A Tale of Haste szövege erős társadalomkritikának tekinthető a modern, rohanó világgal szemben, s zenéje is igen fogós. Of Swords and Axes jöjjön. A férfikórusok és a károgás párosa a régi Ensiferum hangulatát idézi bennem egy kissé. A pörgős Elmore Tempest még inkább a klasszikus hősi folk metal világába visz minket, erős epikus hatásokkal, melyet a még gyorsabb Stormbringers követ nyolcadikként. A The Nexus egy igazán kelta folkos, mandolinos átvezető, melynek atmoszférája a következő dalban, a Beloved Dryad (from the Hollow Woods)-ban is megmarad. Ez a kedvenc tételem a korongon, részben a népi, harmonika-mandolin páros okán, de úgy általában is igen erős, ehhez hasonló dal még fért volna a lemezre! Ezután egy igencsak epikus darab, a hét perces Frozen Outland következik. Szövegét tekintve ez sem egy tipikus folk metal szám, hiszen egyfajta belső őrlődésről, filozofálásról szól. A hosszúnak mondható dal gyorsan végigfut, hiszen elég változatos témák kerültek bele.

ENGLISH VERSION:

After Scandinavia, Germany and Eastern Europe, on the Western part of the continent we can also see the fungating number of folk/pagan metal mongers. After Italian and Spanish bands now I’m looking over the new album of a French group, exactly the new material of NightCreepers, entitled Alpha. This band from Central France wasn’t unknown for me before; I also liked to listen to their album of 2009, Svingeheim, but it was only one of the many average folk metal cds.

After the first major effort, the good Gaulish found their own style, Alpha is a unique combination of the classic heroic folk/battle metal and the Celtic influenced pagan metal. After the epic prologue (Stronghold) we can get to know the foundation of the guild of warriors from an epic pagan metal track (A Guild is Formed), where’s a good folkish taste made by the accordion. All in all it’s great that NightCreepers use keyboard-accordion combination; while most bands give back the accordion parts with synths, here the epic and folkish atmospheres are present in the same time by the two different instruments. The lyrics of Tale of Haste contain a strong criticism of modern, rushing world and its music is very catchy. Then Alpha comes, what we may call the eponymous song of the band. This piece has longer midtempo solo and hard drum beats, but the sound of drums are not the best, I can pick at the quality. The bit symphonic influenced Enter the Lair is the epilogue of the previous track and then Of Swords and Axes comes with its really wrathful lyrics. The couple of male choir and screaming reminds me a bit of the atmosphere of old Ensiferum. The quick Elmore Tempest takes us more into the world of the classic heroic folk metal with strong epic influences, which is followed by the even faster Stormbringers as eighth track. Its short interlude is very catchy with those keyboard theme and lyrics and the chorus with clean vocals is also not bad. The Nexus is a true Celtic folkish interlude with mandolin. Its atmosphere remains in the next song, Beloved Dryad (from the Hollow Woods). This is my favourite track on the cd, partly because of the accordion and mandolin, but as a whole it’s also strong enough, so they should put more similar songs to the album! After this, a very epic number, the 7-minute-long Frozen Outland comes. Lyrically it’s not a typical folk metal track again, it’s about human feelings. This relatively long piece ends quickly, because it has many various themes. As the twelfth track we can hear an epic outro (Path of Glory), but it’s tricky, because the last song is a great bonus one, Les Plaines de Hel from 2011.

Although the screams/grunts are a bit monotonous and the guitar themes are also not too various, but fortunately the folkish, epic and sometimes symphonic themes balance these. The sound of the drums is weak sometimes, but the lyrics are really strong, maybe one or two French track would be great, but I have no ground of complaint because of this. The graphic artwork of the album (created by the band’s keyboardist) is also commendable.
