A svájci Lunatica alapjait még 1998-ban rakta le a billentyűs, Alex és gitáros, Sandro. Fáradhatatlan kutatásuk eredményeként 2000-ben találtak rá Andreára, akivel új szintre kerülhettek a dalok, s akinek hangja megkoronázta az Atlantis-t, a debütalbumot, mely felülmúlta a várakozásokat és Svájc metal élvonalába repítette a csapatot. A második lemeznél (Fables & Dreams), mely japán és svájci listás eredményeket is hozott, már Sascha Paeth is segédkezett. A harmadik, The Edge Of Infinity című album pedig, a rádiós és tévés szerepléseknek is köszönhetően tovább növelte a csapat európai és japán rajongótáborát. Ezután egy gitároscsere, majd egy új, a Napalm Records-szal kötött szerződés következett, melynek itt a gyümölcse, a negyedik Lunatica album New Shores címmel, az ex-Asia-s John Payne vendégszereplésével, elbűvölő dallamokkal, sokszínű, mégis egységes dalcsokorral, szimfonikus utazásokkal és egy új szintre emelt hangzással.
Leheletnyi gitárral, majd dob/basszus összjátékkal indít (érdekes lemezkezdés) a csendes, szellős basszus alapú verzét, kicsit diszkós hangulatú refrént hozó, szerintem nem túl acélos indításnak minősíthető, címadó New Shore. Zongorával és vonósokkal nyit a Two Dreamers. A verzéje ennek is könnyedebb, a refrén azonban sodró, kétlábas fülbemászás, kiváló, a dalt magasba emelő dallamokkal. A szólót, illetve annak dalban betöltött szerepét nem igazán értem, így kicsit fölöslegesnek érzem, figyelemre méltó viszont a záró refrénben a basszusjáték. Elektronikus puttyogásra, bugyogásra és szaggatott gitárriffre épül a verze a The Incredibles-ben. Refrénje ragadós, melodikus, egyszerre gitárcentrikus és szimfonikus hatású, a fokozott elektronikus jelenléttel együtt is húzó dal. Tipikusnak nevezhető metal témával, megoldással indul az egyszerű alapokon nyugvó, kicsit egzotikus dallamú The Chosen Ones. A refrén szintihangzása kicsit space-es, a billentyűszóló igencsak rendben van, a gitárszólót azonban kicsit jellegtelennek érzem. Újra egy elektronikát fokozottan használó dal, az Into The Dissonance következik. Végig kiemelkedő benne a gitárjáték, úgy a középrészben lévő szaggatott riff vagy az ének alá játszott futamok, mint a „hivatalos” gitárszóló. Nagyot dob nálam a számomra talán picit sok digitális hangot hozó nótán a refrén, mely dinamikus, jól vokalizált, kicsit a 80-as évek popját idéző dallamú.
Főleg billentyűre és szaggatott, sztakkátós gitárra épül a The Day The Falcon Dies, szólója kétlábgépes, melódiái sajnos nem kiemelkedőek. Viszonylag könnyed, váltott férfi és női énekre épülő szomorkás rock ballada a Farewell My Love. Vokáljai és együtténeklései jól felépítettek, a háttérben latinos hangulatú akusztikus gitár hallható. Jól eltalált, akusztikus gitárra és vonósokra alapozó, soft rock/pop sláger a Heart Of A Lion, melynek rádiós, tévés játszása nagyobb sikerhez segíthetné a zenekart. Energikus, sulykolós riffel nyit a My Hardest Walk, verzéje szellősebb, refrénje szaggatott, modern hangvételű, érdekes benne a szimfonikus színekkel díszített csilingelős cyber rész. Finom vokálokkal átszőtt, melankolikus, zongorás (szintén rádióba való) ballada a Winds Of Heaven. Nem kifejezetten metal nóta, de érdemes odafigyelni a háttérben építkező gitárszólamra. Elektro ritmusokra, zongorára épülő, szimfonikus festést és refrénjében torzított gitárt is hozó lassú szám a How Did It Come To This. Hangulata és refrénje ennek az egyik legátütőbb, talán ez a lemez legmodernebb hangszerelésű és legemlékezetesebb dala. Kiváló zárás.
