Eddig még nem ismertem a Man Must Die zenéjét és kicsit félve kezdtem bele az album meghallgatásába, ugyanis a death metal/grindcore besorolást kapták. Ez nem is lenne gond, de manapság már annyi ilyen jellegű banda van, hogy Dunát lehetne rekeszteni velük. A kiadó által küldött promolapon többek közt azt is írták, hogy meglepően gyors és beteg modern death metált játszanak, na ekkor már volt egy kis remény a zenekar felé. A banda Glasgow-ból származik és az angliai Grindstone Studios-ban Scott Atkins segítségével vették fel az új lemezt. Bevallom még nem hallottam róla, de ő segédkezett többek közt a Sylosis felvételeinél is. Mindenesetre nagyon ütős hangzást tudtak összehozni, a gitárok masszívan szólnak, a dob kifejezetten erőteljes és a hörgés teljeséggel belemászik az arcunkba. Ez persze Joe McGlynn énekesnek is nagyban köszönhető. Az albumborító szintén elnyerte a tetszésem, amin egy rongyokban levő megfonnyadt csontváz fogja kétségbeesett arcát, a háttérben pedig vörös égbolt alatt várromok emelkednek a tömegsír fölé. Bár a villanypóznaszerű árbócok lényegét nem értem, de valami jelentőségük biztos van.
A nyitódal, ami egyben az album címadója is rövid szaggatással indul, majd jön a brutális tempó és a kegyetlen hörgés. Ezt váltják a technikás riffek, s egy lassú dobpergős rész közben pihenhet az agyunk, de a rövid bevágott beszédek után újra jön a szaggatás. Ez a szám egyből megadja a lemez hangulatát egyszerűen brutális és élvezhető. A további számok nagy része is hasonló felépítésű. Megtalálhatóak benne a dobhártyát megviselő gyors tempók, sikítások, valamint a középtempós technikás riffekből sincs híján, sőt néha még dallamokat is felfedezhetünk. A további meghatározó momentumok a zenéjükben: az erőteljes szaggatások, amik mindenkit fejrázásra késztetnek, valamint a számok többségének közepe tájékán általában lassú, rövid kiállások pihentetik a hallgatót. Szólók szempontjából kiemelném az It Comes In Threes és a Hide The Knives című számokat, ugyanis mind a kettőben hangulatos, a kilencvenes évekre jellemző metál szólókat hallhatunk. Nem vártam volna, hogy ennyire jól tudják ötvözni ezt a két stílust. A What I Cant Take Back pedig, egy lassú instrumentális sejtelmes hangulatú szám, amiben az akusztikus és a lágyan betorzított gitárok játsszák a főszerepet. Ebben a számban is érzek egy kis kilencvenes évek amerikai metál hangulatot, de lehet, hogy ez csak számomra jött le. A záródal (Survival Of The Sickest) jó választás volt befejezésként, mivel igazi végzet hangulata van. Sejtelmesen kezdődik és így is ér véget, közte pedig a gyors dara vontatott zúzássá válik.
Az album meghallgatása után elégedetten és kissé felpörögve kapcsoltam ki a lejátszót. Majd örömmel zároltam, hogy ebben a stílusban egy ilyen feltörekvő banda is tud kifejezetten jó anyagot kiadni a kezei közül. Bár néha olyan érzésem támadt, hogy egy láncfűrésszel hasítják szét a fejem, vagy mintha egy hullát darabolnának a mészárszéken, szóval brutális lemezt hoztak össze. Ajánlom mindenkinek, aki szereti a Cannibal Corpse, Nile, Dying Fetus féle death metalt, szerintem nem fog csalódni.

ENGLISH VERSION:
I didn’t know the music of Man Must Die before, and I was a bit doubtful when I started to listen to this album, since they were cathegorised as death metal/grindcore. That is not a problem itself, but there are tons of bands in this genre… On the promo site of Relapse Records, we can also read that it’s a surprisingly fast, sick and modern death metal – I started to have some better hopes. The band is from Glasgow, the new album was recorded in Grindstone Studios (England), with help of Scott Atkins. I haven’t heard about him before, but he also gave help when Sylosis recorded their stuff. Anyway, it is a great sounding, the guitars sound massively, the drums are powerful, the growl totally smashes our face, thanks to the voice of the singer, Joe McGlynn. I really liked the cover, too, where a decayed corpse in worn-out clothes can be seen, holding his face with despair, while in the background, ruined castles are there with mass graves under the red horizon. I couldn’t figure out what that pole-like things are exactly, but they might have some importancy, too.
The first song, which has the same title as the album, starts with a short staccato, then comes the brutal tempo and a merciless growl. It’s followed by the technically great riffs, then the rhythmic, slow play of the drums can be heard, we can get relieved there, but again, staccato is coming after some added speeches. This song immediately sets the mood of the album, it’s simply brutal and enjoyable. The other songs are built similarly. We can find fast tempos which totally wears out our ears, screaming. Also it teems with mid tempo technically great riffs, moreover, there are melodic sections, too. Other determining moments in their music are powerful staccato sections, compelling us to headbanging; the short and slow protrusions during the middle of the songs are relieving the audience. As for the solos, „It comes in threes” and „Hide the knives” should be mentioned, there are some ’90s style metal solos with great atmosphere. It’s unexpected for me that they could mix the two styles so well. „What I Can’t Take Back” is a slow instrumental song with a mysterious mood, acoustic and softly distorted guitars are the most prominent moments there. I can feel some ’90s American metal atmosphere here again, although it might be only my opinion. „Survival of the sickest” is a good choice for a closing song, it has a really evilk mood. It starts and finishes mysteriously, in the middle section, the fast whirling is changed to slow trashing.
After listening to the album, I was satisfied and switched on as I stopped the player. I was happy to assess that a relatively new band can also produce such a good album. Although I felt that there’s a chainsaw in my head, or there’s a corpse just being chopped in the butchery, so this album is really brutal. I can recommend this album to everybody, those who like Cannibal Corpse, Nile or Dying Fetus style of death metal, will not disappoing.
