Mindig is érdekeltek az egzotikus helyekről származó metál zenekarok. Gyorsan lecsaptam tehát a Nervecellre, amelynél nemzetközibb együttest nehéz lenne találni. A dubai (Egyesült Arab Emírségek) székhelyű banda két tagja, Rajeh Khazaal és Rami Mustafa Libanonból ill. Jordániából származik, Barnaby Ribeiro gitáros félig indiai és félig portugál, a dobokat pedig nem más játszotta föl, mint a Psycroctic-os David Haley, aki történetesen ausztrál. Az együttes a promo lapon úgy hirdeti magát, mint „a Közel-Kelet legerősebb metál csapata”. Tekintetbe véve, hogy az izraeliként számon tartott Melechesh már évekkel ezelőtt Hollandiába tette át a székhelyét, a Tangorodrim feloszlott, az Orphaned Land-et pedig nem igazán kedvelem, ez szerintem nem is áll messze az igazságtól. Igen izmosra sikeredett a „Preaching the Venom”.

A lemezen hallható zene méregerős death/thrash ötvözet zeneileg épp a kettő között, az éneket tekintve pedig egyértelműen a death oldalon. Az összegyúrás tulajdonképpen annyira jól sikerült, hogy egyszerre lehet felfedezni a zenében svéd és amerikai death, valamint klasszikus és neothrash hatásokat, sőt, még melodeath harmóniákat, szólókat is. Noha a lemezen vannak gyors részek, nem esnek abba a hibába, hogy végigblastolják az egészet, rengeteg lassulás, középtempós téma is található rajta.

És szerencsére a zúzás mellett egyáltalán nem feledkeztek meg a számírásról sem, számos jól sikerült riff van a lemezen, és noha nem mindegyik nóta lett tökéletes, kifejezetten unalmas nincs köztük (igaz, én az instrumentális – de amúgy teljesen metál – „Ratios”-t kissé túlnyújtottnak találom a maga hat és fél percével). A death / thrash mellett időről időre felbukkannak a zenében keleties hatások, akusztikus témák is, de inkább csak díszítő jellegzetességként. Ezek a témák teljesen jól belesimulnak a dalokba, mivel leginkább a lassabb átkötő részeknél bukkannak föl.

Technikailag az összes zenész jól teljesít, de külön érdemes kiemelni David Haley dobost. Nagyon élvezetes hallgatni a játékát, szépen megpakolta a nótákat díszétesekkel, ahol pedig kell, ott csépelni is tud. A gitárjáték is ötletes; rögtön az első nyitó nótában, a békésen megfér egymás mellett a kimért deathes szaggatás, egy kis hardcore-os breakdown, majd egy ízig-vérig melodeath szóló.

Mindössze két kisebb problémám akad a lemezzel. Az egyik a hangzás. A lemezt a lengyelországi Hertz stúdióban keverték, ahol több Vader, Decapitated és Hate anyag is készült. Ennek ellenére nem lett eget rengető; élvezhető ugyan, de elbírt volna még egy kis polírozást. Főleg a gitárok hangoznak vékonyan, a hangzásuk inkább a ’80-as évek thrashét idézi, az ének pedig ehhez képest túlságosan előre került.

A másik gond, hogy néhány téma túlságosan is erős déja vu-t kelt bennem. A kettes „Vicious Circle Of Bloodshed” nyitó témája annyira ismerős, hogy szinte meg mernék esküdni, hogy hallottam már egy Dew-Scented dalban; a közepén hallható harmónia pedig egy az egyben leköveti a The Wake nevű nem túl híres és mára már feloszlott együttes „Murder One” c. nótájának elejét. De számos példát lehet még említeni; többször is felkaptam a fejem, és próbáltam rájönni, melyik Malevolent Creation (Cannibal Corpse, Carnal Forge, Kreator, Death, sőt, Psycroptic…) dalból lehet ismerős, ami megy éppen.

Ettől eltekintve meglepően erős lett ez az album. Gondoljunk arra is, mennyire nehéz metált művelni arrafelé. Még ha az Emirátusokban jogilag nem is tiltott ilyen zenét játszani (más arab országokban, például Libanonban pár évvel ezelőtt biztosan tudom, hogy az volt), így sem lehet könnyű egy olyan helyen, ahol gyakorlatilag nincs színtér. Ehhez képest sikerült egy olyan lemezt készíteniük, amely amerikai vagy skandináv mércével mérve is abszolút megállja helyét. Remélem, még hallunk róluk.

I’ve always been interested in metal bands coming from exotic lands. So I immediately pounced on Nervecell, compared to which it’s quite difficult to find any formation more international regarding line-up. Two members of the Dubai-based (United Arab Emirates) act, namely Rajeh Khazaal and Rami Mustafa, are coming from Lebanon and Jordan respectively; Barnaby Ribeiro is half-Indian and half-Portuguese, and the drum tracks are played by no one else than David Haley from Psycroptic, who happens to be Australian. On their promo sheet they announce themselves as „the most potential metal outfit in the Middle East”. Taken into account the fact that Melechesh (which is considered to be Israeli) moved to the Netherlands for many years, Tangorodrim split up and that I don’t really like Orphaned Land, in my view this is not very far from the truth. „Preaching the Venom” turns out to be a pretty strong release.

The music is a powerful mixture of thrash and death just in between music-wise and definitely on the death side regarding the vocals. The fusion is actually so successful that you can notice Swedish and American death, classic and neothrash influences, and even some melodeath harmonies and solos at the same time. Although there are fast parts on the release, they don’t commit the mistake of constantly blasting throughout the whole album; there are many slower and mid-paced themes too.

Besides the chugging they fortunately don’t forget about songwriting either. There are many well-done riffs on the album, and although not every song is perfect, none is definitely boring (however, instrumental – but otherwise absolutely metal – track „Ratios” is a bit overplayed for me with its six and a half minute length.) Besides death / thrash, Eastern influences rear up their head time to time, and we can also hear some acoustic themes but only as decorative motifs. These parts fit the songs smoothly, mostly occurring at the slower interlude sections.

Technically speaking all musicians deliver well, but drummer David Haley deserves special mention. It’s a pleasure to listen to his play; he nicely filled the songs with ornaments but can also grind when needed. The guitar work is creative; right in the first song there are severed death staccato, some hardcore breakdown and a to-the-core melodeath solo peacefully put next to one another.

I only have two problems with this release. The first is the sound. It was mixed in Hertz Studio (Poland), where a number of Vader, Decapitated and Hate materials have been mixed; still, this is not groundbreaking. It’s enjoyable but could have borne some more polishing. Especially the guitars sound thin, mostly resembling to the thrash of the ’80s; and compared to that, the vocals got too much in the foreground.

The other problem is that some themes sound too déja vu to me. The opening riff of track two „Vicious Circle Of Bloodshed” is so familiar that I could swear on it that I have already heard it in a Dew-Scented song; and the harmony in the middle of the song just mirrors the beginning of „Murder One” by the not too well-known and already split-up band The Wake. But there are many more examples; I raised my head many times and tried to figure out from which song of Malevolent Creation (Cannibal Corpse, Carnal Forge, Kreator, Death, and even Psycroptic…) can be familiar what is just being played.

Apart from that, this is a surprisingly good album. We should also bear in mind how difficult it is to do metal there. Even if it is not legally forbidden to play such music in the Emirates (I know with certainty that it was in many other Arab countries such as Lebanon some years ago), it still can’t be easy in a country where there is practically no scene. In spite of all that they produced an album that measures up, even by American or Scandinavian standards. I hope to hear more from them.