Érdekes a kiadó által használt szimfonikus, melodikus metal kifejezés és a zenekarral kapcsolatban biztosan sokakban felmerülő Nightwish párhuzam. Minden dalban jelen van ugyan több-kevesebb szimfonikus megoldás, de tempóit tekintve sokkal visszafogottabb anyagról beszélhetünk és elég gyakori az elektronikus, a numetal poposabb bandáinál megismert szinti és ritmushasználat is. A New Shores dallamai többségükben könnyen emészthetőek, refrénjei fülbemászók, gyakran bújnak meg a háttérben színes, élvezetes gitármelódiák és a sokszor izgalmas basszusjátékra is érdemes odafigyelni. Kiválóan hangszerelt, jó hangzású lemezről van szó, ezért mindenkinek bátran ajánlhatom, aki vonzódik az énekesnős csapatokhoz, és nyitott szívvel és füllel áll a zenéhez. The Swiss Lunatica’s bases are founded in 1998 by synth player Alex and guitarist Sandro. As a result of their tireless effort in 2000 they found Andrea, who with the songs made it to a whole new level, and who’s voice enthroned Atlantis, their debut album, which surpassed the expectations and shoot them into the frontline of the Swiss metal scene. On the second album (Fables & Dreams), which made it to Japanese and Swiss boards too, Sascha Paeth also gave a helping hand. The third one, The Edge of Infinity, thanks to the radio and tv acts, raised their Europeian and Japanese fanbase. After that a guitarist change and then a contract with Napalm Records came, and the fruit of that is the fourth Lunatica album titled New Shores, with the ex-Asia member John Payne’s guest acts, with fascinating melodies, interesting but still solid pack of songs, with symphonic trips and a new level of sounding.
Pale guitar guitars, then drums/bass teamwork starts (interesting beginning) the silent album titleing song called New Shore, with light bass based verse and in my opinion it’s not a really firm starting of the album. Two Dreamers begins with piano and strings. It’s verse is fluent also, but the refrain is whirling, double legedd catchyness with excellent melodies that raises the song so high. I don’t realy understand the solo or it’s purpose in the song, I think it’s a bit needless, but the bass at the end of the song is notable. The verse in The Incredibles is built upon electronic noises and broken guitar riffs. It’s refrain is sticky, melodic, it is guitar centered and symphonic at the same time, with the increased presence of electronics it is still hard song. The simple, bit exotic song, The Chosen Ones starts with a typical metal theme. The chorus’s synth sound is spacey a bit, the synth solo is fine, but I think the guitar solo is somewhat too plain. Then again here comes a song that uses more electronics and it’s called Into the Dissonance. The guitars are salient in the whole song, they are great at the broken parts in the middle of the song, or the runs under the singing, and the „official” solo is nice too. For me the chorus gives some plus points but the electronics are too much for me, still the song is dynamic, finely vocalized, and it’s melodies reminds me of 80’s pop music.
The Day the Falcon Dies is mostly built upon synths and broken, staccato guitars. It’s solo is doublebassed but the melodies are not the best. Farewell my Love is relatively fluent, it is sad rock ballad with chengeing female and male vocals. It’s vocal themes and co-singings are well structured, in the background a „latin-ish” acoustic guiatar play can be heard. Heart of a Lion is a nice soft rock/pop hit, it’s based on acoustic guitars and strings, I believe if they’d play it on the radio or the tv it would help the band to get a greater success. With an energetic, paddleing riff opens My Hardest Walk, it’s verse is more airy, the refrain is broken, intoned in a modern way, the symphonic, cyber part of it is interesting. Windso of Heaven is finely vocalized, melancholic, piano based ballad (and it should be played on the radio too). Not an exact metal song but it worths to listen to the solo part in the background. How it Come to This is based on electro rhytms and piano, but it brings symphonic paint and in the refrain some distorted guitars too. It’s mood and refrain is one of the bigges hit, maybe it’s the most modern and memorable. Excellent ending.
An arresting thing is the sypmhonic, melodic metal expression that is used by their publisher and another one is the Nightwish parallelism. There may be a lot of symphonic issue in some songs, but if we look at tempos of the songs we can talk about a much more moderate matter, and there are a lot of electronic, synth and rhytm usage of some pop-like numetal bands. Melodies of New Shores are mainly easy to digest, it’s refrains are catchy, there are often exciting, amusing guitar melodies and it’s worth to give attention to the also exciting bass. It is an exceedingly instrumentationed, fine sounding album, so I gallantly advise it to anyone who loves bands with female singers and if his/her heart and ear is opened to any kind of music.
