Több mint húsz év után dupla digipack kiadvánnyal jelentkezik 2009-ben az 1982-ben alapított holland metal legenda, a Martyr. Az egyik CD-n a visszatérő Fear EP, a másikon pedig a kultikus debüt album, a For The Univers remasterelt változata kapott helyet. A nem túlságosan tetszetős és infódús, de minőségi kivitelű kiadvány rajongóbarát módon, egy normál CD áráért kerül forgalomba, így a célközönség valószínűleg nagy örömmel fogadja majd.
A For The Univers az új master eredményeképpen sem lett mai hangzású lemez. A hangszerek egyenkénti hangzása, a keverési arányok és a dinamikai egyenetlenségek benne maradtak az anyagban, így teljesen egyértelmű, hogy az a nyolcvanas évekből, egészen pontosan 1985-ből származik. Megkockáztatom, még újrakeverve sem szól jobban, mint a korabeli magyar metal lemezek és bár igazából a dalok sem ütik meg akkori nagy kedvenceim (Accept, Helloween, Maiden) szintjét, nagyobb baj nincs velük, értem, miért lett kultikus az anyag Hollandiában.
A két CD felállása között énekesben és dobosban van eltérés, a három bárdista ugyanaz most is, a zene azonban – bár mindkettő dallamos metal – elég sokat változott az elmúlt évek alatt. A Univers a 80-as években megszokott, ma már klasszikusnak nevezett gyorsabb, énektémáiban magasabb tartományokban mozgó dallamos heavy metal album, a Fear pedig egy modernebb, mélyebb hangra, sötétebb hangulatokra épülő anyag.
Bólogatós riffekre és kicsit sejtelmes gitárrígatásra épül a The Most Evil, vontatott refrénje egészen rendben van.
Szaggatottabb témák, az előzőnél hajszállal nagyobb lendület, elnyújtott refrén, kis Megadeth utánérzés jellemzi az EP címadó Fear-t.
Olyan riffre épít a Different Kind Of Rain, melybe, vagy inkább igen hasonló variánsaiba már nem egy helyen belebotlottam. Tördeléseivel, sikáival, vontatott énektémáival, sikolyaival azonban még így is a CD legjobb dala.
Döngölős, itt-ott Metallica felhangokkal büszkélkedő, vánszorgó, kicsit energiaszegény dal a Take Me Home.
Az anyag leggyorsabb témáját és talán a legtöbb gitárdallamot hozó tétele az Eaten Alive, olykor monoton riffeléssel, máskor sikolyokkal, a refrénben picit újra Lars-ékat megidézve.
Az hamar kiderült, hogy igen jó hangú, dallamérzéktől sem mentes új énekest sikerült csatasorba állítani. Első hallgatásra azonban ezzel együtt is igen jellegtelennek, középszerűnek és színtelennek tűnt a zene. Őszintén megvallva, ha egyszerű érdeklődőként találkoztam volna az anyaggal, akkor valószínűleg nem kap második esélyt. Pedig mint az utóbb kiderült, nem is olyan rossz. Az biztos, hogy nem korszakalkotó és szerfelett izgalmasnak sem nevezhető a cucc, hiszen viszonylag egyszerű, jobbára panelekből építkező, középtempós vagy lassabb dalok alkotják. A dalok viszonylag monotonok, emiatt és a deja vu-k miatt elég hamar ismerősnek hatnak. Sokadik hallgatásra egészen kellemes hallgatnivalóvá válik, de egyik irányba sem lóg ki a ma már igen népes mezőnyből. A hangzás tulajdonképpen rendben van, de semmi eget verő, csak a basszus puffogása bántja olykor a fülemet.
Végeredményben azt mondhatom, hogy zenéjében, vidámabb hangulatában számomra a hajdani debüt a szerethetőbb anyag, de ma, a bombasztikus hangzások korában már nehéz egy régi, ciripelve megszólaló anyagba beleszeretni. A Universe kb. 7 pont lenne, az aktuális Fear pedig 5.

ENGLISH VERSION:
The legendary Martyr from The Netherlands (formed in 1982) is back after more than 20 years with a double digipak release. The first disc contains the new Fear EP, the other one contains the remastered version of the cultic debut, For the Universe. This not particularly good-looking, neither too informative but quality release is going to be sold in a fan-friendly way for the price of a single album, so the target audience will most likely welcome it with open arms.
Even the new master was unable to supply For the Universe with an appropriate sound in today’s world. The separated sounds of the instruments, the mixing rates, and the small dynamical flaws still remain, so it’s pretty obvious that it originates from the 80’s (from 1985, actually). I would risk the statement that even being remastered, it doesn’t sound any better than Hungarian metal stuff from that age neither do the songs reach the level of my big favourites of that time (Accept, Helloween, Iron Maiden). Anyway, there are no outstanding problems with the material, I understand why it became legendary in The Netherlands. There are two lineup differences between the original debut and the remaster: the vocalist and the drummer were replaced. Even though the three guitarists are the same, the music changed a lot through the past years – it remained melodic metal, however. For the Universe is a usual, faster, melodic metal album with high-pitched vocals, something you would call classic metal from the 80’s. On the other hand, Fear is a modern piece of music built on lower sounds and darker moods.
The Most Evil is built on headbanging riffs and somewhat mystic guitar-crying and its slow refrain is quite okay. Staccato music, slightly more dynamism than in the previous song, elongated refrain, a little Megadeth feeling; these characterise the eponymous Fear. Different Kind of Rain is built on a riff into which (or into the quite similar variants of which) I have already stumbled many times. It is still the best song on the disc with its breakings, slow vocals, and screams. Take Me Home is a pounding, slowly crawling song with some Metallica-overtones and not enough energy. Eaten Alive brings the disc’s fastest tempo and most guitar melodies. It contains some monotonous riffing here, some screams there and in the refrain it again reminds us of Metallica.
The singer soon proved to be a very good choice, he both has a very good voice and nice sense of melody. However, after the fist listening, the music appeared to be characterless, mediocre, and colourless. To tell the truth, if I would have listened to the album because of my personal interests, it would never have gotten a second chance. Even though later it proved to be not that wrong. It’s not something great or fantastic, that’s for sure, neither can it be called exciting, since it is made up of relatively simple, middle-tempo or slower songs built of panels. Thanks to their monotonity and the deja vus, they quite soon get to feel familiar. After lots of listenings it becomes a pleasant thing to hear but it’s nothing more than any other band in the overcrowded scene of this time. The sound is okay, nothing special except that the pounding of the bass hurts my ears sometimes.
All in all, I can say that because of its music and happier mood, the debut is more of my liking, but in today”s world of bombastic sounds, it is hard to love a disc which sounds like the whirling of autumn leaves. For the Universe would get 7, Fear would get 5.
