Egy hat éves szünetet leszámítva 1991 óta működik az izraeli Orphaned Land zenekar, akiket manapság az orientális metal, azaz a keleti folk metal megteremtőiként tartunk számon. A zenekar eredetileg progresszív death és doom metalba épített bele már a kezdet kezdetén sok-sok közel-keleti népzenei elemet, mellyel példát mutattak sok fiatalabb zenekarnak. De nem csak e példával jártak elől, hiszen témaválasztásuk is különleges: a három nagy ábrahámi vallás, a zsidó, a muszlim és a keresztény hit ősi történeteit feldolgozva reflektálnak az aktuális politikai helyzetre. Ezzel a közel-keleti problémák békés rendezésének, a népek és vallások közti megbékélés legnagyobb zászlóvivői talán az egész metal világban. Ennek köszönhetően izraeli létük ellenére muzulmánok ezrei, tízezrei rajonganak a zenekarért – miközben hivatalosan ki vannak tiltva a legtöbb muzulmán vallású országból…
A nemes cél eddig négy nagylemezt hozott világra, egy hosszabb kihagyás után legutóbb 2010-ben, The Never Ending Way of ORwarriOR címmel. E koronggal aztán körbeturnézták a világot, hogy a népek testvériségéről és a vallások békés egymás mellett éléséről szóló üzenetüket minél többen meghallhassák. A hosszú turnét követően nekiálltak újabb lemezük megírásának, mely 2013. június 24-én lát napvilágot All Is One címmel!
A cím egyszerű, mondanivalója nyilvánvaló. A szövegek szempontjából semmi újítás nem jellemzi a lemezt, de erre nincs is szükség, az ősi monoteista vallások és a mai realitás bőven rejt lehetőséget magában. Zenei téren azonban komplexebb, mégis könnyebben emészthető, elődeinél érettebb matériáról van szó. Ahogy a zenekarvezető Kobi Farhi mondta, „a zenét csak jobban játsszuk, a koncepciót pedig még erősebbé tettük”. A dalok tömörebbek, rövidebbek lettek, ezzel megkönnyítve feldolgozásukat – a 11 számos All Is One csak két darab 6 percnél hosszabb tételt tartalmaz. Hangszerelése egyszerre jól megszokott, mégis egyedi. A banda által felvonultatott keleti népi hangszerek, mint a dzsümbüs (modernizált török lant/úd), a buzuki, a xilofon illetve a zongora és az akusztikus gitárok mellett 8 tagú török vonós együttes szolgáltatja a hegedű, brácsa és cselló dallamait illetve egy 25 fős énekkar is emeli a hangulatot. A keményebb, doomos témák sajnos visszaszorultak, de pl. a The Simple Man verzéje, a Let The Truce Be Known gitárriffjei vagy a Fail zseniális. Hörgést sajnos szinte egyáltalán nem hallunk e korongon, ellenben a kórusok komoly szerepet kaptak és nagyszerűek. Pörgősebb, „folk metalosabb” témából viszont több van a megszokottnál, kitűnő példa rá az All Is One, a Freedom vagy a Ya Benaye. E dalok témája is inkább szomorkás, de mégsem búsak. Szokás szerint érzelmesebb, szomorúbb hangulatú számokat is tartalmaz a lemez, mint Brother vagy a Children, legkiválóbb közülük azonban a héber–arab–latin nyelvű Through Fire And Water.
A mély mondanivaló, a fülbemászó arab és zsidó népzenei motívumok, a jól elhelyezett himnikus elemek és a letisztult, egyszerűsített, mégis változatos dalszerkezetek az izraeli ötösfogat eddigi legerősebb lemezévé teszik az All Is One-t. Nincsenek felesleges elnyújtások, szükségtelen bonyolítások, helyette érett és erős szólók és melodiák jellemzik a korongot. Egy-két doomos rész szerintem még belefért volna, hiszen azokban is nagyon otthon van a csapat, de szerencsére azok sem tűntek el teljesen.
A friss lemezen túl jó hír még a rajongóknak, hogy október 4-én ismét hazánkba látogatnak az elárvult föld szülöttei, így aki lemaradt róluk 2011 decemberében (mint jómagam is), az pótolhatja, aki pedig ott volt, az megismételheti az élményt!

Orphaned Land from Israel exists since 1991 – they also had a 6-year-long inactive period – and nowadays we call them the founder of oriental metal or Eastern folk metal. Originally they build many Middle Eastern folk music elements in progressive death and doom metal and this became inspirational for many younger bands. However not only this guide was important but also their choice in topics: they answer to the actual political situation covering the ancient stories of the three big Abrahamic religions; the Jewish, the Muslim and the Christian faith. With this in the world of metal they may be the biggest standard-bearers of the peaceful solution of the problems in the Middle East and of the reconciliation between nations and between religions. This is the reason why they have thousands, ten-thousands of Muslim fans despite of being an Israeli group – whilst they are banned from most Islamic countries…
This noble goal gave birth to four full-length albums up to now, last time in 2010 entitled The Never Ending Way of ORwarriOR after a longer rest. With that album they have toured over the world to transmit their message about the brotherhood of nations and the peaceful coexistence of the religions to as many fans as possible. After the long tour they started making of their upcoming album which is out on June 24th, 2013 under the name All Is One!
The title is simple, the message is apparent. There is no innovation in the lyrics but there is no need for it; the ancient monotheistic faiths and the modern reality have enough potential. But on the side of music it is more complex but also easier to digest; it is a more mature material than its predecessors. As band-leader Kobi Farhi said, “The music is just played better and the concepts are made stronger now”. The tracks are briefer, shorter making the digestion easier – the 11-songs-long All Is One contains only two tracks over 6 minutes. Its arrangement is usual and unique at the same time. Besides the eastern folk instruments played by the band-members – cumbus/cümbüş (modernized Turkish lute/oud), bouzouki, glockenspiel and also piano and acoustic guitars – there are violins, violas and cellos played by an 8-piece Turkish stringed instrument group and also a choir with 25 members elevates the atmosphere. Unfortunately the heavier, doom themes are driven back but e.g. the verse of The Simple Man, the guitar riffs of Let The Truce Be Known or the complete Fail are fantastic. Unfortunately there are almost no growls on this album but the choirs play important role and they are awesome. On the other hand there are more themes in faster tempo, in “more folk metalish” style as usual; excellent examples are All Is One, Freedom or Ya Benaye. The topics of these ones are rather sad but they are not gloomy. The album contains gloomier, more emotional tracks, too like Brother and Children but the best one is Through Fire And Water with Hebrew-Arabic-Latin lyrics.
The deep matter, the catchy Arabic and Jewish folk motifs, the hymnic elements in good places and the pure, simplified but also diverse song structures make All Is One the strongest album of the Israeli quintet so far. Instead of unnecessary prolongations, needless over-complications there are mature and powerful solos and melodies here. In my opinion there would be place for some more doom parts because the band is really good in those but fortunately they did not disappear completely.
Along with the new album there is other good news for the European fans: who missed them last time, in 2011 or just want to repeat the experience they can see the band this autumn on tour again!
