Az észt Metsatöll (jelentése lényegében „farkas”) 1999-ben alakult és 2004 óta, mikor első nagylemezüket kiadták, minden évben megjelentetnek valamit (EP, DVD, split, koncertalbum, nagylemez), mégsem igazán ismertek Magyarországon, és Nyugat-Európában is inkább csak a folk metal színtér második-harmadik vonalához számítják őket. Pedig 2010-ben és 2011-ben is elég erős nagylemezzel jelentkeztek (Äio és Ulg). Talán az észt nyelv az, ami miatt csak hazájukban illetve Finnországban népszerűek igazán, kiadójuk is finn, a Spinefarm Records (Ensiferum, Kalmah…). Magyarországon eddig csak egyszer jártak, még 2010-ben a Finntroll előzenekaraként, 2013-ban pedig a Korpiklaanit kísérve ismét Budapesten adnak koncertet (több más hazai és külföldi csapattal együtt) a Folk Farsangon.
Ez az alkalom kiváló okot szolgáltat arra, hogy legutóbbi anyagukat, a 2012-es finnországi Tuska fesztiválon rögzített 10 dalos koncertlemezükről írjak.
A nemes egyszerűséggel Tuska című korong 2012 szeptemberének végén jelent meg és a június 30-i fesztiválkoncert hanganyagát tartalmazza, plusz a bónusz DVD-n a csapat előző két nagylemezéhez készült klipjeit, a fantasztikus Küüt és a régi rajzfilm-animációból készült Vaid Vaprustot is megkapjuk. A koncert célja egyértelműen az utolsó két nagylemez promotálása volt, hiszen a tízből hat dalt az Ulgról, négyet pedig az Äioról játszottak. Koncertalbumról lévén szó, nincs sok értelme a dalokat egyesével elemezgetni. Ezzel szemben érdemes pár szót szentelni a zenekarra: minden daluk észt nyelvű és dalszövegeikhez az észt folklórból és mitológiából merítik témáikat. Ehhez sok észt népi hangszert is felhasználnak (dudák, furulyák, dorombok, citeraszerűségek), a legtöbb hasonló bandától eltérően azonban csak négyen vannak. A népi hangszereket ugyanis a másodgitáros szólaltatja meg, szintén szokatlan módon élőben is, így a gitár szorul a háttérbe. Már ezek alapján is több figyelmet érdemelnének a fura észak-európai srácok, ráadásul négyen is pont elegen vannak ahhoz, hogy kifejezetten egyedi muzsikát csináljanak.
A koncertlemez hangulatos, jó hallgatnivaló és kiváló minőségű, bár szerintem célszerűbb lett volna egy válogatáslemezt kiadni (eddig öt nagylemezük jelent meg) vagy a képi anyaggal együtt egy normál koncertdvd-t (pár dal hivatalos, profi videója látható a Youtube-on is). Amit a rövid anyagról hiányolok, az néhány régebbi szám (például nagy kedvencem, a ’99-es Terast Mis Hangund Me Hinge), de ez a buli és lemez az utóbbi két nagylemez promotálásáról szólt. Remélem, hogy a február 22-i koncerten azért a régebbi nóták közül is jó néhány felcsendül majd, persze az új számok sem hagynak kivetnivalót maguk után! Aki pedig még mindig nem ismeri az észtföldi hordát, az nézzen szépen utánuk, a budapesti fellépésig van még majd’ két hónapja megbarátkozni velük, hogy aztán kórusban skandálhassuk a színpad előtt: „Kivine Maa!”

Metsatöll (euphemism for “wolf”) was founded in 1999 and from 2004 – when they released their first LP – they’ve been releasing materials year by year (EPs, DVDs, splits, live albums, longplayers), but they are still barely known and underrated in both Hungary and Western Europe. In 2010 and in 2011 they released two strong full-length albums (Äio and Ulg). Maybe the Estonian language is the reason that they are popular only in their homeland and in Finland and their label is also Finnish, Spinefarm Records (Ensiferum, Kalmah…). In Hungary they’ve played only once, as supporters of Finntroll in 2010, but in 2013 they’re going to return to Budapest with Korpiklaani and many other bands at “Folk Farsang”.
This event is a good reason to write a short review on their latest material, a 10-track-long live album recorded at Tuska festival, Finland, 2012.
The CD, simply entitled as Tuska was out at the end of September, 2012 and contains the audio material of the show at the festival on June 30th and also the two clips of the previous two full-length albums on the bonus DVD: the fantastic Küü and Vaid Vaprust made of animations of an old cartoon. The goal of this concert was to promote the two latest albums, because they played six tracks from Ulg and four from Äio. It’s a live album, so I don’t think I should analyze the songs one by one. Instead of this, I should write some words about the band: all of their songs are in Estonian and their lyrical topics come from the Estonian folklore and mythology. They use plenty of Estonian ethnic instruments for this (bagpipes, flutes, mouth harps, zither-like stuff), but unlike most of the similar bands, they have only four members. The folk instruments are mostly played by the second guitarist, also on live shows, so the guitar is just a secondary instrument for him. Even for this the strange Northern European guys should deserve more attention but they also create really unique music.
The live album has a good atmosphere, it’s great to listen to it and it’s very good in quality, but I think they should rather release a compilation (they have already five full-length albums) or a normal live DVD with video (some official, professional videos of this gig are already on Youtube). I miss some older songs from the short material (for example my favourite from ’99, Terast Mis Hangund Me Hinge) but this show was to promote their two latest LPs. I hope, they will play many older songs too during the tour in February with Korpiklaani, but I have neither cause of complaint of the new tracks! And if you still don’t know the Estonian horde, check them out, you have around one or one and a half month to become acquainted with them before their European tour and then there you’ll be able to sing along: “Kivine Maa”!
