is not unusual for songs of that length: Frederic Arbour peppers the songs with special effects, noises, mystical sounds coming from another dimension, and with a dark mood. The guitars are very deeply pitched in the songs, the growl od Stefal Laroche fits the CD as well.
If I hear the album through, my feelings are not about sacrificing my life to another world by a knife. I rather feel that the eternal beauty of nature opens in my mind. The landscape appears as a still image in front of me. The slow wandering of the songs follows me above the hills and clouds. The beautiful cover also supports this feeling. To mention a complaint, in my opinion the themes are not various enough, they are sometimes too similar on the album. But apart from this, there’s no problem. It’s worthy to listen to the songs as a whole, with closed eyes and ignoring all noises from the external world. This kind of music is still for a small fan base, and that’s right I think.
