A Nordheim német neve ellenére a dinamikusan fejlődő észak-amerikai (azon belül is a kanadai) viking/folk metal színtér gyermeke. Míg Latin-Amerika folk(os) zenekarai nem csak az európai zenei világból merítenek, hanem gyakran az őslakos indián kultúrákéból is, addig az észak-amerikaiak leginkább a viking/nordikus világot részesítik előnyben. Ebbe a kategóriába tartozik a québec-i ötösfogat is heroikus, csatametalos és korsólengetős témáival.
A banda 2010-es debütkorongja, mely a Lost In The North címre hallgat, erős Ensiferum, Wintersun, néhol Moonsorrow és Amon Amarth hatásokról tanúskodik. Igyekeznek a műfaj észak-európai atyjainak nyomában haladni, ami elég jól sikerül nekik. A dalszövegek is a nagyok világához illeszkednek, az északi mitológia és fantázia világa, a trollok elleni hősi harcok színtere elevenedik meg a dalokban. A lemezt egyébként a Jean-Francois Dagenais (Kataklysm) maszterelte.
A csaknem háromnegyed órás albumot a címadó intró nyitja, egy tipikus epikus-instrumentális felvezető. A Nightborn abszolút az Ensiferum zenei világát idézi hősi riffjeivel és deathes dobtémáival és ehhez hozzájárul a csatametalos dalszöveg is. A lemezen kétféle vokál meghatározó, a vezető durva ének (károgás és hörgés) és az epikus férfikórus. A Far Away, mely a harmadik helyen szerepel, fülbemászó népies szintetizátortémákkal és gyors lábdobbal operál, szövegvilága a trollok elleni harcban elűzött harcos gondolatait tárja elénk. A negyedik számnak már a címe is magáért beszél: Beer, Metal, Trolls and Vomit! Mint minden átlagos folk metal csapat, bizony a Nordheimnek is megvan saját ivóhimnusza, méghozzá elég erős formában. Témája tipikus, mondhatni sablonos, de mégis fülbemászó, és erőteljes epikus death metal nótáról van szó, ez a lemez legjobb dala! Ezután már komolyabban folytatja a kanadai banda a Promise To The Gods-szal, mely heroikus hangvételű középtempós darab, melyet a gyorsabb, még epikusabb Glorious March követ. Ebben minden megvan, ami egy ilyen címhez illik: menetelős dobtéma, harcias riffelés, kürtzengésre hajazó billentyűk és fennkölt kórusok. A lemez többi dalához képest egyébként aránylag hosszú nótáról van szó. Ezután jön a másik együtténeklős, vidám darab, a Sailing The Drakkar lálálázásaival és harmonika- majd dudaszerű szintivel a viking hajósok életéről. Az eddigi átlagos szövegtémák után az Old Crazy Man-é már jóval egyedibb és érdekesebb. Ez egy egykori dicső harcosról szól, aki öregkorában meséli tetteit egy taverna falai között, de senki nem hisz neki és kinevetik. A dal hangulata itt a Korpiklaani régi zenéjét idézi, mind gitárriffjeiben, mind billentyűs hangszerelését tekintve. A Beyond The Howling North az Észak és az északi tél dicsőítése, talán a korong legepikusabb és fennköltebb tétele, melyet zárásként a Blessing From The Stars követ, mely zeneileg és tematikusan is illeszkedik az előtte lévő számhoz.
Az album grafikája egyszerű, borítója igen vicces söröző drakkaros trolljaival. Debütáló anyagnak szerintem abszolút megfelelő, de még átlagos, néhol sablonos lemez. Vannak erős részei, főként a kórusok és a billentyűtémák, viszont például a hörgésen még van mit edzeni.

Nordheim – despite of its German name – is the child of the dynamically expanding North American (actually Canadian) Viking/folk metal scene. While the Latin American folkish bands don’t only take out of European musical traditions, but often of the Native American ones, the North Americans mostly prefer the Viking/Nordic world. The quintet from Québec strengthens this group with its heroic battle metal and pint-waving themes.
The debut album of the band from 2010, titled Lost In The North, shows strong Ensiferum, Wintersun, and sometimes Moonsorrow and Amon Amarth influences. They try to follow the path of the Northern European fathers of this genre, and they are successful enough. The lyrics also fit the world of the great ones; it evokes the Norse mythology and fantasy, the arena of the glorious fight against the trolls. By the way Jean-Francois Dagenais (Kataklysm) handled the mastering of the album.
It’s nearly 45 minutes long and begins with the self-titled intro which is a typical epic-instrumental prologue. Nightborn absolutely calls up the musical world of Ensiferum with its heroic riffs and deathish beats and it’s strengthened by the battle metal-like lyrics, too. On the whole LP two kinds of vocals are determinant, the lead harsh vocals (screams and grunts) and the epic male choir. Far Away, which is the third track, has catchy synthesizer theme and fast bass beats, its lyrics show us the thoughts of a warrior who were exiled in the war against the trolls. The title of the fourth song speaks for itself: Beer, Metal, Trolls and Vomit! As every average folk metal group, also Nordheim has an own drinking anthem, which is really strong enough. Its topic is typical, we can even call it faceless, but it’s a catchy and strong epic death metal track, the best one of the album! Then the Canadians continue with a more serious song, Promise To The Gods, which is a mid-tempo song with heroic atmosphere, followed by the faster, even more epic Glorious March. In this one there’s everything which is needed by such a title: marching drum theme, warlike riffing, horn sound-like keyboards and elevated choirs. In comparison to the other songs, it’s relatively long one. After this, there comes another sing-along, happy piece, Sailing The Drakkar with its “lalala” parts and accordion- and then bagpipe-like keyboard, about the life of the Viking seafarers. After the previous average lyrical topics, the one in Old Crazy Man is more unique and interesting. It’s about a former glorious warrior, who tells his story in a tavern in his old age, but nobody believes him, just laughs. The song’s atmosphere evokes the old style of Korpiklaani, both with its guitar riffs and with the keyboard instrumentation. Beyond The Howling North is a praise to the North and the Northern winter, maybe the most epic and elevated track on the CD, followed by the final Blessing From The Stars, which fits the previous song in music and topic, too.
The album artwork is simple; its front cover is very funny with the beer-drinking trolls on a drakkar. I think it’s absolutely acceptable as a debut material, but an average, sometimes faceless one yet. It has strong parts, like the choirs and the keyboard themes, but for example they need training in the grunts yet.
